Hey everyone! First of all, sorry for the late chapter, I had midterms last week.

So the poll.

It seems people are very split between prioritizing NHAD or Villain Days. I’ll give it another week before I decide. Anyway, this chapter has some cute interactions between Legi and Vio ? I’m glad, since I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve touched this novel that I don’t remember much fluffiness. I’m also going to start re-editing all the chapters when I have the time, because gosh darn… let’s just say I was so tired after translating some of these b.u.g.g.e.rs XD

Chapter 2: Part 4

"Young master, is your condition alright?"

Jil's call snaps Vio back to his senses. He blinks carefully. Despite his original goal of reading in the laboratory, he seems very absent minded as he flips through the pages of a book.

Sunlight streams through the window, faint in its intensity. The day is soon to end.

"I have called out to you several times. In that period, I have witnessed you sighing like no tomorrow."

"Ah, never mind that Jil. I was up all night reading a book yesterday so I am tired." While answering, Vio realizes he let his mouth slip. It earns him a sharp glance from Jill.

"Young master…"

As soon as he hears himself being called, Vio rises to his feet. Although research by itself isn't detrimental, he made a promise one year ago to the man before him not to sacrifice his sleep. In any case, he really doesn't want to be nagged about this.

"O-oh that's right. I will rest in my room until dinner," Vio says.

"By all means, please do not do so."

In order to escape from the butler's piercing gaze, he withdraws from the room in a blink of an eye, leaving behind an afterimage as he dashes through the corridor.

(Hah, how dangerous.)

Even if Jill is kind to him, he doesn't hold back when it comes to Vio's physical condition. He's as strict as a demon. Once the lecture begins, it feels as though it were never ending, and the only way to escape being talked to death would be to run away.

Stifling a yawn, Vio settles for sleeping earlier tonight.

To get to his room on the second floor, he has to proceed to the entrance hall.

Leca is a rural town but this mansion is s.p.a.cious and splendid. Naturally, moving around inside is bothersome.

The mansion was originally built for a weak grandmother, meant for summer use. Because her husband was wealthy as well as the prime minister, the interior decoration and furnis.h.i.+ng are top grade. If there's one thing to be said however, one thing that is a bit off-putting, then it's the trophy of a deer's head mounted in the dining room.

It's a little goose b.u.mp inducing at night.

"Lord Violant."

"Hm?" He whips his head in the direction of the voice. Judging from the tone and pitch, it should be Legion's. But he's nowhere in sight.

"Over here, in the garden," says Legion, waving Vio over.

"What are you doing…?"

He intended to ignore him. Nevertheless, Vio can't help but to ask this question.

Carrying a bouquet of flowers in his arms, colorful in their bloom, Legion flashes a smile from outside the window to the entrance hall.

"You didn't come view the flowers this morning, Lord Violant." Legion approaches the window. "So I asked the gardener for permission to climb the mountain and got these! Will you please accept this bouquet?"

(Why is he like this? It's not like I'm some princess, so why is he giving me flowers?)

As he opens the window, Legion's face breaks into another joyful smile. In Vio’s perspective, he looks like a dog wagging its tail. Though it crosses his mind how rude treating Legion like a dog is, it appears to evoke the opposite effect.

"I didn't employ you to do this."

"Employ?"

Baffled, Legion shakes his head before his eyes pop.

"No, that's not it at all! Even if it's by a little bit I just wish I can calm my heart when I see your smiling face… Ah, n-no. Anyway, that's not what I meant!"

"Calm down. You're speaking too fast."

"What I wanted to say is that it'd make me happy if you accept the flowers," says Legion. From how he acted earlier, it's clear he is being honest. And because of this Vio feels like a poison has been extracted from his body.

(So he was actually this type of person. A guy who can sense the mood.)

He recalls the demeanor of the knights under his brother Rupheus' command, their cold eyes and unfeeling expressions. For someone to charge towards him bursting with pure good will, this is Vio’s first experience.

"I see. It can't be helped. Because the flowers are not at fault I will accept them. But only half. I cannot carry so much."

"It's too great of an honor!"

Once Legion divides the bouquet in half and presents it to him, the fact that he could even hold that much in his arms sends a wave of amazement cras.h.i.+ng into Vio.

Upon closer inspection, there are some he does not recognize.

"Are these flowers from the mountains?"

"Yep! The mountain is beautiful during springtime. I've heard about your illness, Lord Violant. Now that the sunlight isn't as strong, how about it? Why don't you try taking a stroll in the garden? If you don't mind, shall we go?"

After rubbing his left palm a few times on his coat, Legion extends it towards Vio.

Taking in the outstretched hand, his resolve hardens.

Apparently, Legion is under the impression that his body is weak. Well, Vio did tell him he seldom left the mansion.

"No, actually I…"

"Shall we bring a parasol?"

"You're mistaken… but alright."

He sucks in a deep breath.

It's a good opportunity for exercising outside. Vio timidly places his hand on Legion's and Legion gives it a light squeeze.

It's been a while since he last stepped foot on the soil, and as soon as Vio does, a memory flashes through his mind:

"Lord Violant, the snow has piled up so beautifully. Would you like to go out? I shall accompany you."

(That's right. On that winter day, Erik also extended his hand to me.)

All of a sudden, he's back to the present, flying through the air with Legion. That same Legion with a surprised expression. The colorful flowers in his grasp dance in mid flight.

Then Vio falls to his knees. The flowers scatter over the ground.

And he gasps for air. He could hear his heart thras.h.i.+ng against his chest, could feel the unpleasant sweat hanging from his back.

"Lord Violant?!" That Legion is startled is clear, his voice trembling as he speaks.

To show that he's alright, Violant raises his right hand. Despite this, he still struggles to breathe, wobbling in place.

"Young master!"

The moment the voice sounds, Vio's body is pulled back into the entrance hall by Jil. He pats his master's back in regular intervals, showing him the right rhythm to breathe.

"Please inhale. Now, exhale… It is alright. It's okay."

Somehow, Vio manages to match his breathing with the rhythm of Jil's words. With his first concern dealt with, the old butler turns to Legion, eyes narrowed.

"Mr. Legion, what is the meaning of this?"

"…Hah. It's okay Jil," says Vio, voice soft. "It was my fault."

“Eh?”

“It was my intention to go out into the garden. Perhaps I was getting ahead of myself. This is worst."

He covers his face loosely with his hands. His eyes burn, tears flowing down his cheeks. "How can I escape from his shadow? I want to forget but I can't."

"It is alright, young master. You were so courageous just then, absolutely wonderful. So please, do not think of it anymore."

With Jil's gentle voice and light pats on his back, Vio's shaking finally subsides.

(Indeed, that was all in the past. It's alright now.)

Once convinced of this, darkness envelopes his sight.

"Young master?!"

"Lord Violant?!"

Jil and Legion's panicked voices overlap, heard from far away.

Ending notes:

So cute! I love the part when Vio is all “the flowers didn’t do anything wrong so just gimme them” XD. Also, we get another flashback to that crummy knight.
