Han Changsheng spent the morning with An Yuan then hurried to Peach Valley after lunch. This was his fourth day of practice with Elder Lan Fang. There were still six days until the mysterious old man died, and An Yuan had become closer and closer to him recently. The Dog Lord's foot injury had recovered well, and he could stand now. It was still difficult to move around, but there was no time to wait for him to heal. The Dog Lord was trusting in him, and he planned to implement his plan starting tomorrow.
In Yuehua Sect, committing murder, visiting prost.i.tutes, gambling, looting, and etc. were all serious crimes and punished by exile. It was too difficult to get the Dog Lord to murder or rob someone, so he had to confuse things and make him think he did it well enough to recognize the situation. He intended to take the Dog Lord down the mountain tomorrow, trick him into getting drunk, send him off to a brothel, then arrange a catch-them-in-the-act play. In this way, the person and the stolen goods and money would be caught in one fell sweep, and the rest of his destiny could carry out as planned.
Thinking of his nearing freedom, Han Changsheng was so happy he didn't notice he was already at the Peach Blossom Valley.
"What are you thinking about?" Elder Lan Fang suddenly said into his ear.
Han Changsheng quickly smiled and shook his head, "I… the sun is good today. I'm in a good mood!"
Elder Lan Fang smiled. "Start practicing!"
Han Changsheng went to the side and practiced the sword as he had the past few days. So long as Elder Lan Fang didn't watch him closely, he would fool around a little. When Elder Lan Fang watched, he would swing his sword diligently.
Suddenly, Elder Lan Fang stood up, "Child, come over here. Let me see if you've made any progress these days."
Han Changsheng slowly ground to a halt in front of Lan Fang. He was about to carry out his plan, so long as he fooled Elder Lan Fang today, he wouldn't have to come in tomorrow.
Elder Lan Fang watched him with narrowed eyes, noticing the triumphant look on his face. He didn't make a sound, just smiled, and suddenly stabbed toward Han Changsheng with the branch in his hand.
Han Changsheng wasn't ready yet but responded quickly and blocked it.
Today, Elder Lan Fang's moves were fast and fierce, not instructive as they were the previous days. After a few tricks, Han Changsheng was coated in a thin layer of sweat, and his heart filled with doubts. Fortunately, he was more familiar with the Yuehua Sect's style now, so it took less time to think before he moved. His urgency didn't show as much.
"Elder, you're…" Elder Lan Fang swung toward Han Changsheng's calf. He jumped back, wanting to stop.
However, Elder Lan Fang didn't allow him to rest, applying even more pressure. This annoyed Han Changsheng, and he finally grew serious and began fighting back. He swung his sword in a feint, trying to fool Lan Fang, then changed his move. Since it was a fake, he added various fancy gestures, but before he could finish, Lan Fang's branch struck his wrist, and the branches fell to the ground.
"You're exterior is handsome, but you're hollow inside!" Elder Lan Fang yelled.
Han Changsheng didn't the chance to speak as Lan Fang continued to pursue him. This time, he couldn't hide and could only stand still in hopes that Lan Fang would stop.
Unexpectedly, he felt a dull pain on the back of his neck, and he lost consciousness.
When Han Changsheng woke up again, he found himself in a strange place. His neck still hurt, so he rubbed it as he surveyed his surroundings. The lighting here was dim. The only light came from far above. Looking up, he realized there was a hole up there. A small hole high above by several feet, and it was sunlight that came in from up there. He estimated the distance, and it was too far, and the entry point too small.
This underground area was wide, and he was in its center. There were strange plants, damp, green-black vines intertwining all around like a forest, layered even. It created a barrier, blocking his view of the walls. He tried to find another outlet but other than vines, there were only more vines.
Han Changsheng was so angry that he shouted up at the hole, "Hey! Is anybody there! What is this d.a.m.n place?!"
Elder Lan Fang said from beyond the hole, "That's the bottom of Peach Blossom Valley."
Han Changsheng jerked. There was such a place under the Valley?
He said quickly, "Elder, pull me up!"
Lan Fang: "There's an exit connected to the upper ground. Look for it yourself."
This dumbfounded Han Changsheng. There were vines everywhere. Even if there were exits, the vines covered them. Where could he find the entrance?
Han Changsheng asked, "Is the exit behind the vines?"
"Correct."
Han Changsheng was caught in the hysterical point between wanting to cry and wanting to laugh. This old man was trying to come up with ways to train him? Have him cut the vines? Here, if he asked for help, the old man wouldn't. He could only pretend to look for a while to satisfy the old man.
Han Changsheng saw there was a real sword by his feet, Elder Lan Fang probably dropped it with him. He picked it up and noticed the scabbard was made of black iron. An exquisite dragon was engraved on it. There were also groves sculptured into the hilt that fit his hand perfectly. He pulled the sword out of its sheath was stunned by the glint of the sword's blade.
This was an unusually sharp black iron sword. By the sheen of the blade alone, he could tell it was a rare sword. And the old man lent this to him.
He tried to cut down the weird vines and was taken aback.
Although the vines seemed thin, they were tough. He swung the sword, and the vines bounced his blow back, unharmed. He cut again, finding the right angle and strength, and cut off a few of them. He probably wouldn't have managed to cut them with an ordinary sword.
Han Changsheng didn't care much. This was nothing more than the old man tossing him about to play. He cut along with the man's intent for a while, then once time was up, the old man would take him out.
He chopped for a while, bored, but didn't bother with many vines. From the light pa.s.sing through the hole above, it was growing late.
"Elder!" he cried, "Isn't it about time to be done for today? I have to go deliver s.h.i.+di's dinner. How about we continue tomorrow?"
Elder Lan Fang said, "You don't have to worry about your s.h.i.+di. There's someone else to take care of him. I said you can only come out if you find the exit yourself."
Han Changsheng's eyes widened. No way, was this old man playing for real?
"Elder?"
"Elder Lan Fang?"
He called a few more times but didn't get a response.
He said, anxious, "Well, why don't you tell me where's the exit? How far is it from me? It's all vines down here. How much do I need to cut to get out?"
Lan Fang replied, "Everything is a matter of chance. I won't disclose that. For however long it takes, it depends on you. I fell into this place for the first time fifty years ago, and it took twenty days to leave."
Han Changsheng's jaw nearly dislocated. Twenty days?! You joking with your grandma?!
"Elder, no way! I have something urgent tomorrow! Let me go first. I'll come back the next day. You can trap me for a month then."
"Let me out! I have something important!"
"Elder, master, I beg! This is related to my family's life!"
"Motherf.u.c.ker! You smelly old man, haven't you heard Laozi talking!"
No matter how he roared, Elder Lan Fang did not reply again. He was left alone.
Han Changsheng was furious and anxious, wanting to climb up with light footwork. But, as expected, he made it halfway and fell. He tried again, using the vines, but the vines were wet, heavy, and slippery. Even if he used his full strength, he couldn't throw it high enough.
Han Changsheng was frustrated. He knocked on the ground under his feet. "Black and White Impermanence? Judge? Dog stinking Lord, come quickly, something terrible's happened! Your Dog Lord will have an accident!"
Still no response.
Han Changsheng called all day but with nothing to show for it. He banged on the ground, but with no way out, he could only continue to cut the vines. However, the vines were difficult to cut. He managed to cut enough for where five people could stand. If he knew the distance and direction, he could estimate the time, but now he knew nothing. He could only cut mindlessly. If he wanted to cut all the vines in here, don't even mention a few days, it would take months and maybe even years. Don't even mention trying to get out before the mysterious man's death.
Han Changsheng sat on the ground flat on his b.u.t.tocks and wanted to cry but had no tears.
"Dog Lord, you've done me a terrible disservice."
He shouted at the cave again, "Smelly old man! You!"
He paused, cried, then said, "Why don't you throw down some clean underwear?"
