Chapter 8 – Wicked (5)
… … …
She hadn't aged a day, just like the last time he saw her. As he established before, her smell and mana remained unchanged, but something was different. He couldn't really tell while she was unconscious, but now, he thinks he's got her all figured out.
The evidence were there, laid out perfectly in front of him. Ribbon wasn't weak minded, nor weak hearted. She's seen ma.s.sacres before, some worse than the one a while ago. She was also hard to read. She never allowed anyone to know her own thoughts. She was an enigma.
A mystery, even to him..
Physically, she was the same.
But she wasn't Ribbon. Or at least, the Ribbon he knew.
She couldn't even recognize how dangerous she was, or the amount of power she held in her own fingertips. After all, the pagans wanted her dead.
"Are you just pulling my leg? Or did you actually lose your memory?"
Yoona seemed confused at his question. What should she say; the truth? She could hardly believe it herself, much less him.
"Uh, yeah, I think I did lose my memory." She answered, "I don't recognize you, or this place." she figured playing the amnesiac card would be greatly beneficial for her. He pursed his lips at her answer, and let out a sigh.
"I guess no matter how much I ask you, you can never answer any of them."
"Yeah," she piped up, squeaking a bit, before she cleared her throat, "An unfortunate thing I know nothing about anything. Like really… nothing's in my head." She regretted saying it as soon as the words escaped her lips.
Gah, that sounded so wrong.
"Not, nothing as in like literally nothing, but some figure of -" she huffed, "You get what I mean." She grumbled, not wanting to make a bigger fool out of herself. She could already feel her cheeks flush in embarra.s.sment. He nodded at her explanation.
"Understood." He seemed amused at her cluelessness, but she was oblivious to it. He could sense her emotions, or at least, a general feel of it. Almost like a sixth sense. Nothing would escape his eyes, not even the smallest movements remained unnoticed.
However, there was always one persistent thing Yoona had been curious about ever since she saw him. How was he related to Ribbon? What's their connection, deal or relations.h.i.+p?
"So…" she began to speak once again, "Who are you?" she finally asked, her feet shuffling in place, trying to ease the awkwardness in the room. Wicked only turned away from her, seemingly deep in thought. "I think you know me pretty well back then." She looked away from him, "Possibly even intimately." She mumbled to herself, but he heard it clearly.
At the remark, he couldn't help but feel a little affronted by the a.s.sumption.
"Our relations.h.i.+p was strictly professional." He answered her, nipping whatever fantasies she concocted before it even bloomed, "Specifically, I am your guardian."
"Guardian?" she asked
"Yes."
"Like a protector?"
Suddenly her dream flashes across her memories. How Ribbon was sought out relentlessly by a murderous mob. How Ribbon remained unfazed by it. Now that she, Yoona, bore Ribbon's body due to mysterious reasons.
Things were getting more and more complicated by the second. She needed to sit down. Just thinking about the numerous people holding a grudge against her, made Yoona want to kill herself out of self-preservation. They'd kill her the first moment they could. She shouldn't trust anyone.
Wicked watched as she turned pale, and shook in terror. He could see in her eyes she was contemplating whether or not he could be trusted. For all she knew he was only pretending to be a friend, only to end up stabbing her in the back as soon as her back was turned!
No, she couldn't trust him. She stood up suddenly.
"What are you doing?"
"I can't just sit here and believe in whatever you tell me! I don't trust you!"
Looking at her all confused and nervous and scared was a delight to Wicked.
"And I'm supposed to care because?" she huffed and turned away from him, her hands fisted at her sides. She didn't appreciate the taunting. And Wicked was having fun testing how far he could push her temper. "What are you going to do?" he finally asked.
Biting her lip, she noticed the window in the room. Approaching it, she unlocked the window and opened it wide. Her thoughts were jumbled all together, she wasn't thinking straight. She didn't know what to feel, or how she should feel. She was alone in this world.
Everyone, everyone was an enemy, including even him.
"Jump out of that window and you'll die." He told her, before shrugging, "Of course, it won't be a quick one." She could hear the amus.e.m.e.nt in his voice. He was enjoying this. Gathering her resolve, Yoona took purposeful strides just to see whether he was telling the truth. The sight of it took her breath away…
And not in a good way.
