When we stepped out the battlefield, and Xiao Rang put back his spear, we knew what was happening behind us even without looking back. More deafening roar mixed with the hysterical horse neigh and the collision of steel weapons arose from behind. The sound caused by blood bursting out of bodies arose from the left side. Souls who were sorrowfully screaming circled around above the battlefield and refused to leave. They could do nothing but pick up the swords made by themselves to cut their throats. However, they ended up standing up alive again. As they floated in the midair, they sadly watched their companions. Many had fought on the ground, and the same number of souls haunted in the air and were unwilling to leave. How sorrowful those souls were!
The mortals couldn't see them, for they were unable to see the scene after they died, but the divine spirits could see that, vice versa.
At dusk, we arrived at a village fraught with signs of human habitation. We had encountered many civilians on our way who were busy with escaping from the battlefield. Thus, it took us a long time to reach the village.
However, the whole village was like in sleep with no smoke coming out of chimneys or candles lit up.
It seemed like that it didn't know there was a living h.e.l.l 5,000 meters away from here.
I said while kept walking, "Let's find a place to take a rest."
Xiao Rang asked, "Your Highness, what for did you come to the mortal world?"
"To forget."
"To forget what?"
"To forget power."
"Your Highness, you won't forget it forever."
"I want to try at least."
An old man opened his door for us. He at least looked like very old, even older than all elders in the Imperial City of Snowland.
"Are you...Come on in." He nodded his head while looking at us and pushed the door open for us to come inside.
Xiao Rang nodded to him while unprecedentedly standing before me and walked inside.
The old man searched in the darkness for a moment. We kept silent even if we could still see everything in the complete darkness.
A candle was lit up, and then we saw the old man was blind.
"You're divine spirits, aren't you?"
"How do you know?" I asked.
"Haha, I heard two divine spirits appeared on the battlefield with unimaginable wizardry. I think the divine spirits perhaps are you. "
"Since there is a war breaking out near you, why do you still stay here?" asked Xiao Rang this time.
"I'm old, so it's no use escaping. I've known you'll come to me, so I've arranged two rooms for you," said the old man after extinguis.h.i.+ng the match in his hands.
"How did you know we would come to you?" Xiao Rang stood up and held the knight's spear tightly.
"Relax, young man. Look, how can a blind old man like me hurt you? I'm probably the only one who still lives near the battlefield, so you don't need to worry about this."
I signaled Xiao Rang to sit down by giving him a glance.
"Your eyes?"
"Haha, I'm very very old, and I even partic.i.p.ated in the war between the mortals and the divine spirits. Luckily, I ended up alive with my eyes blinded." After a pause, the old man continued, "by ice. However, that's the same reason I can survive so long. The ice inside my body makes my blood flow much slower than the other people."
I stood up and walked over to him.
Around his eyes was the solidified ice. Although he didn't die of old age, he would be cold to death eventually by his brain frozen by the ice.
"Looking at me."
"Yes, Your Highness."
"You knew me?"
"Your Highness, I've been waiting for you for a very very long time."
"Waiting for me?" Speaking of which, I found out that both Xiao Rang and the candle were motionless. Xiao's stars-like eyes looked forward without vitality, and the candle flame didn't beat anymore but continued to light and heat.
"Who are you?"
"Your Highness, it doesn't matter who I am."
"Why have you waited for me? What for?"
"Your Highness, I've waited for myself not you."
"Waited for yourself..."
"Your Highness, you can watch the next scene," said Shadow inside my body in an indifferent voice without emotion and excitement.
The scales of the huge dragon were full of blood, and the Ice Phoenix's huge wings had been broken in half. Both the King of the mortals and I flew backward. He hit the ground where his army stood, and then the ground started cracking with the spot he hit as the center. I fell on a huge ice curtain conjured up by my Ice Wizards and couldn't help coughing blood on it.
Dead silence reigned the whole battlefield. The mortals stopped shooting arrows and thrusting spears. If their King were dead, they would lose the battle. However, my divine spirits exclaimed in unison, for such injury wasn't a big deal regarding the strong self-healing ability of the divine spirits. What surprised them most was that I was pushed so far after I resisted the strike of the King of the mortals.
Bang! Bang! Bang! At another side, many elves of the Elf Clan were killed. The mortals smashed the formation set up by the clan. Just now, almost those present watched the fight between me and the King of the mortals, so no one noticed that the King of the mortals had dispatched a batch of his soldiers to destroy the formation of the Elf Clan. But, it was still not late to save them.
I didn't know why I was told strongly to stand up by something in my mind. In the trance, I caught sight of that face among the elves.
I struggled to get my feet on, but Xi Guang held me and said, "Your Majesty, please don't get up. No loss will be caused if the Elf Clan is extinct."
Then, he turned around and said to a White Ice Wizard, "Heal our King."
My sight pa.s.sed the crowd and landed on the most beautiful lady of the Elf Clan. She also looked at me at the same time. Countless elves were killed by the mortals, but more rushed into protecting her. Unfortunately, there were even more mortals coming to her with a greedy look.
She sorrowfully stared at me.
"Get out." I waved my hand to interrupt the White Ice Wizard and then flew toward the encampment of the Elf Clan with snow under my feet. The elders like Xi Guang shouted behind me, but I knew I had to go there.
The thunderous roar of the dragon arose behind me. Before I realized what was that, I felt the pain on my back as if I was crushed into water. I didn't need to look back, for I knew it was the King of the mortals who hurt me.
"Don't even think about to touch her. She's mine."
"Get out of my way."
Boom! A huge bird came from my hands and hit the King of the mortals.
Like a kite with a broken string, he flew out. Almost at the same time, the dragon flew downwards and carried the unconscious him on its back again. I flew over and grabbed that lady.
"Let's go."
"Okay, Your Majesty. I've waited for you a long time."
"Let's go."
Bang! The entire dragon hit the ground like a cannonball.
"Your Majesty!" I heard my people call my name in the distance.
Subsequently, a pair of hands appeared before me and wanted to take the lady away from me.
"Get out!"
Huge ice hurtled at the owner of the hands and hit his eyes. I only saw darkness the next second before I recognized his face.
One second ago, I was at the dangerous and boisterous battlefield, but now, I returned the quite room again. I still stood in front of the old man. The candle flame slightly beat. Xiao's eyes became as bright as stars again. It was so quiet that even a tiny noise could be heard.
The old man looked at me with a smile.
"You're..."
"Your Highness, that's not the end of you, but a start. As long as you continue your journey, you'll know what you want to know naturally. You'll be the King eventually. You can be nothing but the King."
The old man got down on one knee and said, "Your Highness and General, please go inside and have a rest." He pointed at the inside room with one hand.
I took a deep breath and said, "Eh, let's go, Xiao Rang."
"Yes, Your Highness."
"Your Highness, what are you going to do? What do you want?"
"Xiao Rang, I don't know. I just want to stay away from the snowland and get a place to hide. I'm sick of seeing the mantling snow and the dazzling wizardry that disgusts me. I just want to leave."
"Your Highness, do you still want to succeed to the throne?"
"but, that's my brother's throne, Xiao Rang."
"No, Your Highness, that's your throne. As long as you want it back, I'll fight for you with my life."
"No, you won't, Xiao Rang. Don't wind up like your father, making me regret for the rest of my life."
"Your Highness, that's not the end of you, but a start. As long as you continue your journey, you'll know what you want to know naturally. You'll be the King eventually. You can be nothing but the King."
I turned around and walked inside. After I made Xiao Rang fall asleep, I sat on the bed alone.
Suddenly, I thought of what Shadow had said to me-"Your Highness, that's not the end of you, but a start. As long as you continue your journey, you'll know what you want to know naturally. You'll be the King eventually. You can be nothing but the King".
I also thought of many other things: Xiao Yan stood in front of me who was little at that time and protected me from the huntdown and wizardry; he held me in his arms but asked Xiao Rang who was more little than me to walk on the snowland by himself. However, he still called Xiao Rang's name before he died; was the feeling when my father handed me over to Xiao Rang similar to that when he gave an indispensable part of his to the others? Was it even more suffering than lose his own life?; Xiao Rang was just a kid when I entered the world of Shadow. But when I got out of it, Xiao Rang grew up into an adult who looked like his father and was more good-looking than me.
I couldn't help asking myself that night what I pursued after experiencing so much. What the h.e.l.l did I look for? Was that old man the one whose eyes were blinded by my father on the battlefield? Then, who on earth was he? Why did all of them call me by "Your Highness" but didn't give me a reason?
I thought we would only stay here till dawn.
