Chapter 2.2 – Rules
Resident no. 233 was one of the first people to settle in this formidable city. As you can tell from his very high number, his contemporaries or colleagues are now big boss figures, and he alone was still playing the role of someone else's little brother and sometimes, a subordinate! Bet, he couldn't even count in his fingers how many times he became a boss villain's younger brother. Poor 233 watched new and younger villains surpa.s.s his mark helplessly throughout the years.
The reason for this was entirely because he was a little different, little odd. When he plays a role, he often likes to improvise, but fortunately, he was only a.s.signed to small insignificant roles so his habit had not yet cause big troubles. Yet, this led to his score below the pa.s.sing line for a long time that his friends became afraid that there was no room for improvement, that he was a hopeless case.
The long-term small role made his pay pitifully low. Once, he almost had to beg for a living in the city! Later, after being enlightened by his friends, he gradually learned and took care of himself. He played his role honestly according to the script, and his income gradually increased.
As soon as he stopped spicing up the characters given to him, he was slowly given roles of greater significance. True to this, in his latest character, he played the role of the trusted crow man of the demon king. Being the crow man promised a sufficient weight upon task accomplishment. He even had the chance to combat with the protagonist directly! He was indeed happy. It was his first after all. If this continues, he might actually live a decent life.
Returning to City of Sin, 233 habitually stopped at the bar and asked for a gla.s.s of beer. While drinking, he gently touched his wrist and immediately a bright miniature screen was projected in front of his eyes. He clicked on the scroll-style task book and the newly released task content was displayed.
He had a watch on his wrist, the medal everyone has. It contained his ident.i.ty, certificate, city pa.s.s and records that entailed his information and property in the city. It was not only a watch but an important tool where the system releases mission information directly. Very handy, that was what it was.
At the same time, medals are also the only tools that can be brought into the parallel world. City of sin also relies on this to connect with the characters. Because different parallel worlds have different world views, the styles of medals can be changed at will in order to conform to the world view, such as watches, rings, gla.s.ses, etc. In the City of Sin, the styles of medals can be completely set according to the characters' own preferences.
Here, 233's medal was in the form of a wrist watch.
At this point, his new task in a different world was already displayed afront him, his eyes only roughly swept through, and immediately spurted out the beer he had just drunk out his mouth. He couldn't believe what he saw.
“Oh, has anything good happened to you lately?”
A voice came from behind and a heavy hand landed on 233's shoulders. A fat man sat down next to him with a grin on his beady face.
Number 66845, often referred to as Xiao Liu which was the name of the character he played longest, beamed at 233. As one might not expect, he was 233's dear friend despite his obscene reputation. 66845 was often known as the wretched fat man who generally plays the roles of villains which lacks any sort of decency and morality. He also asked for a gla.s.s of wine and poured it down his throat with a big gulp.
“Why did you come back so soon?” 233 rubbed wine stains from the corners of his mouth with the back of his hand. Some were surprised to see the fat man. The fat man's talent is good and he has been promoted very fast. Now he is playing the role of a big boss. Generally speaking, the more important the person is, the longer he stays in the parallel world, unlike the crow man who 233 just played.
“Bad luck has been chasing me lately. The author has put the novel away, and all the actors in that novel have been put back.” The fat man slapped the bottom of his gla.s.s heavily on the table, making a huge crackle, expressing his dissatisfaction. "No pay! Just because I was stabbed by the scheming eunuch. Screw it! It seemed like I worked hard for nothing!"
“Can you imagine? I have not earned a single point. Bah, all eunuchs must die!” he continued venting out his frustration while 233 laughed at the swearing fat man who had just asked for a second gla.s.s of beer.
“By the way, what did you see just now, making you happy like that?” Fat man inquired after seeing 233 failed to spat out his drink due to his sudden excitement. 233 displayed the screen by his wrist.w.a.tch and showed fat man his recent and upcoming conquests.
“Aha! You have finally been promoted, and the always younger brother has finally been promoted to be the boss in ten thousand years! Congratulations pal! ” Fat man smiled from ear to ear and patted 233 on the shoulder, genuinely happy for 233's achievement.
“What boss? I will only be a small boss!” 233 shook his head, plead fat man to lower down his voice. He looked around, it seemed like people didn't hear a thing as the deafening music drowned his friend's uproar..
