The road up the mountain was a dirt road with a history of untold years. Perhaps because few people used it, the road was almost covered with weeds.
Ning Tao carried the Soil-seeking Inkstone and climbed up the mountainside along the rugged path. Soon the path disappeared, and in front of it lay strange stones, like a stone forest. A dense primeval forest followed, rising up the steep mountain. Ning Tao looked up and found that the mountain was still covered with clouds and fog, causing the summit invisible.
The Soil-seeking Inkstone still indicated the direction of the top of the mountain.
Ning Tao really wanted to climb to the top, but after a moment's thought, he gave up. It might take him about a day to climb up, but he promised Lu Nan that he would have lunch with them. Now it was almost time to lunch.
"Leave a blood lock here, and I'll come back in the evening. It would save a lot of time to go straight up from here," Ning Tao said to himself, making a decision. He glanced around, and then stepped into those strange stones.
Some of these stones were more than 10 meters high, like a building, some lying like a wall, some like animals. All in all, they were in all sorts of shapes. No one knew how they came to be, or whether they had been on the slope for tens of thousands of years or more.
Humans tended to think of themselves as masters of the earth, but they didn't even know their own origins, let alone the extraordinary changes that had taken place over the planet's billions of years and the extinction of species.
Ning Tao stopped in front of a prostrate boulder, then bit his right index finger and drew a blood lock on the boulder. With this blood lock, he could come here from anywhere on earth in seconds, and explore its secrets.
As he walked back, Ning Tao's eye dropped on a stone.
It was a square stone that looked like a stone tablet.
Curious, Ning Tao went over. At first sight he thought it was a stone tablet, carved and placed there by someone. However, after careful observation, he found that it was a natural stone like a stone tablet, because it had no traces of artificial carving.
There was no inscription on the "stone tablet", but there were some strange lines that curved and crisscrossed like rivers on the earth. The surface of the stone was dotted with blurred patches of varying sizes.
Ning Tao pushed it, but the stone didn't budge. He took two steps back, put spiritual power in one of his legs, and kicked the stone with his foot.
The stone still did not move.
Ning Tao was amazed. His spiritual power was not very powerful, but if he could not shake a stone the size of a stone tablet with spiritual power filled in his leg, it was not his leg but the stone had something strange.
"This place isn't normal." Ning Tao walked around the stone twice, but couldn't find anything wrong.
Both the existence of the spiritual soil and the stone were evidence that Xuan Tianzi actually stayed in the Sword Pavilion Mountain.
Now that he had drawn a blood lock here, Ning Tao wasn't in a hurry. He got off the mountain and went back to Lu Nan's house.
Lu Nan and her aunt had already cooked lunch, including stir-fried bamboo shoots, green vegetables and egg soup, as well as a dish of cold houttuynia cordata in sauce and double-cooked pork with Chinese wolfberry sprout. Both houttuynia cordata and Chinese wolfberry sprout were wild vegetables from the mountains, and especially the latter was a kind of Chinese medicine, so Ning Tao knew it.
Lu Nan lifted Yang Lu, who was in a daze on the threshold, to his feet, carefully helped him to the dining table before she served him with porridge and eggs in his bowl.
Suffering was the true touchstone between poor couples.
Lu Nan's aunt said, "Doctor Ning, Mr. Yang is a good man. He graduated from college and came here to teach. When we were busy with farming, he helped us in fields. Please cure him."
"I'll do my best," replied Ning Tao.
Since he told Yang Lu the truth, the decision was not in his hands, but in Yang Lu's.
Lu Nan filled a bowl of rice for Ning Tao and said in an embarra.s.sed way, "Doctor Ning, we don't have much good food for you. Please don't mind, just make do with it."
Ning Tao smiled and said, "You're welcome, chief Lu. This meal is all mountain food. I seldom have it. It's good."
A smile also appeared on Lu Nan's lips. "Let's stop talking and dine."
Ning Tao watched Lu Nan out of the corner of his eye while eating. Lu Nan was simple, beautiful and had a gentle and kind heart. He couldn't help but wonder how such a woman could be Yang Lu's lover and kill him in their previous lives.
If the present life and the previous life separated by a wall, the wall must be as high as the sky and as thick as the earth.
After lunch, Yang Lu said he wanted to go for a walk. Lu Nan helped him out the door. Ning Tao walked slowly down the flagging, following the couple. Along the way, many villagers greeted Yang Lu and asked about his condition.
Before they knew it, they were at the village school again. As it was not time for cla.s.s, the school was quiet.
"My husband is the only teacher in this school. Since he was ill, I took his place in the cla.s.s. Doctor Ning, please make sure to cure my husband. The children need him, and I can't live without him," Lu Nan earnestly begged. The words brought tears to her eyes.
Ning Tao nodded and felt poignant. He didn't know why she killed Yang Lu in her previous life, nor could he know, but she was such a kind and wonderful woman in this life. Was Yang Lu really willing to hurt her for the sake of the next life?
"I want to come into the cla.s.sroom," said Yang Lu.
"I'll help you in. You walk carefully." Lu Nan carefully supported Yang Lu with her hand.
Ning Tao followed them into the cla.s.sroom. The cla.s.sroom was rudimentary, with red paint slogans on the wall opposite the blackboard saying "all reactionaries are paper tigers," but they had become tattered by decades of erosion. It was not hard to see that this was once a meeting room or something like that in this village before it was turned into a cla.s.sroom.
Yang Lu reached out and touched the blackboard. A smile came to his lips. "I like the feel of my fingers on the blackboard. I seem to hear the children reading."
"I hope you feel better soon and come back to teach the kids," Lu Nan stated.
"Will I get better?" Yang Lu asked back.
Tears flew from Lu Nan's eyes. She turned her head away because she didn't want Yang Lu to see her tears.
"It's hard on you." Yang Lu reached out and held Lu Nan in his arms.
"Woo-woo..." Lu Nan put her head on Yang Lu's shoulder and cried. "I don't want to live if anything happens to you. I'll leave this world with you. I did not take good care of you this life, then I will marry you next life, be your wife, take good care of you, and have our children..."
Ning Tao also teared up a little. He left the cla.s.sroom, because he didn't want to spoil the moving scene. How many couples were truly attached to each other these days? Many marriages were little more than deals and compromises. How many true loves like Lu Nan and Yang Lu were left in the world?
Ning Tao looked up at the foggy Sword Pavilion Mountain from the yard, but instead of thinking about Xuan Tianzi or spiritual soil, he was thinking about a decision he had made. "I don't have to tell Yang Lu the truth. I can just cure him. That way, Yang Lu wouldn't have gotten into this mess, and Lu Nan won't get hurt... Was I wrong?"
After a while, Lu Nan helped Yang Lu out of the cla.s.sroom. Although she stopped crying, there were still tears in the corner of her eyes.
"Doctor Ning, I've made up my mind. I'll accept your operation." Yang Lu finally made his decision.
Ning Tao nodded, not surprised by his decision.
"Doctor Ning, do you think... my husband will probably forget me after the operation?" Lu Nan looked at Ning Tao with tears in her eyes. Her worries and pains were all written on her face.
Ning Tao replied, "Yes, so... think it through."
Lu Nan said, "I don't have to think. My husband is near to death. The most important thing now, of course, is to cure him. It doesn't matter if he doesn't remember me when he's well, because I can tell him about us. I'll make him remember me again. I am his wife, I am, I will be, and if there is another life, I will still be his wife."
"Will I really lose my memory?" Yang Lu looked worried.
Ning Tao thought about it for a moment and answered, "It's just possible, I'm not sure. You know what? We go home, you tell me your story, and I record it for you. If you forget your wife after the operation, you can watch video."
"Well, that's a good idea. Let's go home." Yang Lu smiled.
When night fell, the Sword Pavilion Village lit up spa.r.s.ely.
In this poor and humble home, Ning Tao recorded warm and touching scenes with his mobile phone.
Yang Lu sat on the bed with his skinny feet in a plastic foot basin. Lu Nan crouched down to wash his feet in a gentle and careful way.
After was.h.i.+ng his feet, Lu Nan helped Yang Lu lie down. Then she, too, took off her shoes and climbed into bed, into Yang Lu's arms. The couple held each other tightly, and looked at each other like an integral whole.
"Honey, whether you will remember me or not, I am your wife. I love you," Lu Nan said affectionately.
Two drops of tears rolled out of the corners of Yang Lu's eyes. "Honey, how would I forget you? I won't forget you even if I forget who I am."
Lu Nan let out a delicate sound and immediately kissed Yang Lu on the mouth.
Ning Tao filmed the scene. Watching Lu Nan and Yang Lu kiss, he didn't feel embarra.s.sed at all, but rather touched.
After a long while, Lu Nan and Yang Lu finally separated.
Ning Tao said, "Well, chief Lu, you should go out now. I'll treat your husband."
Lu Nan got out of bed and put on her shoes.
Ning Tao took out the phone's memory card and gave it to Lu Nan, saying, "Take this."
Lu Nan bowed deeply to Ning Tao and said, "Thank you, Doctor Ning. Please do cure my husband."
Ning Tao nodded and said, "Remember my rules. Don't come in, and don't peek."
Lu Nan left the room and closed the door.
Ning Tao bolted the door, bit his right index finger, drew a blood lock on the wall, and opened the convenient door with the key.
"It's..." Yang Lu was stunned.
Ning Tao reached out and pulled Yang Lu out of bed, saying, "Come with me."
He didn't know if Yang Lu would forget Lu Nan, but he was sure Yang Lu would forget him when he came out of this convenient door again.
