Inside the interrogation room, Song Jun was s.p.a.cing out. He used to be a quick-thinking person, but now he resembled an Alzheimer patient, often getting distracted. In the past three days, the intervals of his headaches had been growing shorter. Each time his headache acted up, he would be in immense torment. One of the worst cases was when he was in so much pain that he became incontinent.
Outside the interrogation room, Wu Wenbo and a few colleagues were watching Song Jun through the window. Chen Zhengyi had arrived as well, bringing him with a neurologist and a nurse.
“President Chen, is it possible to find out what's wrong with him?” Wu Wenbo asked.
Chen Zhengyi said, “No. There was no trace of toxins in his blood stream, but his brain is deteriorating. We are unable to find the root cause, so we are unable to treat him. I'm guessing that he won't be able to live until the opening of the court session.”
Wu Wenbo frowned.
A police officer said, “Inspector Wu, Song Jun had already given us whatever necessary. We've also found the weapon and the initial crime scene, and have also collected plenty of proof of Song Jun's crimes. It will be the same outcome regardless of his appearance in court.”
Wu Wenbo sighed. “Even so…”
It did not feel complete for the criminal to not appear in court after managing to catch him.
“Right, have you identified the owner of the number which was used to make the report?” Wu Wenbo had suddenly recalled.
A police officer said, “Sir, yes we've managed to track it down, but the number belongs to a resident of Beidu. He said that he hasn't been using the number for years, and had almost forgotten about it.”
“It was a man?”
“Yes.”
Wu Wenbo frowned even harder. He clearly remembered that the caller was a woman. Her voice was very pleasant. Yet, the caller identified was a man. There were many suspicious points of this case, like this number and Song Jun's mysterious headaches which root cause was unidentifiable.
At this point, a police officer walked over. “Inspector Wu, Zhou Ying's mother is here. She requested permission to meet Song Jun. Would you like me to bring her here or invite her to leave?”
Wu Wenbo contemplated for a while. “Bring her here. This guy won't be able to live until the court session. It would be the least which could be done to let the victim's family meet him.”
A few minutes later, Zhou Ying's mother was being held by a female officer to the outside of the interrogation room. In less than three days' time, her hair had greyed significantly, she had looked much older. She was walking unstably and appeared to be completely worn out.
Wu Wenbo went to support Zhou Ying's mother, and said calmly, “Auntie, the criminal is inside, you may look at him.”
Zhou Ying's mother lifted her head, looking at Song Jun who was seated inside the interrogation room. She had suddenly lost control, violently smas.h.i.+ng the tempered gla.s.s, and yelling, “Sc.u.m! You sc.u.m! Return me my Yingzi…”
Cries came followed after a bout of yelling.
Crying was this kind woman's only weapon.
Wu Wenbo consoled, “Auntie, my condolences. Your daughter wishes the best for you too, you must take care of yourself. The murderer has been apprehended and he will be punished by the law. Your daughter can rest in peace.”
Zhou Ying's mother whimpered, “Why are you not executing him by shooting? Why are you not executing him… Oh, my daughter…”
Wu Wenbo was helpless too against such a situation.
Just at the moment, Song Jun who was seated inside the room had suddenly shrieked. He held onto his head, violently smas.h.i.+ng it into the table. The officer who was in charge of taking interrogation notes had approached him and tried to hold him back, but his shrieks had grown even more intense.
The interrogation room was soundproof. It was not possible for the inside to hear anything from the outside, but people outside could hear the sounds inside through the speakers.
Song Jun's shrieks were transmitted through the speakers. Zhou Ying's mother stopped crying instantly and looked at Song Jun in astonishment.
The neurologist, who Chen Zhengyi had brought here, had run towards the interrogation room with their nurse. Zhou Ying's mother seemed to have sensed something about the situation, and suddenly grabbed the nurse's hand, saying in agitation, “Don't save that b.a.s.t.a.r.d! Don't save him!”
That nurse did not dare to push Zhou Ying's mother away and was simply frozen in spot.
The neurologist could not care anymore; he pushed open the door, rus.h.i.+ng in. He lifted Song Jun's eyelids, checking his pupils.
“Ah—” Song Jun suddenly let out a horrifying scream in pain, violently throwing his head backward. He pushed away the officer who was holding onto his head, then fell to the ground.
He could not stop kicking his legs and rubbing his head against the ground. The skin on his head had been worn off, blood smeared everywhere. He screamed continuously in agony. “Painful, painful… so painful… Aargh!”
The neurologist ran out of the room immediately. “The patient's in a critical condition. We have to summon an ambulance to send him to the hospital for treatment.”
Wu Wenbo nodded.
Chen Zhengyi took out his phone and summoned for an ambulance.
This unexpected situation had sent everyone in a panic, except for Zhou Ying's mother who seemed very peaceful. She stared fixedly at Song Jun who was curled up on the ground, kicking his legs and rubbing his head on the ground. Hints of excitement appeared in her teary eyes, she seemed to be mumbling something, but n.o.body could hear her clearly.
An illness of the heart could only be treated with a cure for the heart. Song Jun's suffering and death were the cure for her heart. If she had not witnessed this scene, the resentment and hatred in her heart would consume her like a virus, she would fall ill and die. The grief of losing her daughter would still be present, but at least she could definitely feel better with this resentment vented.
“I don't want to die… I don't want to die… Save me… So painful… My head… So painful…” Song Jun's pants were wet. A stench of urine had filled the interrogation room. He had urinated in his pants again.
Gradually, Song Jun's cries grew weaker; the extent of his struggle had grown smaller. Before the university hospital's ambulance arrived, he had become completely still.
The neurologist approached Song Jun and felt for his jugular vein, then lifted his eyelids to check his pupils.
Song Jun's pupils were dilating quickly.
The neurologist walked out. “He's dead.”
All the officers present were silent. It was too bizarre.
All of a sudden, Zhou Ying's mother started crying and laughing. “Yingzi, do you see? The sc.u.m who had hurt you is dead. This must be the retribution you've served to him in heaven, right? “It must be, it must be…”
Ten minutes later, a female officer held Zhou Ying's mother out of the police station, about to support her into the car. A lady in blue approached. In her hands, was a bag with the words “Shenzhou Charity Company” printed on.
The lady in blue came before Zhou Ying's mother and promptly stuffed the bag into Zhou Ying's mother's hands.
“Miss, you…” Zhou Ying's mother looked at the lady in blue, astonished.
The lady in blue smiled gently, “Madam, your daughter had purchased charity insurance with us before her death. This is the compensation she should be receiving. You may keep it.”
Zhou Ying's mother opened the bag and glanced into it. It was a bag full of cash. She was stunned momentarily. “This… How have I not heard from Yingzi that she had bought insurance?”
The lady in blue pointed to the sky, and smiled, “Some things should only be left to heaven's knowledge.”
With that, she turned around and left.
Zhou Ying's mother looked up into the sky. It was a bright and clear day, the sun was s.h.i.+ning. She looked at the back view of the lady in blue. Somehow, her sight had drifted away from the lady in blue, to an electric bicycle which was parked by the roadside.
On the bike was a young man who was smiling at her. That smile was genuine and warm like the sun. In that instant, she seemed to have understood something, but also not at all.
The lady in blue got on the electric motorbike, and the man rode away.
Zhou Ying's mother did not even know the names of the lady in blue and that man.
Why are names needed to be left when upholding deeds of justice?
“Brother Ning, I never knew that doing good felt so good,” Qing Zhui said on the G.o.d's Will electric motorbike. She was the lady in blue.
Ning Tao said smilingly, “Then you should do more in the future. It will lessen your sins.”
“Yup!” Qing Zhui hugged onto Ning Tao's waist tightly, her entire body was against his back.
Ning Tao felt like he was seared by two pieces of iron plates. The G.o.d's Will electric motorbike's automatic handbrake had appeared.
After traveling for a short distance, Ning Tao had stopped the bike. A lady in white walked out from a bank. Without a word, she got on the bike.
Once she had gotten on, Bai Jing started rambling. “Shenzhou Charity Company only has a start-up capital of a million. You two went ahead donating 200 thousand to her, do you want the company to close down? You can't do charity like this, alright. There's not a single cent of income, while the output is so generous.”
Qing Zhui said with a smile, “Money is just a worldly possession. We've already spent it anyway. Being happy is the most important.”
Bai Jing slapped the back of Qing Zhui's head. “You're the type who is only suited to stay at home, cooking porridge for your man, was.h.i.+ng laundry and taking care of kids. You can't even compare to an elementary student when it comes to business management.”
Ning Tao forced a smile, saying, “Sister Bai, you're saying that because you want to have the delicate perfumed cream, right? I'll go back and make you some, then you go make some profit with them, alright?”
“That's better,” Bai Jing smiled.
Ning Tao stepped on the motor, the G.o.d's Will electric motorbike entered a driving lane and zoomed ahead.
“Brother Ning, where are we heading now?” Bai Jing asked.
Ning Tao said, “We're going back to Sword Pavilion Village first. You and Senior Yin can stay in the House of Sword Pavilion Cave, Qing Zhui and I can stay in the Suns.h.i.+ne Orphanage for a few days. Su Ya had found more than ten patients with the merit of good intention, I have to finish treating all of them over the next few days. Also, you and Senior Yin can also make preparations, we'll be going to the ruins of the Feminine-moon people tonight.”
“What preparations should I make?” Qing Zhui asked.
Ning Tao said, “You just have to prepare a flashlight.”
Qing Zhui said, “Okay, I'll go buy one.”
Bai Jing b.u.t.ted in abruptly, “Sister, don't you already have one? Why are you buying another?”
Qing Zhui asked in surprise, “When have I ever owned a flashlight? Why was I not aware?”
Bai Jing said, “That flashlight of yours has never been used before. It's probably out of batteries.”
Ning Tao: “…”
