Inside the infirmary, a doctor was examining Song Chengpeng. His skin was of an ash grey hue at the moment; his body was emanating a stench of rotten flesh. He was delirious, and would alternate between wailing and snickering.
It was the Sacred Needle to Nasty Diseases taking effect.
Ning Tao thought that the effect would still need another one to two days to kick in. But seeing Song Chengpeng's situation, he suddenly realized that he had neglected something: Song Chengpeng had long been depleted by a life of debauchery. Even though he was only in his 20s, his immunity was worse than people in their 50s.
“Superintendent Jiang, we can wait no longer. He has to be sent to the hospital.” Worry was written all over Liao Bing's face. “It would be troublesome if someone died here.”
Jiang Hao glanced at Ning Tao, seeking his consent with her gaze.
Ning Tao said, “He should be sent to the hospital given that he's so gravely ill. I wonder what the doctors have to say?”
The doctor who was examining Song Chengpeng turned to look at Ning Tao with a solemn look. “I can't find the cause of his illness. His symptoms point to signs of being poisoned, but I've tested his blood and the results turned out to be normal.”
“Send him to the hospital and let them do a full examination then,” said Jiang Hao.
She clearly knew what Ning Tao was thinking. The effect of the Sacred Needle to Nasty Diseases had taken over Song Chengpeng. It would actually be very easy for Ning Tao to heal him. But Song Chengpeng was a chesspiece in Ning Tao's plan. The more gravely ill he was, the more useful he was. How would Ning Tao possibly save Song Chengpeng?
Liao Bing was desperate to send Song Chengpeng away. As Jiang Hao was speaking, he had already asked two police officers to carry Song Chengpeng out in a stretcher.
Jiang Hao and Ning Tao followed behind. She whispered into Ning Tao's ear, “Will the hospital find out?”
Ning Tao said softly, “Don't worry. If they could, I wouldn't have done this to him in the first place.”
Jiang Hao said, “Then I'm a.s.sured.”
Ning Tao said, “Once we're at the hospital, we won't' get involved at all. Just let the doctors do their job. His condition is incurable anyway. I'm just waiting for Song Beikun. I want to see if he could endure watching his son dying!”
It could be basically confirmed that there was a cultivation background behind the Genesis Biotech Company. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to subdue Yin Molan and lock him in an underground lab. Their presence made the efforts to rescue Yin Molan even more difficult and complicated. That was why Song Chengpeng was an important chesspiece which needed to be played wisely.
Song Chengpeng was sent on an ambulance. Ning Tao and Jiang Hao tagged along.
“I want to get in. You two scram!” Song Chengyi was behind the ambulance, appearing to be furious and was going to push the police who was blocking him.
Ning Tao nudged Jiang Hao with his elbow. “Let him in.”
Jiang Hao said, “Let him.”
Song Chengyi got into the ambulance and stared bitterly at Ning Tao and Jiang Hao. His eyes seemed to have seen through all of the truth, detecting the smell of conspiracy, but could not do anything to Ning Tao and Jiang Hao for it.
The ambulance left the police station and went on the road.
Ning Tao looked out the window and saw a pair of youths who were standing by the roadside. The faces of those boys were frozen in his mind.
They were Wu Xiaolin and Liu Xian'er.
Both Wu Xiaolin and Liu Xian'er were also looking at Ning Tao with a calm look on their faces.
Ning Tao was shocked. For them to appear meant that they were the true cultivation powers behind the Genesis Biotech Company, having something to do with Bai Sheng!
Could the deaths of Liu s.h.i.+ba and Reverend Qingsong have something to do with that cultivation power?
Things were getting more complicated.
Jiang Hao had also seen Wu Xiaolin and Liu Xian'er. She murmured, “Those two youths are very strange.”
Ning Tao didn't say a peep about it. After all, the medical staff and Song Chengyi were also present.
As the ambulance drove away, Wu Xiaolin and Liu Xian'er were also getting further and further from them, then they finally disappeared into the horizon.
Ning Tao looked away and recalled that Yin Molan had once mentioned a masked female pract.i.tioner wearing a bamboo hat. Would she appear this time?
Just then, Song Chengyi picked up a call. After talking for a brief moment, he pa.s.sed the phone to Ning Tao. “Ning, it's for you.”
Ning Tao regained his focus and received the phone from Song Chengyi, bringing it to his ear. “I'm Ning Tao, speak up.”
A man's deep voice came from the phone, as if he was suppressing his anger, “Dr. Ning, we have no bad blood with each other, we don't even know each other. Why are you harming my son?”
Ning Tao said coolly, “Oh, it's Mr. Song. You're being unreasonable by saying that. If you have evidence, then you can call the police on me. I'm sending your son to the hospital on the ambulance right now. Your people better not make a ruckus out of this, or else you'll regret.”
“Let's not beat around the bush and threaten each other anymore. What do you want?”
Ning Tao said, “You know what I want. My friend. As long as you release my friend, your son will be safe and sound.”
“That's not something I can decide on!”
“Then who can?”
Song Beikun fell into silence before saying, “I need to get permission. Give me some time. Regardless of the outcome, I will meet you at the hospital.”
He hung up.
“Okay, I'll wait for you.” Ning Tao returned the phone to Song Chengyi.
The ambulance had arrived at the hospital and Song Chengpeng was rushed to the emergency room. Ning Tao and Jiang Hao were waiting outside. Song Chengyi was pacing to and fro in front of the room anxiously, making and receiving calls every now and then.
Ning Tao was poking on a roll of gauze with a Sacred Needle. He wasn't bored out of his mind, but rather, practicing his Hundred Step Sacred Needles Method. He wasn't poking randomly; he was aiming at specific seams of the gauze. With that method, he was training his hand-eye coordination and sensitivity.
Jiang Hao was watching Ning Tao as he stabbed the gauze. Her gaze was full of curiosity and also affection. She kept on watching as Ning Tao stabbed away. Despite it being something so boring and tedious, she had found it very interesting instead.
As long as two people were in love, anything the other party did would be fascinating. Even if they were only scratching their feet.
An hour pa.s.sed in an instant.
The door to the emergency room was opened. A few members of the medical staff walked out.
“Doctor, how is it?” Song Chengyi approached anxiously.
The doctor took off his mask and shook his head. “I'm sorry, we've tried our best. Please prepare for his funeral.”
“Ah?” Song Chengyi was instantly frozen in shock.
The doctor said, “I've never seen such a situation in my entire life. The patient appears to be poisoned but his blood tests came back normal. We've done a full-body scan of his internal organs and everything is normal. Still, his bodily functions are rapidly failing. We can't identify a cause so we can't treat him accordingly. He still has some time left, you may go see him for one last time.”
Song Chengyi rushed into the emergency room.
Ning Tao kept the Sacred Needle and gauze, entering the emergency room with Jiang Hao.
Song Chengpeng was lying on the operation table. His face was dull and grey; his entire body had the stench of a rotting corpse. His eyes were shut. He was on the verge of death.
“Brother, open your eyes and look at me. Tell me who has harmed you, brother will avenge you!” Song Chengyi exclaimed as he stared at Ning Tao. It was a stare filled with hate.
Ning Tao was completely indifferent. Song Chengyi was a mere n.o.body in his eyes and could barely be a threat to him.
Song Chengpeng opened his eyes, his voice trembling, “Save me… the devils are grabbing my legs… They want to pull me down… I'm so cold… Save me…”
Song Chengyi grabbed Song Chengpeng's hand. Before he could say any words of comfort, something seemed to have occurred to him and he released his hand, as if afraid of being infected.
Footsteps were heard outside; a group of people walked in.
The man leading the group was in his 50s. He was tall and lean, his gaze was sharp, and he possessed a strong, commanding aura. He was a true martial artist with great internal strength.
Without his introduction, Ning Tao had already guessed who he was. He was the real owner of the Genesis Biotech Company, Song Beikun.
Behind Song Beikun were four bodyguards who were also strong martial artists. Wu Xiaolin and Liu Xian'er were also present, standing behind the crowd, looking at Ning Tao and appearing to be very calm.
The atmosphere inside the emergency room had become tense all of sudden, as if it would explode at any moment.
“Chengyi, you may excuse yourself.” It was the first thing Song Beikun said.
Song Chengyi trembled slightly, then nodded before leaving the emergency room.
Wu Xiaolin closed the door.
Song Beikun approached the operating table. Looking at the dying Song Chengpeng, tears welled in his eyes. He was born in the 1960s; his era coincided with the birth policy, so he only had one son, Song Chengpeng. As he watched Song Chengpeng on his last moments on the operation table, how could he possibly not be heartbroken and desperate?
“Peng'er, dad is here to see you. Don't worry, I'll definitely save you,” Song Beikun's voice was a bit hoa.r.s.e.
Meanwhile, Song Chengpeng was looking at the ceiling, his face stricken with fear. “Ghosts… so many ghosts… they're going to eat me… save me… I don't want to die…”
Song Beikun wiped his eyes and turned around, looking at Ning Tao. “Cure my son and your friend will be okay. If my son dies, your friend dies.”
Ning Tao said coolly, “Where's my friend?”
Song Beikun said, “Cure my son and you'll get to see him.”
Ning Tao sneered. “I think you're not understanding. Your son is going to die anytime yet you're still negotiating with me? I can afford to wait but can you? If anything happens to my friend, I'll tell you, not just your son, I won't let off anyone who was involved in this. Whatever happened to your son will happen to you too.”
“How dare you threaten me!” said Song Beikun, enraged. It might be his first time being threatened in decades.
Four of the fighters shuffled instantly and surrounded Ning Tao.
Jiang Hao snickered. The atmosphere in the operation room turned frigid!
It was a sign that she was going to make a move. Other than face scans, she could also freeze things. It wouldn't be a big deal if Ning Tao were frozen. He would just have to smash the ice to free himself. However, if ordinary people were frozen, their blood circulation would be frozen and could die immediately!
Just as the tension in the air was about to erupt, a crisp voice was raised in the emergency room. “Doctor Ning, do you really have to take things this far?”
