Ning Tao and Qing Zhui came out of the water onto a small beach a few meters wide. Ning Tao opened the small medicine chest to check whether there was any water in it. As a result, the medicine chest was very dry and cool, even without any water vapor, let alone water.
Qing Zhui held up her dress to twist water, her white long legs exposed in the air. Her coat pressed against her body, and in the sunlight she looked seductive and sultry.
Ning Tao seemed to have been a little "accustomed" to this situation. He once again poured 30 milliliters of ink into the Soil-seeking Inkstone, and then headed in the direction indicated by the scale of ink ripples.
There were no roads in the forest, and there were weeds and stones all over the place. Above was the canopy of the trees, and the vines that had fallen from their branches. Some vines were thicker than a man's arm, and no one knew how many years they had been growing. Along the way, Ning Tao found many herbs, such as glossy ganoderma, coptis chinensis and eucommia ulmoides. They were all wild herbs, not the same as those grown artificially on the market.
Except for a wild glossy ganoderma as big as a plate, Ning Tao did not pick other wild herbs, because the wild glossy ganoderma was one of the raw materials for refining Primary Elixirs, which was useful to him. Other herbs, such as coptis chinensis, paris polyphyllas and eucommia ulmoides, were useless to him, so he did not pick them.
After trudging through the primeval forest on the island for two hours, Ning Tao and Qing Zhui arrived at a crack in the back of the steamed bun-shaped mountain.
This crack looked as if created by a G.o.d with a giant axe, appearing on the mountain without end. It was dozens of meters deep, extending downhill, some parts wide and some parts narrow. Ning Tao stood at the edge of the crack and looked down. The vertical cliff was covered with weeds and vines, and the bottom of the crack was covered with a white mist, so he could not see clearly.
Here, the ink ripples in the Soil-seeking Inkstone no longer pointed to any scale, but converged in the middle from all directions. This scene gave an illusion that there was a hole in the center of the Soil-seeking Inkstone and all the ink was flowing to the hole.
Ning Tao tied the small medicine chest with a vine, carried it on his back, and then crawled to the bottom of the crack by relying on cracks in the rocks, weeds and vines. In the process, he made his eyes and nose to enter the state of looking and smelling. He saw the white fog, which contained spiritual energy, and the content was considerable, far more than that in the pool beside Blackhill Village in Beidu, which was occupied by Bai Jing and Qing Zhui.
Qing Zhui soon discovered this as well, and shouted excitedly, "Brother Ning, can you draw a blood lock here? I'm going to come here often to play, and, practice."
Ning Tao replied, "Sure, let's find the spiritual soil here first."
"All right!" Qing Zhui happily agreed.
More than 10 minutes later, Ning Tao and Qing Zhui came to the bottom of the crack.
The fog at the bottom of the crack was heavier, and the visibility was only a few meters. Beneath their feet was a muddy swamp. In some places there were thick ma.s.ses of shade-loving moss, like stepping stones in a puddle, and in others there was mire, with black mud bubbling from time to time, giving out the clear, spring-like smell of spiritual energy rather than gas or rotting plants or animals.
The ink in the Soil-seeking Inkstone pointed to a scale again, and Ning Tao followed the direction of the scale, stepping forward carefully on the "stepping stones".
Going on for a few meters, the Soil-seeking Inkstone suddenly shook up, all the ink again flowing to its center.
Before them was a mire of more than 100 square meter, in which lay the spiritual soil!
"What's that?" Ning Tao's eyes were suddenly attracted by a plant in the middle of the mire, staring at it.
It was a rice seedling, which had entered the ear sprouting period.
Although Ning Tao was not from the countryside, he knew what rice seedlings looked like. He realized that it was not ordinary rice seedling. The rice seedling was only one third of the height of ordinary rice seedlings, and the ears were very short, with only a few dozen grains, but each one was full. It was completely golden, without any green, and it slightly glowed, like a work of art carved with gold. It stood in the black mud, s.h.i.+ning gold, looking remarkable.
Qing Zhui also saw the rice seedling. She blinked for a moment, and then blurted out, "That's... spiritual grain! The legendary spiritual grain!"
"Spiritual grain? What is it?" Ning Tao asked immediately.
"I've heard my sister say that spiritual grain is a kind of spiritual material in the magic ancient age, which is only owned by those masters of cultivation and even immortals. It is bred by spiritual energy of heaven and earth and grows only in the spiritual soil. And it's so environmentally demanding that it can only grow in swamps where there's fog and only a beam of light comes in," Qing Zhui explained.
"Only a beam of light comes in?"
Subconsciously, Ning Tao looked up and found that a beam of light fell from the crack in the head of the only marsh in this fog-shrouded swamp, and just s.h.i.+ning on the spiritual grain.
"The spiritual grain is just a tonic for ordinary people to prolong their life, but it is an extremely precious alchemy material for pract.i.tioners, and is also one of the indispensable and important spiritual materials for many advanced elixirs. Where there is a spiritual grain, there is the spiritual soil. The spiritual grain is ripe for harvest. What are you waiting for?" Qing Zhui looked more anxious than Ning Tao.
How could Ning Tao not be attracted to this spiritual grain? He wanted both the spiritual soil and the spiritual grain, but the mire in front of him became a big problem. He thought of putting planks on it, but there was not a tree at the bottom of the crack, and only fallen branches which could not give him enough buoyancy to reach the spiritual grain. And what made him headache most was that the spiritual soil was under the mire. He could not go down there and pull it out.
"I'll do it for you," said Qing Zhui, who seemed to read Ning Tao's mind.
Ning Tao shook his head. "No, it's too dangerous. We'd better try something else."
As soon as these words were spoken, Qing Zhui's long cyan dress fell on the moss-covered "stepping stones" at her feet. A nude as beautiful as the statue of Venus appeared in this eerie place.
Ning Tao paused and asked excitedly, "What are you doing?"
Qing Zhui suddenly tapped the ground with her toes, her perfect body— the ratio of the length of her head to her height was one to nine— rose off the ground. With a flip, she popped into the mire.
Ning Tao then came to his senses and tried to grab her foot, but it was late. His hand touched the sole of her foot, and before he could catch it, she sank into the mire.
Ning Tao was in a hurry. He put his hand in the mire to get her, but he caught something hard. In his desperation, he tried to pull it up. However, instead of pulling Qing Zhui up, he pulled up a mutilated skeleton, with ribs, arms, and a half-missing skull.
Ning Tao, with his hair standing on end, waved the skeleton away.
Splas.h.!.+ A green figure shot up from the mire. She had long green hair, green cheeks, and her skin covered with green scales. Her legs joined together and became a snake's tail covered with green scales. She was unstained by mud.
Ning Tao instantly froze on the spot.
She had a demon bone, so she had the demon form. At this time, Qing Zhui's form of half human and half snake was her snake demon form, which was as beautiful as a mermaid, and even more domineering!
Just when Ning Tao was stunned, Qing Zhui swam to the spiritual grain, then dived into the mire and disappeared.
Ning Tao picked up Qing Zhui's green dress, embroidered shoes and underwear, and then walked along the mire. He wanted to find a place closer to the spiritual grain and watch Qing Zhui pick up it and dig for spiritual soil.
Soon he was on the other side of the mire. He failed to find a place closer to the spiritual grain, but accidentally found a stone monument shrouded in fog. As he walked over and looked closer, he got gooseb.u.mps on his back.
The stone tablet was carried by a stone turtle. The stone tablet and the stone turtle were three meters high, but such a huge stone tablet was only engraved with a large character and a sentence.
The large character was "Tang".
That sentence was "The forbidden area of the Tang Sect, and trespa.s.sers will die!"
Behind the stone tablet were a pile of bones as high as a hill, some bones holding swords and other cold weapons in their hands, some bones covered with moss, some bones still left unrotted clothes of ancient times, early modern times and modern times, and there was even an explorer's backpack and exploration tools! The body of the explorer was not completely decomposed, with some flesh left on the skeleton, and visible internal organs in the chest. Apparently the explorer was dead within a year.
If the stone tablet was a tombstone, then the pile of bones behind it was a huge grave!
This was not a natural disaster, but a man-made one.
Ning Tao got furious. "There's no gas in this crack, and it's easy to get down. If someone hadn't killed them, they wouldn't have died. Tang Sect, when you've killed so many people, how dare you brazenly erect a stone tablet here, and occupy this place? This place is made by G.o.d, not your Tang family. Do you think that this place is yours after you put up a stone tablet here? Do you think you're not going to get your comeuppance for killing so many people? I am your comeuppance, and I will run wild here today!"
Splas.h.!.+
Qing Zhui suddenly came out of the mire, holding a piece of green clay in her hand, the size of a basin. On that piece of green clay stood a rice seedling. The rice seedling's root was winding and layered, extending several meters like a waterfall, and then plunged into the spiritual soil.
Qing Zhui grinned. "Brother Ning, I've got it!"
There was a sudden deafening noise above them. "How dare you beasts run amok here!"
The voice was booming like hundreds of people shouting together!
Whoos.h.!.+ Whoos.h.!.+ Whoos.h.!.+
Hiss! Hiss! Hiss...
Suddenly in the fog came the sound of sharp instruments tearing the air.
Ning Tao suddenly realized that something was wrong and began to rush to a slightly concave rock wall in the mountain, while shouting, "Come here!"
He was struck by dozens of poisoned flying needles and some darts as he spoke.
Qing Zhui shrewdly dove into the mire when she heard the sound of hidden weapons tearing the air. When she came out again, she had already reached the cliff beside the mire.
Ning Tao bit his right index finger, drew a blood lock on the rock wall as fast as he could, and then opened the door with the key.
Qing Zhui got up from the mire, holding the spiritual soil and spiritual grain. Her legs came back, but they were more striking than the tail when she was in in the form of a demon.
Regardless of anything else, Ning Tao grabbed her waist and ran with her into the convenient door.
No sooner had the door closed than an old man in white appeared in the fog. His white clothes fluttered and he landed noiselessly.
The next second, the old man in white let out a scream.
"Ah—"
A second ago, he was elegant as an immortal.
At this point, he looked as if an immortal had stepped on s.h.i.+t after falling to earth.
