"I don't know what you're talking about." April said as blood trickled down from the corner of her mouth. A bigger crowd surrounded the store. The usuals came by to hear April sing while some onlookers just came by to watch the fight. "Darling, I said I would handle this." The shop owner said affectionately as he grabbed his wife's hand and kissed the back of it. His wife instanty blushed and calmed down.
With a giant smile the shop owner turned from his wife and approached April. "Sir?" April called out. He stretched out his hand and he helped April up onto her feet. He dusted her off and with his smile still in place and whispered. "I gave you extra so play along." Then punched April right in the stomach.
April doubled over and spit up from the force. "I told you we're already over! So get out! I helped you with your problem so never appear in front of me again!" He shouted and watched as April dropped to her knees, tears streaming down her face from the pain. Everyone started to mumble to each other as others gasped in disbelief. "Come on darlng, let's go inside. I will close the shop early today so we can go out to dinner." The owner said as he walked back to his wife.
April trembled as she kneeled with he head hanging. She crumpled the white envelope in her hand. She wanted to throw it into the owner's face and scream at the top of her lungs but her family's faces popped into her head. After she caught her breath she got up and walked away. She didn't stop by anywhere else, she just limped straight home so that she could treat her wounds.
When she got home she noticed some police officers standing outside her door. The looked like they were checking to see if anyone was home. She rushed up to them as fast as she could, wincing as she wobbled. They heard her approaching and turned to see her. April caught their jaws dropping, she figured she looked worse then how she felt. "Miss are you alright?!" An older looking officer shouted as he eyed April.
"That's not important now. What are you doing here?! Why isn't my dad answering the door?! Is everything okay?!" April shouted as fear and anxiety crept into her heart. "Can we go inside to talk?" The younger officer asked. "Yes, yes, please come on in." She said as she fumbled to retrieve her house key. The moment she opened the door she gasped. The house was completely trashed. "DAD?! DAD?!" April shouted as she rushed into the house.
The officers armed themselves as they followed behind her. April rushed around checking every room, when she reached hers she was devasted. It was the most destroyed room in the whole house. Her mattress was torn apart, her belongings were smashed, drawers were pulled out and turned over and her clothes were thrown all over the place. Her heart went into her throat and she could feel herself suffocating from anxiety.
She quickly moved to where she hid her piggy bank. She moved somethings around and found her piggybank's face on the floor. Her money was gone, all she had left was what was in the envelope. She thanked herself for not throwing it into the owner's face. With a heavy sigh she went to find the police officers. "I think my father is gone." April announced.
"Do you think someone took him?" The younger officer asked as they both put their guns away. April shook her head no. "I think he trashed the house then went out with the money he found." April said as she gave the officers a pitiful smile. "Do you want to make an incident report?" The younger officer asked. "No, no... I don't think so. He's my father." April replied hesitantly.
"What about, um... um all this?" The young officer asked as he gestured to her whole body. "A giant misunderstanding between me and another couple." April explained. "Oh..." The young officer said. "Are you okay?" He then asked. "Cough, cough. Miss Stand there was a reason why we came down to your home." The older officer said as he gave his parnter a side glance.
"I'm not the homewrecker or sl*t the grocery owner's wife is looking for. I'm not going to jail for something I never did." April said loudly as she balled her hands into fists. "What?!" The young officer yelled. The older one shot him a dirty look and it made him shut his mouth immediately. "I'm not the homewrecker. That woman can even take me to a doctor! I'm still a virgin so there's no way I'm carrying his baby in my womb." April shouted even louder.
Both men turned beat red at her words. Women were supposed to be docile and never speak of certain things but her mother, father, brothers and sisters never educated her on proper mannerisms. She just learned to speak her mind to whomever was willing to listen and to be quiet when someone stronger then her picked a fight. Her father taught her that very early on in life.
"I-I'm so sorry." The young officer said as he looked at April with his soft green eyes. The older officer coughed again then shook his head no. "Miss Stand we're here because something happened to your mother." The older officer finally said. "M-m-my mom? W-what h-happened t-to m-my mom?" April said with a heartbreaking tone.
The young officer reached out and covered April's hand with his own. He looked at April sympathetically and opened his mouth but no words came out. "I'm sorry but your mother pa.s.sed away at her job. They found her slumped at her sewing station. We need you to come down with us to identify her." The older officer finally said.
