What the Yang's hadn't noticed was Ying Ying's unsettling emotions, 'Something is definitely wrong with Hen Qing. The way she easily let me off and tried to act normal in front of me. I need to keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't do anything reckless to ruin their wedding.'
After saying her farewells to the Yang's and thanking them for their hospitality, she moved back to her house. When Ying Ying walked in with her luggage, Hen Qing was in the middle of eating her breakfast. Seeing her mother's sudden appearance made her choke on her cereal.
She coughed, "Mom? Why are you here so early? And with all these bags too?"
Ying Ying told her that it was a sudden decision and that it was meant to be a surprise for her. Hen Qing didn't believe in her mother's words completely since she knew that her mother had been covering the fact that Huan Hei is getting married from her.
"Well, great! We can spend more time together. Since you are going to live here, that means you aren't working there anymore?"
"Mhmm. Mommy will stay with you like you wanted." Ying Ying sat down next to Hen Qing and poured herself a cup of water.
"Then mom, you're not working under a contract now. Who did you work for and where have you been living?" Hen Qing picked up her spoon and started eating again.
"How many times do you need me to repeat this? I already said I can't tell you anything about that family?" Ying Ying rubbed her temples and leaned back on the chair.
Hen Qing dropped her spoon into the bowl and watched it drown in the milk, "Mom, you're no longer working there anyways. Besides, I'm your daughter. Why are you hiding from me?"
Ying Ying frustratingly typed, "I'm not hiding anything. You're old enough to understand the terms and conditions of a contract that once you sign it and promise that you won't disclose any information about that job, you can't do it even after you quit. That is an ethical decision."
"This is not business cla.s.s. I'm an art major. I can care less about those whatsoever terms. Right now, my concern is as daughter and mother, why are you hiding more and more from me?" She pushed the bowl aside and tapped her fingers on the diner table.
"Hen Qing, mom isn't hiding anything from you. You're overthinking. When you start working, you'll understand this contract stuff more." She took the bowl and walked over to the sink, avoiding Hen Qing's interrogative gaze. As Ying Ying walked around her, Hen Qing's eyes followed, not missing the slightest expression on her face.
"Mom. I'll quit stalling our time and straightforwardly ask you this. Why didn't you tell me about Yang Ya Nuo and Huan Hei's wedding? Why did you hide the fact that you have been living under Yang Ya Nuo's care? Did the Yang's finally brainwash you?" The pace of her tapping fingers was quicker than playing Chopin on the piano.
"What are you talking about?" Ying Ying turned around, meeting her dark eyes. 'No matter how much we spoke or argued, she never had this type of look in her eyes...what happened?'
Finally, Hen Qing couldn't stand Ying Ying for acting dumb anymore and slammed her palms onto the table, shaking the flowers in the vase. "Enough is enough! Stop treating me as an idiot! Do you really think that I don't know the heck is going on here? Don't treat me like I'm stupid or blind! I already knew that they were going to get married! All along, I only wanted to see whether you would tell me about this."
"How did you know?" Ying Ying opened her mouth in astonishment.
Hen Qing let out a cold stare, "Is that all you care about? How did I hear about their marriage news and not even worrying about what I'll think about the situation? About you, lying and covering it from me?"
"I didn't lie. I just didn't mention it in our previous conversations." Ying Ying argued. It's true, she never mentioned anything about the Yang's and she never asked. Therefore, at most it was avoiding the topic, never covering up anything.
"Hah, you know, three and a half years ago, I left after saying I'd rather not have you back if I knew you'd change that much after the kidnap. I felt really bad about it afterwards. I kept telling myself that regardless of how wrong I felt, you were still my mother, my family. But now, I question whether you're really my mother. You're better off going to Yang Ya Nuo..."
"Why bother coming back to pretend like nothing ever happened? You're just here to spy on me. You can leave. I don't want to see you anymore. I can survive on my own without a mother like you." She turned around and walked back to her room, slamming the door shut.
Ying Ying watched her walk up the stairs and heard the huge slam. 'Did I do wrong this time? I deliberately didn't tell her about their marriage because I didn't want her to harm Ya Nuo and Huan Hei. But at the same time, I also didn't want to upset her. Sigh... Being a mother is so hard. I'll make her favorite dessert and bring it up later.'
-20 minutes later -
Ying Ying was used to being close with Hen Qing, so knocking on the door was never necessary. However, three and a half years can definitely change a person's perspective and treatment for another. When Ying Ying opened the door, Hen Qing had just completed her makeup and lifted her top up to get changed.
Hen Qing turned around and pushed her out of the room without hesitation. While shoving her out, Hen Qing also knocked over the dessert, spilling it on Ying Ying's hand. Ignoring Ying Ying's painful hiss, she slammed the door and locked it.
Ying Ying rubbed her burnt skin and walked downstairs, 'Right, it's been a few years. I forgot that my innocent little Qing was now different. All grown up. She's big enough to get a permanent tattoo on her lower back without telling me about it. I guess only time will tell whether I was right to not tell her about their marriage ceremony.'
Inside her room, Hen Qing pulled up her top and looked at the mark on her lower back, 'she didn't see it right?' She shook her head and quickly changed into a short sleeve top and jeans. Then, she looked at the box of art supplies, in which, most of them were sharp tools such as X-acto knives and different sized tr.i.m.m.i.n.g essentials.
She picked up an X-acto knife and let the reflection of the sunlight s.h.i.+ne onto it. 'This time... without fail...' Once again, the sunlight highlighted her side profile on the reflection of her room mirror, revealing the noticeable thick coverage on her face that still hinted the deep creases hiding underneath it.
