Money? Family? Love? Status?
Unknown whether real or not, but statistics were telling the world at least thirty percent of its inhabitants was crazy. And since it was about insanity and not mental disabilities, there was no questioning of whether it was inborn or not.
The craziness talked about here was definitely that of acquired one, from the environment and special circ.u.mstances, or driven by a catalyst that broke something in one's delicate heart and mind. So what the heck was this catalyst?
It actually differed from person to person, depending on what he or she held dearest to her heart. Of course, the mental strength of the person played an indispensable part in this but the large factor was still what he or she placed dear in his heart or mind.
For the Chris of three years ago, it was definitely Felicity. She was his childhood friend whom he became so obsessed with for more than seven years.
He 'was' crazy in love with her that when he learned of what she did with other men, he only felt angry and betrayed for a short while before realizing he still cared. The idiot him who had endured enough self-pity still cared and didn't mind turning a blind eye to her scandals and deeds. And when she died, he felt dead inside too, losing any desire to socialize and break out of his cold sh.e.l.l. No, he even lacked the drive to live.
Only few would understand how hard it was to love with your all, receive nothing at all in return, and even walk life carrying the emotional pain left by that person.
Were it not for Leo Jones indirect reminder of his parents' importance to his life, he would have fallen to depravity or something worse than that. After all, by that time, he had already contracted the devil's intangible incarnate - the system.
The worried tone of the self-proclaimed most behaved devil inside his brain worriedly asked, and he had to add that this kind of tone was very rare to hear from this foreign and unwelcomed ent.i.ty.
With a sneer, he answered, 'Why wouldn't I be okay? How could a little trick do me harm? I'm no more the immature guy of yesteryears. At least, amateur emotion games like this won't work on me. Otherwise, those guts-wrenching missions and dramas I partook in would have served no lesson in my life!'
In front of him, Alda's palm was open. The fairly big bead-like device shone with a soft glow on it. The woman activated it without waiting for his answer. When she pressed its b.u.t.ton, light particles resembling luminant dust rose from its surface without pause and formed a projection shaped like a TV screen.
The sight was very magical and Alda seemed to want to see a surprised reaction from him due to it.
If Alda only did not show a half-expectant, half-proud expression to him, his suspicions of her would not have reached a definite answer. At that moment, he simply wanted to thank her for this small but meaningful blunder.
"It's around September if I remember correctly..." Scenes began to show on the screen and from the looks of it, she planned to be a live commentator or narrator.
Chris did not say anything. His eyes alternately moved from her to the holographic projection.
He must admit that seeing that girl who haunted him and gave him so many nightmares for years had triggered mixed emotions in him. His pupils dilated a bit. Especially when it got to the part where he saw the unspeakable played in the video.
"..."
'This is...'
Apart from feeling conflicted and a bit nauseated, there was really nothing else that budded inside him. No pain. Only a bit of shock. That shock did not even make his face show a slight frown.
In contrast, it was the gentle-looking middle-aged woman who was on the verge of breaking down and turning into a sobbing mess.
"... T-this is the cause of the disaster... I only believed what my eyes that time saw. I didn't hear out Felicity's side. My poor Felicity actually is just a victim... Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine my husband to be a demon that deserves to be burnt on a stake alive! He, he is actually the one who pushed our daughter to be like that!!! A wild beast in a human's skin!!!"
Chris looked away. He felt empty. What should be said at a times like this? Based on the madam's words, it was the father's sin. He agreed with the sentiment of the woman. No matter if it was an outsider or not, it would be impossible to not wish for that man to be condemned to h.e.l.l for doing that to his own flesh and blood.
'Hmm.' He acknowledged.
However, deep inside he was cursing and thinking that he deserved a punishment worse than death. Who cares if his corpse got eaten by wild dogs? Since he immediately died, he didn't feel the pain and suffering he should have. Where was justice then?
For a long time, his brows were deeply furrowed. Yet despite this, he was clear-headed enough to remember that even though he felt very bad for Felicity, the dead shouldn't affect the lives of the living.
He gingerly said, "Ms. Dimatrionez... I'm sorry for everything. I sympathized. But what does this have to do with me and the girl you kidnapped?"
The crying woman stilled and slowly turned her head to face him. There was no great disbelief in her expression. But the sadness she made him see almost made him feel so guilty of himself.
"Have you no love for her anymore? Or is it that you still hate her despite seeing this?" she quietly asked.
Chris shook his head. The woman widened her eyes as if she got enlightened to something.
"I see. You must not probably get what I mean earlier."
She looked down and Chris could swear that if he didn't know she was a mentally unstable person, he would have recommended her to begin her acting career.
"This is a painful thing for me. But I guess nothing's to be concealed now since I have already shown you even this. That time, when I witnessed what those two are doing, all I thought is to kill both of them, then kill myself. I don't want anyone to know what kind of messed up thing our family has become without me knowing."
'Fifteen minutes...' The half-host closed his eyes and said, "Aunt Alda..."
"Sorry."
While the woman was absorbed in the emotion that drowned her after being called 'Aunt' by him again, he materialized the weapon in his hand and pointed it at her direction.
"Chri-" The shock the weapon brought her was quite immense. Alda couldn't move for some time, but before getting struck by it, she had already dropped to the ground and rolled away.
Chris took that chance to ran towards the cabinet. With a slight pull, the whole door got torn down. "Alessa!"
A lost expression appeared on his face when he saw someone different in that place. It was a silently crying girl with familiar features, curled up inside the cupboard. "Who are you?" He unconsciously blurted out.
A few beats later, when he looked back and realized Alda was getting up, he came to his senses and urgently asked the system where she was.
Without hesitating, he pulled that female stranger out at the same time that he tore down the other door. The sounds created by that action was quite loud and nerve-wracking. The girl he tossed out of the cabinet looked dumbfoundedly at the man in a red raincoat.
"F*ck!"
It was Leo Jones handiwork. That was what he confirmed after seeing the many bombs with the same countdown time strapped all over Alessa's mid-torso.
One of the bombs had a small piece of paper stuck on it.
'Hehehe, h.e.l.lo! Aiya! I'm sorry for doing this, but I must make sure you don't mess up with the operation so I had this pretty lady gift-wrapped like this for you. But hey, don't angry, okay? It's not like she will die. You won't let her, right? After all, if you can't salvage this situation, you are likely to die in the long run. Heh, don't count on luck too much, newbie!'
"F*ck you, Leo Jones!"
The same time that the furious half-host roared this, Alda Dimatrionez stood up with a crazy and angry look put on.
