Henry blushed enjoying the teasing attention that Ellie was giving him. It kept him on his toes. He mused that he should have asked his parents for a sister when they were still alive. It would have made his life so much more fun.
The sun shone through the clouds to make one sparkling glint on Henry's sungla.s.ses as they cruises out of the city. The heavy polluted city seemed to rise like a grey misty ghost behind them as the green pastures of the land ahead glowed with a homey atmosphere. They actually drove an hour out of the city until Ellie could no longer see the familiar spires of the skysc.r.a.per city. They hit the suburbs when Henry finally pulled off the interstate to a dusty exit. The city was called Tourney and if they had never come here, Ellie would have never noticed it existed. When they finally pulled up in front of a ma.s.sive trucker garage Henry finally turned off the engine. Henry had to give it to Ellie for being content in looking out the window instead of bugging him to where they were going. He liked that she could understand when he wanted conversation and when he wanted quiet. He didn't know that it was an admirable quality until he had it. "This is my favorite place in New York, even though it is a bit of a ha.s.sle to drive so far out of the city every time to get to it." An oil smeared mechanic walked out of a door and smudged even more grime onto his forehead as he leaned over to see who had come. Henry got out of the car and threw him the keys as Ellie watched in fascination as Henry interacted with him. He had obviously come to take the car so Ellie was faced with a bit of a problem.
She got the car door open and swung her legs outside. She touched the uneven gravel gingerly with her white sneakers as she pondered how to get up. She finally decided to use her cane as a lever and was happy for a second to be successful before Henry caught her unsteady body. She pushed him back as she tried to stand on her own, but the ground was too unsteady and she fell onto Henry's arm with her full body weight.
Henry's response was automatic as he swung her around. He carefully straightened her so that both feet were on the solid concrete sidewalk before he went back to get her cane. Henry had leaned her against the barn wall where there was a handicap railing. As he handed her his cane she used his shoulder to steady herself and for a couple seconds their faces were inches apart. His fleece jacket was pressed against her nose and she could smell the smoky sandalwood cologne that he favored.
