It was because of Zylvia. He worried about her to distraction. While she had a.s.sured him that she was feeling fine and much better than she had he still could not help himself. What if it came back?
It was probably a good thing that, for once, Kaldrek had absolutely no official work to do. Otherwise, there may have been some issues. At least it did not matter much if he was distracted when doing his own projects.
He did not find it at all difficult to pull away from what he had ostensibly been working on(which if anyone asked him what it was he would not be able to answer them at all) in order to go eat lunch. He wanted to check on his wife, ask how she had been doing.
When he finally saw her, she looked fairly good to his eyes as he looked her up and down. Not as pale as she had been last night, and even practically glowing. He breathed a sigh of relief, glad that his beloved felt better.
Zylvia lit up as soon as she saw him and swiftly walked over, wrapping herself around his arm. She grinned at him brightly.
"Kaldrek, my husband." He felt his smile grow even bigger hearing her voice calling him, "I am going to need to talk to you after lunch."
"Alright, love." He ruffled her hair and gave her a bright smile. Pulling out a chair, he made her sit down and brought her food.
As she thanked him, he finally realized that they were not alone. Fayre and the princess were there as well, followed by the young sorcerer knight. Not that it would have changed what he had done, but he felt just a little embarra.s.sed that he had not even seen them.
But he had been so worried about Zylvia this morning that his eyes had just sought her out and his brain had registered nothing but her person around him.
The others sat down to eat, and Kaldrek gave them a nod of acknowledgement. Fayre smiled back at him, Hazel and Asrar both gave a slight nod back. After acknowledging their presence, Kaldrek felt slightly better about not noticing them at first.
He sat beside of his wife and slipped his hand onto her lap, stroking her thigh. He hid a smile at her slowly reddening cheeks. She slipped her hand underneath his, lacing their fingers together in order to stop his teasing.
Feeling her soft hand in his own he did not mind her foiling his attempts to make her blush. Instead, he began to grin, as he stroked one of her fingers with his thumb. He found himself gazing at her face, noticing that she was smiling at his actions.
He heard the queen speaking and looked over at her, "You two are just in your own little world, aren't you?" She was laughing as she spoke. Kaldrek nearly startled as he realized that his best friend had joined them when he was preoccupied.
He was really out of it today…He chuckled softly, shaking his head, "Apparently."
Zylvia shrugged, "I have something on my mind."
Fayre smiled, "You might but Kaldrek has no excuse."
Kaldrek shook his head helplessly, "I can have a day where I am a bit out of it upon occasion."
"This does not seem like your usual preoccupied with work air though," Jayesh pointed out.
"Well, Zylv was not feeling well last night so I was a bit worried. That's all." He c.o.c.ked an eyebrow, "It is perfectly reasonable for a man to worry about his wife, is it not?"
Jayesh nodded, accepting it as true. Zylvia however squeezed his hand, "I am fine, Kaldrek dear. No need to worry about me."
"I can't help it." Leaning forward he kissed her forehead. "I worry about my wife."
She sighed and turned her attention back to her food. Kaldrek gazed at her for a minute before turning away. She was obviously feeling better.
After lunch, his wife tugged on his arm, pulling him from the room.
"So, love, what is it you wanted to talk to me about?" An easy smile graced his lips as he wondered what this was about. There was a shy look to her bright eyes, and a happy glow to her face. But she hesitated to say anything.
"Um, well, Kaldrek." She fidgeted and he wrapped an arm around her trying to calm her down, "You know how I was feeling sick yesterday?"
"Yes." He gave her a tight smile, "I was pretty worried." He really hoped it was not anything bad.
"Imaybepregnant." She spoke in a rush and he frowned.
"Uh, sweetheart. I really could not catch that. What was it?"
"I might be pregnant." She took a deep breath, "Not just the nausea, I have had… other symptoms. But I am not completely su-"
"You may be what?" Kaldrek stared at his wife. Complex emotions rose in him.
When she answered him, "Pregnant, I may be pregnant," a huge grin came to his face and he swept her into his arms. Even though he had complicated emotions, the biggest one that swept from him was joy at the thought of his wife and him having a little one of their own.
He set her back down, "You are going to be a great mom."
She leaned into him, "I said I was not completely sure though… you might want to tone down the enthusiasm."
"Not happening, love." He grinned at her, "If you are wrong, you are wrong but I would feel bad if you were right and I did not get excited." He kissed her nose and pulled away.
