It was the palace painter who had no weapon on him. After Dana spoke, something heavy flew by and hit the table.
"Heek!"
She tried to shrug it off and turned towards the Court Painter.
"I'm working."
He had to continue to observe the Emperor. Whether or not his lord was bearing his sword or wearing his crown, the Court Painter did not care. There was a sketchbook and charcoal in his hands.
"Ugh…"
Dana felt both admiration and fear for him. She swallowed her desire for the right to be able to draw the Emperor to her heart's content and the security of being the Court Painter. The job was both honorable and a way of life. Not only was it wonderful to see the Emperor, but it was also his duty. His life had to be revolved around it.
Not to mention the Emperor s.h.i.+ned best from afar. Dana had to settle down her jealousy.
Thump whump!
A rebel flew towards the table and landed on it. He quickly tried to get back up to face the Emperor, but as he was doing so he found Dana and the painter.
At that moment, an unlucky foreboding feeling ran down Dana's spine.
“No, no, no, don't come!”
The bigger man didn't bother listening to her and grabbed Dana as his hostage. He held his blade under her chin.
"Don't move! If you do, I'll kill this b.i.t.c.h!"
"…Even if you move, this b.i.t.c.h is already dying…"
Thanks to Dana, the heavy atmosphere was destroyed.
No one did anything for a moment. The rebel was thoroughly embarra.s.sed for Dana's slip of the tongue.
"If you move, I'll kill this b.i.t.c.h!”
He tried again, but too much has already been said and the horror of a hostage being taken disappeared. There were even some people who couldn't hold their laughter.
The Emperor looked straight at Dana. His sword sloped down and was covered in black, dried blood from his opponents.
How much better will it be to be cut down by that bloodied sword? Dana was even more terrified by the Emperor, who was looking at the rebel instead of the threatening blade at her neck.
"Are you going to let me die?!"
When the Emperor didn't react, Dana frowned deeply. The Emperor didn't look nervous either. He looked like a predator with his prey right in front of him. Like a baby transfixed on a toy, how would you be able to get their attention? She was stuck.
To get the h.e.l.l out of this situation, Dana would need to be rescued first, but the Emperor was still. Then her malfunctioning brain suddenly came up with a thought.
'Aren't I in His Majesty's way?!'
What the Emperor wants is to make a mess; however, Dana disturbed that. After figuring out what he wanted that means she would have to…?
'I have to get away!'
Dana's body tensed all over. She will not stop his will. She will do whatever it takes to enforce it!
"I was not going to let you di…"
"For His Majestyyyyyy!"
Right as the Emperor was speaking, Dana poured all her energy into her battle cry and thus drowning out the quiet royal. Earlier the Emperor had said that he wanted to 'peel their skin' and those words gave Dana enough desire for self-preservation to escape.
In the middle of her shouting, Dana stomped on her captor's foot. The agility that she didn't even know that she had appeared in full bloom during this emergency.
"Agh, you b.i.t.c.h!"
She then hurriedly elbowed his face, aiming for his nose.
"Agh!"
The rebel screamed and fell down. The blade that was threatening her life was removed and Dana quickly ran to safety.
"Do what you want to do! I am not blocking Your Majesty anymore!" she cheered for the Emperor once she was safe.
“Woaaaah! Your Majesty! Your Majesty! Do what you have to do!"
The crowd cheered and repeated Dana's words and the Emperor instantly became a blurry figure. There were still some rebels left and he set his mind on the rest of them. It didn't take long. Thanks to Dana, the atmosphere became similar to a race track.
Besides that, the situation was handled neatly and the defeated rebels were tied up and dragged by the guards.
"What…?"
Dana was cheering pa.s.sionately with the rest of the audience, but she suddenly found something strange.
'Isn't this advancing too smoothly…?'
Everything seemed to flow like water. Dana recalled that at the beginning, everyone targeted just the Emperor. She started to grasp something.
The Emperor wasn't surprised when swords were targeting him and the other knights were all unharmed. If this was an attempted a.s.sasination, then it would make sense for the knights to also join the fight. However, not only were they not surprised about the ambush, they watched the fight. Not one person ran towards the commotion either.
The Emperor's special knights were supposed to be the best of the best, but they stood by during an emergency. Not one knight helped. It was like this was planned from the beginning.
Dana sucked in her breath. She really felt like she was in danger earlier, but was the hostage situation all part of the plan too? She felt gooseb.u.mps on her arms.
Dana looked around at the other n.o.bles again. No one looked bewildered or nervous.
'Everyone knew…?'
It was clear that none of this was a surprise to them.
"If the Pinil royalty still want independence, then I will listen. However, you will not be forgiven if you burden us with your self-interest and further threaten the Empire."
That was what the Emperor said as he defeated the last rebel. It was dramatic, much like a play.
"Woah! Your Majesty!"
"Hail the Empire! Hail the Emperor!"
The cheering in Gundal came to her mind. In terms of enthusiasm, this scene was no different between commoners and n.o.bles.
All the gore was immediately cleaned up and cheery music started playing again.
Dana wasn't as enthusiastic as before. When she thought that this might all be planned, she didn't know what to do and felt like she was losing her mind.
Dana felt lightheaded and headed towards the refreshment table. The people who saw her came to talk to her along the way.
"Are you okay? You are so wonderful for doing everything to not get in His Majesty's way."
"I believe that this is the first time I met such a brave lady."
"Thank you…"
Dana answered meekly and fled. She hid herself in the corner of the ballroom to avoid talking to people. She sat next to a transparent pillar and thanks to the fish swimming in it, she was able to hide properly. She leaned on it and sighed.
Madam Rurin said that it was hard to succeed as a painter if she only drew portraits. This was accompanied by the fact that most paintings were sold as maps or through connections. Dana didn't need to worry about any of that, but she still felt exhausted thinking about networking.
Let's rest a little more, just for a while. Dana sighed and leaned her back on the pillar. It's definitely not easy living here.
"Are you okay?"
“Oh, yes, thank you … Ugh,” Dana reflexively replied but then gasped.
"Yo-oo-ur Majesty!”
"Just Your Majesty."
"Your Majesty!"
"If you do not want to be found, you should lower your tone."
"…Your Majesty…"
"Can you stop calling me?" The Emperor asked but Dana couldn't respond. The effects of being forced to learn a foreign language and use it all day and night had put her at her limit. She was only here for 3 years so far and had done way too much talking in order to cope up.
The Emperor's question wasn't difficult and it would be easy for Dana to answer if she listened carefully; however, her brain had already declared a long-standing strike.
The fish swimming next to him s.h.i.+mmered and its scales reflected by the sunlight shone brighter on his hair. The glorious Emperor was right in front of her and answering his question about whether she was okay or not wasn't important to her right now. She felt her heart was in danger of bursting. Dana felt like she was about to faint as she clutched her chest.
His Majesty was the kind of person who would beat people to the bone, strip off their skin, and stuff their lungs. And yet he was still so beautiful.
"No answer. I a.s.sumed you are not?"
"No!" Dana replied, sitting up straight like a soldier.
"I'm glad you're feeling well. However, don't do that next time."
"I'll be careful!"
"No, you don't need to be careful… I should be careful."
"I will not be caught next time!"
"No, I mean. If this happens again, do not do anything and stay still," the Emperor patiently explained. His voice was consistently low, but there was some peculiar cry that reached her ears and touched her heart.
Dana relished in listening to his calm voice. The tension in her head from the events earlier was now releasing.
"Was the plan for me to keep still?"
The Emperor's expression subtly changed. "Plan? Didn't Madam Rurin tell you anything?"
"Madam Rurin is very meticulous. She didn't tell me a single thing."
"No, I mean, were you told beforehand?"
If she was told about it earlier, she wouldn't want to be there in the first place. Not only did Madam Rurin did not tell Dana about the plan, she also did not tell her she was the one who organized the whole ballroom. Plus, Dana wouldn't have had fun at the ball. Until the knife came at her neck, she thought the Madam was only a ballroom organizer.
"I did not know, but I know all the other n.o.bles did."
"You would be surprised how many did not."
"The women."
The Emperor laughed briefly at Dana's short answer that she gave out because she was so nervous. Her disrespect towards him wasn't bad enough for him to point it out because today she was a hero who overcame her fear of having a blade aimed at her neck. She was forgiven.
"But how did you know that this was all planned?"
Dana's eyes flashed. "So it was really all staged?"
The Emperor laughed.
"It would be a big deal if the Imperial Palace's guards performed so poorly. From the time I unsheathed my sword, some people have already expected it."
"We- Well, what about me?"
"You were not." He slightly frowned. It was an accident for Dana to get caught up in it and the Emperor felt embarra.s.sed that she was put in danger.
The n.o.bles invited today were limited to the top n.o.bles in the Empire. There were n.o.bles whose families were there since the beginning of Telan, and the new ones who were recruited when the Empire was established.
Imperial integration was not for everyone so it wasn't difficult to predict that some people would plan to revolt and disturb the peace of the Empire. This incident was a warning to people who were planning to start an uprising and also, it was a performance to ensure that the people have nothing to fear.
The rebels came unexpectedly, but the Emperor already came up with a plan to avoid any harm to the n.o.bles. He looked as cool as possible and drove them in formation that made them easy to capture them. So far everything went well.
But towards the middle, a hostage was unexpectedly taken.
It was good that Dana escaped and got out of the Emperor's way, but the Emperor was also concerned with the fact that one of his subjects got involved.
He went to examine her from head to toe to see if she had any injuries. If even one strand of hair was damaged, he felt it was his responsibility.
The Emperor's pure intention was misconstrued before Dana's innocent mind. Even though he was just looking at her, her fast beating heart felt like it was being pierced. Was there something wrong with her? Her heart is going to stop at this rate.
It was impolite not to meet his eyes, but she wasn't yet immune to the sight before her. She had to restrain her body from trying to wiggle everywhere. The Emperor was taking care of her, she had to endure.
"…Wait, here."
The Emperor moved his face closer to her. He was close enough to touch her nose.
"Heek!"
Dana was surprised but she couldn't back up because the column was behind her. The Emperor didn't notice her expression as he was worried about her injury.
On Dana's neck was one thin red line which would've been invisible as long as no one looked closer.
"There is blood. Does it hurt?"
Dana loudly squeaked something that wasn't an answer. Her neck was scratched, but she never noticed.
Because he didn't hear her answer, the Emperor s.h.i.+fted his eyes to her face. His face moved close enough for her to feel his breath. His blue eyes gleamed like jewels from the light reflected from the pillars.
"Are you really okay?"
Time and s.p.a.ce seem to have distorted and extended like stretchy cheese for Dana because the Emperor's question moved in a very slow manner and barely reached her ears.
Arrreeee youuu reeeaaaallllyyy okkaaaaayyy?
She felt that she sold her soul in order for this moment to unfold before her in slow motion.
However, the Emperor thought that Dana's encounter with the rebel was the reason why she wasn't answering and asked again.
"It hurts?"
Iiiiittttt hurrrrrttts?
Somewhere in Dana's absentminded head something shouted: His Majesty asked you a question!
"Oh, no!"
"Really? I'm glad you're not hurt. If you're feeling unwell in the future, please send a message to the palace. I will compensate for the medicine and the doctor's fees," he declared as he turned around and left.
"Oh my lord…"
Dana, who was finally released from the Emperor's gaze, slumped down. Her heart felt like it just jumped out of her chest and she felt tears streaming down her face. She grabbed her face with both hands and sighed.
"Oh my G.o.d I love it here…"
