Though Lu Feng acted like he was not worried, his mind was following how his mother was doing. At midnight when everyone left or went to sleep, he went to his mother and sat beside her. He felt bad to see her like this, but there was nothing he could do to make her feel better. Some time pa.s.sed by, he was sitting there and Lu Han came to the room.

It startled Lu Feng, but he continued sitting there. Lu Han didn't ask him to go out or anything because he understood Lu Feng's situation. When he asked Lu Feng to stay away from their mother because he was worried about her and couldn't think about anything. Lu Han sat in one chair silently, not saying a word to Lu Feng.

After a while, Lu Feng asked, "What did the doctor say?"

"She would be fine. We just need to take care of her and not give her any kind of stress," Lu Han replied and continued. "Her blood pressure shot up suddenly. If we keep stressing her, it would be bad for her health. That's why I asked you to stay away from her."

"I understand, brother."

It stressed Lu Han as it caught him up between his mother and younger brother. "We should find a way so that everything would be fine and the mother would be happy too."

"There is no way other than mother giving up on what she wants," said Lu Feng.

"She won't give up, Lu Feng, so it would be better if we do something for her. I hope you understand this time as I won't forgive you if something happened to her. I will forget you are my younger brother. I won't hesitate to put all the blame on you and break relations.h.i.+ps with you." 2

"Elder brother, I know her condition shocked and made you feel worried but give some time and she would be fine."

"It's been eight to nine years, Lu Feng, and she is still the same. I don't know what happened suddenly, but she is too determined to do it this time and I know she won't back down."

"What do you want me to do, elder brother?" Lu Feng asked.

"That I don't know but I just want you to do anything that can make our mother happy. If you can't do it, then you better stay away from her and me too. I will forget I have a younger brother." 1

Lu Han, who always supported Lu Feng, suddenly changed, and it shocked Lu Feng. Before Lu Feng could say anything, Lu Han said, "Next time come to mother only if you are sure you can do what she wants from you or you better not show your face to her."

Lu Feng didn't know what to say to his brother. "Now you can leave, Lu Feng. Come back only if you decide something. It's sad that when our mother was fighting with her bad health, her most capable son whom she loved the most was busy drinking and enjoying somewhere out." 1

So many things were going in his mind. One side he had his mother and on the other side the whole family. The pale face of his mother in the hospital bed was flas.h.i.+ng in front of his eyes and words from his elder brother were ringing in his ears again and again.

Lu Feng looked frustrated and angry. He was angry as he couldn't do anything for his mother that could make her feel proud of him. He remembered, when he was young, how much his mother felt proud and happy about him being the smartest kid around and always dreamt of him to be at the best position where she would show the world. She always encouraged him to work hard and achieve his dreams. 2

Lu Feng remembered how much she loved him as if he was the most precious jewel of her life. The caring, loving and smiling face of his mother was flas.h.i.+ng in front of his eyes with the memories from his childhood. The mother he remembered from the past was nowhere to be seen now. She was a changed person, and he was the reason for it as he did nothing but to let her down.

He never hated his mother but just there was a reason that he had to act cold towards her and she never complained about it. She accepted his behavior and became accustomed to it and even gave him s.p.a.ce by not meddling in his life. She never asked him why he was distant to her even though she was not at fault. In exchange for it, she just wanted something from him and he couldn't fulfill it.

Being frustrated, he threw the bottle in his hands on one rock, resulting in breaking it into pieces. Some time pa.s.sed by in silence while he was drinking from another bottle. He heard a sound from the tree behind him. Turning to look at it, he asked, "Who is there?"

No one showed up, so he said again, "If you won't come out, I will break all the beer bottles at the bottom of the tree and put it on fire."

Hearing it, someone peaked out from the tree and looked at Lu Feng. Clearing his eyes to see who was there, he said in his drunk voice. "Come out."

A teenage girl came out who was wearing a school uniform. It seemed like she was a high school student around the age of seventeen or eighteen.

She looked scared to see drunk Lu Feng and said, "I-I am sorry. I didn't mean to disturb you. I will leave." 1

Bowing down a little, as she was about to leave, Lu Feng called her. "Hey Kid, stop there."
