"Say thank you to the miss," the stunt girl said.
Mei Han went back to their car to grab a flask for Xueyan. "Mr Du here, had ordered this earlier. Eat them."
Xueyan didn't know why her stomach was growling so much, so she happily munched on the food.
It was ten o'clock in the night. She picked up her phone and dialled Yuxi's number.
It took the first ring to connect. "h.e.l.lo Xueyan,"
"How are you?"
"I'm fine. And you? I hope it's not too cold out there? Have you had anything to eat?" Yuxi worriedly asked.
"I'm okay." Xueyan smiled. "Eaten as well. How's Ran'er? What of dad and mum?"
"Qingran got a fever and cried all evening. It's not been long she went to bed after mom sang lullabies for her."
"A fever? How come?" Xueyan panicked. "She had been fine this morning. Energetic and playful... How come she is running a fever?"
"No. The fever is gone now. She's alright now and sleeping with mom." Yuxi said. "She's okay now, worry less." Yuxi convinced. "Dad and mom are doing just great. Dad, is complaining of eating all day... Says he wants to work."
Xueyan closed her eyes to take a deep breath.
"A good idea, he has to wait though. I will call in the morning time to be able to speak to Ran'er."
"Ok, bye."
"Is there trouble at home?" The voice startled Xueyan. She turned and discovered it was Xiujun with two cups of piping hot tea in his hands. He pa.s.sed her one and sipped on the other.
Xueyan shook her head. "It's nothing to worry about." That was a lie, she was just pretending. There's nothing that worried her more than Ran'er getting sick because her baby girl rarely did. "Everything is fine."
Xiujun was the one to shook his head this time. "It doesn't seem like it," he took a step forward. Shortening the distance between them. "Tell me," he used two fingers to lift Xueyan's jaw. "Is everything alright?"
"My baby had a fever,"
"Oh!" Xiujun smiled. "Bet she's okay, now. So you have to worry less. It won't be good to the ear, if your baby got a fever and you get one by worrying for her too much." He arched a brow. "Think about it, she will worry about you too if you got one, away from home." He smiled, then wiped Xueyan's cheek.
Wiping a dramatic tear... Xueyan started giggling.
"I wasn't crying,"
"Oh, you weren't? I thought I had seen tears cascading down."
Xueyan shook her head and giggled. "You must have eyes issues."
Xiujun blinked thrice. "No way! My eyes are perfectly fine." He used his free hand to pull up his lashes. "Look,"
Xueyan continued giggling.
"That's more like it. Laugh all the time. It's good for the health." He then pointed at himself. "Have you seen me smile? My dimples appear when I do that." He then poked his cheek. "Where's it?" He tried to twist his cheeks to make the so called dimples appear and it made Xueyan laugh more.
He raised his cup to sip, he wasn't sipping, he was watching her. It made him smile seeing her laugh heartily.
He remembered the sensation that ran through his fingers when he wiped the dramatic tears. She was so warm, and tender. Bai Xueyan... He had some questions to ask. But no, it wasn't now.
He shook his head and the tea dropped on his jaw, "Ouch." He immediately searched for his hanky and wiped his jaw.
"What is wrong?" Xueyan pulled his hand holding his jaw. "You've scalded your jaw," worry marred her face. "It will leave bruises if you rub it any further," Xueyan hurried to go get penicillin.
Watching her strode away made him smile too and then it turned sour when he saw his manager heading towards him.
He looked away, not wanting to look more. He knew he was in for a scolding.
"What in the name of Christ did you do?" Jingtang said when he was seven foot away. "You burnt your self. It's bad that if you're left to be by yourself a minute, you cause harm to yourself that will take ages to heal." Jingtang swallowed. "Someone get an ointment!" He yelled. "The President wants to see you, we're leaving." Jingtang watched Xiujun scowl. "Save that for him."
"I'm not going and that's final!" Xiujun declared. He saw Xueyan heading towards them and smiled.
She got close and with shaky fingers opened the penicillin to apply.
"What's this?" Jingtang s.n.a.t.c.hed it. "You can't apply this on his face. He's a celebrity for crying out loud. Do you want to harm him more?"
Mei Han that stood behind Xueyan frowned. "What do you mean?" She s.n.a.t.c.hed it back. "And my Xue isn't? She ran with this heavy clothing to go get this!" She pointed it at Jingtang.
"A celebrity my..." Jingtang paused when he saw the look on Xiujun's face.
"It's nothing to argue about." Xueyan weighed in. "It will only get worse if we don't apply it now..."
"Ointments are better!" Jingtang cut in sharply. "Look someone's coming with one." He pointed at a female worker coming forward.
Xiujun grabbed Xueyan's hand. "Apply it on me." He saw Xueyan wasn't going to do it and sulked. "It's actually hurting a lot. Please,"
Jingtang mouth dropped. Why is he putting on an act?
Five minutes later, Xiujun was set to leave the shooting location. "It's so late at night, why not just stay?"
"Well he can't!" Jingtang answered. "It's so cold out here! And again, staying here would cause him more harm than being on that road alone."
Xueyan pouted and said nothing more.
"Be careful," the director warned.
"Sure," Jingtang was the one that replied.
"Bye," Xiujun said. He took a step toward her, pulled his blazer and draped it over her. He smiled with satisfaction after seeing her. "It's really cold out here! Take care."
"You take care too," Xueyan was shocked with his action and only shouted back when she recovered.
*
The car drove out of the mountain road alone, but once they were out of sight. Three cars followed them, one at the front and two behind.
Xiujun rolled his eyes. "Now what is all these?"
"You're being so nice these days that I wonder why you changed so much!" Jingtang replied.
"That isn't the answer to my question!"
"Ask the President when you see him. And why did you give her your blazer?"
"Mind your business! Next time you say something harsh to her, I'll make sure the President punishes you!"
Jingtang looked back since he was seated in the front. A big frown on his face. That threat might be easy to the ear, but it was really a harsh one. It made his heart ache. The young man was looking out the window.
Many people didn't know this young man, but he did. He turned to face the front. "I'm sorry." His voice gentle unlike his usual professional tone.
He wouldn't want to be punished again.
The Young Master had started acting since he was five. He remembered vividly. The day he stepped on his foot in the studio, he hadn't cried, and said it was okay, then told the President another thing. Clearly opposite as the President had sent people to go fetch his parents. He didn't know why the President will do that until after waiting a whole day at home for his parents and they didn't return. He cried and ran to the president and told them his parents were missing, he only laughed and said. "I took them. That's the punishment you receive for hurting Xiujun. Anytime you hurt him, your parents will disappear for two weeks. Imagine the torture they will go through."
He was only seven, he couldn't imagine the worst until they returned after one week. His mother's hair was in a mess, eye bags under her s.h.i.+ning eyes. She was crying but didn't want him to see it. His father worst. The man's body ached all over. The doctor had come over and left a nurse to care for his parents.
He hurt Xiujun again, two more times and had his parents pay all the time until he was eighteen, more matured and careful. He didn't act with haste. Because any little mistake meant his parents will be tortured. He didn't want that again.
He heaved deeply. Never again! Xiujun declared their friends.h.i.+p on his tenth birthday. He gained more enemies in school. And then bully came forth. Locked in the cla.s.sroom after school, beaten and abandoned in the school field during break time. His food would be taken away too, if Xiujun wasn't there with him.
It got hard to climb the school staircase because his ribcage was hurting a lot. He was been bullied but didn't tell anyone. Until the day Xiujun found him almost unconscious in the school canteen.
He cried. Yes, that was the first time he had seen Xiujun cry. Cried with tears flowing down unlike the fake tears he shows the President.
It took him two months to recover. Xiujun didn't go to school, he had been shocked senseless when he heard it. Didn't go to school and always stayed with him.
When they got back to school. It was Monday morning and everyone on the a.s.sembly ground when they arrived. Xiujun climbed the podium, took the mic from the princ.i.p.al and called out names. The names he had asked for when he recovered. Xiujun punished everyone of them and even the canteen workers, saying they knew what was going on and turned a blind eye.
It was after that, that he started taking care of Xiujun genuinely.
Back to the present.
The gates opened to them and the Butler welcomed them. The servants lined up to greet Xiujun, no one knew his background. Only the chairman, director and producers. They knew best not to mess with him.
Jingtang looked round the house, he had come here a lot. But still his mouth dropped when he stood inside the extravagant hou...home.
Xiujun waved the servants off and strutted into the house library.
"Yes?" Not even a good evening. "You just returned and already asking to see me." He plopped down on the chair. "How much fun did you have with your mistresses? Has anyone decided to give you an heir?" He smirked.
The man stood facing the window smirked. "You're so jealous and always praying I don't have another son." He turned to face Xiujun, a cigar in between his index and long finger. "Why? You want to have everything to yourself." He sat on the bronze coloured chair. "How are you?"
Xiujun stood up and went to the bar.
