Slamming the newspapers on the table, Liam pulled the chair back and slammed his body into it. We were sitting in the cafeteria as a group. It had been two days since I found my mother's dead body. Two days of stares. Two days of media coverage. Two days of torture.

Mikey grabbed one of the newspapers and read the headline, "Dead body found in home," He turned the paper around as it showed a picture of my home, "There's a picture of you and your brother!"

Looking up, I s.n.a.t.c.hed the paper out of his hands and stared at the two photos. First, there was a picture of me. I didn't have a smile on my face at all. I stared directly into the camera as my long black hair flowed to my shoulders. There were a few words underneath the picture that read "Pictured above is Marie's eldest daughter, Carter (18) who is currently a student at Zims Academy," then I went to the picture of my brother. He smiled at the camera and I squinted my eyes because we looked absolutely nothing alike. Compared to my heavenly brown skin, my brother had the tannest skin. He stared at the camera with his big brown eyes and held the biggest smile on his face.

Where was he?

I stared at the words underneath his picture before reading it out loud, "Corey (16) who relocated two years ago," I placed the newspaper down and rolled my eyes as I could see two girls walk by and whispering while staring at me.

"Read this," Melanie whispered as she slid the paper over to me. Picking it up, my eyes widened at the photo of all of us on the front cover of Zims News. My mom's blood covered my uniform as Mikey, Melanie, Sarah, Liam, Dillion, Kimberly and Kasey stood next to me. I scoffed as I read the headline. In big bold letters read, "Zims Newest Heroes?"

"Who leaked it to the press?" Kasey asked.

"We were there when the press came so it cannot be considered leaked," Mikey sa.s.sed.

"They didn't know we were a team though,"

"Who cares?" Sarah groaned, "It has been published which means that it is out!"

"I think that should be the least of our worries! There's a curfew! There's a murderer out there!" Dillion growled. Everyone at the table sat in silence as we listened to him. He was right. I could hear someone clearing their throat. I looked up to see Bob standing behind Mikey.

"With the news being out, you 8 could not possibly attend cla.s.ses with the rest of the students so I'll be teaching you everything," He said.

"Why not leave us with everyone else?" Mikey asked.

"Because everyone else isn't apart of this group," He replied and started to walk towards the exit. We grabbed our trays off the table and tossed them into the trash before following behind him. Everyone watched us. It was awkward and uncomfortable.

"Why them?"

"What's so special about them?"

"They aren't heroes!"

Ignoring everything, we entered Bob's office and closed the door behind us. Bob marched over to his desk before leaning against it while crossing his big arms across his chest. He smiled softly at us and spoke, "You've obviously been learning how to use your powers since you're all 18 but you need to figure out how strong those powers of yours actually are!"

He stepped forward, "Let's start with Liam! You're fast! You're so fast that it seems like everything around you freezes,"

Liam smiled proudly as Bob patted him on his shoulder. He walked over to Sarah next, "You can control electricity but I need for you to learn how to control electricity without running out of energy! We will figure out how we can fix that,"

"I don't think that's something that can be fixed,"

"Anything could be fixed!" Bob said as he stopped in front of Mikey, "We have you who can shoot lasers out of those hands! We need to work on extending your lasers and using them for a long period of time,"

"I do that," Mikey mumbled.

"You shoot them out and they fly out like bullets but you need to learn how to shoot them out but it never stops! It stops when you decide to stop it!"

Mikey stared at Bob for a minute and nodded his head. Bob smiled and stopped in front of Melanie, "You know how to teleport from one place to another but you've never teleported with people and that is something that you need to learn," He pa.s.sed Melanie and walked over to Kimberly, "You're good! You know how to freeze things but you need to learn how to freeze things into a big block of ice! You just shoot out ice but I think your abilities are actually quite strong but you're holding back!" He smiled and stopped in front of Kasey, "You're pretty strong and well off. I will give a round of applause to John Porter and the rest of the family for training you since you were a young girl! You're terrific at feeling danger but I think you should work on your invisibility too! It takes you time to disappear,"

Dillion stared at Bob as he smiled at him, "You have the ability to control minds! You can get people to do anything you'd want them to do yet you don't use your powers! I think it's time that you get comfortable and use them,"

I looked away as Bob stood in front of me. He stared for a minute before opening his mouth to speak, "There's a lot to you, Carter. I am sorry for your loss but you're powerful! You have the ability to control the weather but there's so much more to you especially from where you come from! I want you to explore your powers,"

I squinted my eyes, "You know where I come from?"

"I don't know where exactly you come from but I do know that you are not like most mutants yet there's nothing dangerous about you. If so, Kasey would've felt it!" He responded.

"He's right," Kasey whispered.

Bob slapped his hands together, "I recommend you all going to your rooms and getting plenty of rest! We will begin our training tomorrow in the fields!"

Nodding our heads, we each exited the room. Standing outside of the door, Mikey turned his head to everyone else. "It's too early for us to go to bed!"

"There's a curfew though," Dillion explained.

"Lets sneak out!" Mikey suggested.

"That's impossible! We've be in so much trouble!" Melanie spoke.

"They needs us! It won't be that bad! We're mutants! Sneaking in and out of places should be the easiest thing!" Mikey replied.

Liam leaned off against the wall and walked towards Mikey, "I'm down plus I want to know more about Carter!"

"More about her? For what?" Sarah asked. It almost felt as if Sarah was defending me as if she was trying to hide something.

"We need to know what the h.e.l.l she is because it's nothing normal!" Liam growled before storming away.

"He's talking about normal as if it isn't a mutant," Kasey mumbled before following behind him.

An hour later, we had snuck out of the school and were now standing in front of the large gates the separated Zims from the rest of the world.

"Are you sure we are ready for this?" Melanie whispered. She had been complaining the entire way here but everyone ignored her. I could tell she was scared. We still wore our uniforms which was a dumb idea but it was too late to turn back.

"You have complained the entire time!" Liam started, "If you're that scared then go back!"

"But you better not say anything about the rest of us!" Mikey finished, "I cannot get into anymore trouble especially with my mom!"

Melanie sighed heavily but continued to walk with the rest of us. Dillion stared st the gate and sighed heavily, "We're stuck! There's no way we'd be able to get out! These gates are controlled by the mayor of Zims!"

"Carter could break it like she did at the gates to the academy!" Kasey suggested.

"They'd know who did it then,"

"Or someone could just fly over to the other side," Mikey said. Kasey smacked him in the head as he groaned.

"No one here knows how to fly,"

You'd be surprised.

"Melanie can always teleport us to the other side," Sarah said.

Melanie's eyes widened as she shook her head, "I have never teleported a group of people!"

"It's time you learn!" Mikey exclaimed while taking her hand and slowly pulling her towards everyone else. Melanie sighed.

"I need everyone to grab my arm,"

"Do not send us to Jupiter!" Liam warned.

"Woohoo!" Someone called out. Freezing, we slowly turned our heads to the outside of the gate to see Kasey standing there with her hands on her hip.

"How did you do that?" Dillion asked.

"She turned herself invisible and walked through the gate," I spoke.

Kasey stared at me before shaking her head, "How did you know I could walk through things?"

I turned my head and quickly changed the subject, "Get is to the other side!"

Melanie nodded and squeezed her eyes shut. Everyone began to argue over what to do. I couldn't tell what was happening or what was being said then all of sudden, we appeared in a different place.

I looked around to see us sitting in a empty restaurant. There was no one inside not even a waiter. Quickly, Mikey ran to the front door and opened it as the bell rang signaling a customer had arrived. He ran back to the seat and sat down. On cue, a woman walked out wearing a white b.u.t.ton up s.h.i.+rt with a ap.r.o.n tied around her waist. She smiled softly and greeted us, "What would you guys like to drink?"

"You could just get us all a water," Sarah replied. She nodded her head before walking back into the kitchen.

"Are you gonna tell us what you are now?" Liam asked me.

"I'm a mutant," I responded. Kasey kissed her teeth.

"Tell the truth," Liam growled.

When did he become an a.s.shole?

"You wouldn't believe me," I mumbled.

"You don't know that," Mikey replied.

I sighed heavily as I looked at Sarah who sat there in silence. I cleared my throat and began to speak, "I am from the future,"

Silence.

"I returned to fix things so the terrible events happening in the future wouldn't happen but it's going to happen anyway,"

"She's telling the truth and I know this because of these visions that I get at night," Sarah started, "I see me standing over a bed and watching a girl who looks exactly like Carter except she has red hair and there's a guy sitting besides her with both of his hands on each side of her head as if he's doing something with her mind!

Well then.

This is news to me.

"What is going to happen in the future?" Melanie asked.

"I cannot quite say what it is but it's something that is coming and it is something that we have been warned about! I'm still confused on a lot of things! Everyone at this table is in the future except for Melanie,"

"Why am I not there?" She asked.

The waitress exited from the kitchen and sat our waters down on the table. We smiled softly at her as she made her way back to the kitchen with an odd look on her face.

I shrugged, "I met everyone at Martial Academy which is Zims Academy in the future except it is 2019 there and we are still students!"

"The dates are either incorrect or something happened that made us not remember one another," Sarah explained.

"How is this possible?" Liam whispered.

"We lost our memories someway and I am here to figure it all out. In the meantime, lets all be careful!" I finished.

"That's how you knew to go to your mom's home?" Melanie asked as I nodded.

"Enough of this talk! We are out so let's go explore a bit of New York!" Kasey suggested.

"Who is gonna pay for these waters?" Dillion asked.

"I thought they were free?" Mikey asked.

"Nothing in this world is free," Sarah replied.

"Let me see how much it'll be," Mikey mumbled as he grabbed the menu and looked at the prices.

"It's $2," Dillion called out.

Dropping the menu, Mikey exclaimed, "$2 for some water? Jesus have better walked on that water!"

"I didn't bring any money," Melanie whispered.

"I didn't either,"

"Kasey can pay for it!" Mikey suggested. We looked around only to see Kasey had left.

"Kasey? Kasey?" Mikey called out, "That invisible bit-"

"Lets just run!" Liam suggested.

"Good idea,"

Dillion ended up paying for it. We left the restaurant and Kasey was already on the outside which resulted into an argument between her and Mikey. We walked around New York for a bit and I enjoyed every minute of it.

"If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friend!" I sung as we walked inside of the academy. There weren't many people out and the few that were seemed to be studying.

"What song is that?" Mikey asked.

"Wannabe by The Spice Girls," I replied.

"Who the h.e.l.l?" Mikey asked and I gasped.

"It's not out yet!" I corrected, "You'll hear it on radio stations in about 3 more years,"

"In 1996! I'll remember that!" Mikey yelled as he headed up the stairs, "See you losers tomorrow!"

We all said our goodbyes and headed to our rooms to call it a night. Sarah and I laughed at our day as we closed the door to our room and prepared for bed. As soon as I was about to head to the shower, a knock on the door caught my attention.

"Come in," Sarah called out.

Immediately, Liam and Melanie marched in. Melanie ran over towards the television and pressed the on b.u.t.ton. I tossed my pajamas on the bed and focused on them.

"What's going on?" Sarah asked.

"This!" Liam exclaimed.

On the television was a video of us teleporting into the restaurant. It was camera footage.

"Turn the television up," I whispered. Melanie turned the television up as I listened to the news reporter report on the video.

"This video footage is from Constance's which is a local restaurant here in New York. Earlier tonight, the police received video footage of what appears to be a group of people appearing out of nowhere! We are all well aware of the existence of a certain kind called mutants. Mutants have been heroes to many of us! Showcasing extraordinary powers and saving many people on a daily basis but rules are rules On March 7th 1990, a law was pa.s.sed where mutation became illegal. Mutants are not allowed to use their powers anywhere except for the city of Zims which is a small city located deep in the woods of New York," The reporter explained.

I watched as the video footage of us teleporting into the restaurant replayed over and over. It even showed where Mikey opened the door and pretended that we had walked in. I gasped as I read the headline: BREAKING NEWS! ILLEGAL MUTANTS SPOTTED IN NEW YORK!

Sarah grabbed the remote and shut the television off. I turned my head slowly and stared at her with wide eyes and she stared at me with the same expression, "We are in so much trouble,"
