Education isn't limited to the four walls of a learning inst.i.tution, or to the contents of a book or to the length and breadth of the internet. This I have finally come to terms with after providence granted me the opportunity to travel to specific places in the world.
I will never forget what I learnt when I travelled to Dubai for the first time in 2010. I learnt about the Bedouin warriors, I discovered how a people survived the hot and harsh weather conditions of the Arabian gulf in the days when there was no such thing as an air conditioning system or a refrigerator, and yet built a city that has become a sight to marvel at in the course of history. The first thing that got me attracted to the city was its cosmopolitan nature, it was as if every national in the world is represented in the city, I learnt a lot about different cultures just by asking questions from different people I came in contact with. I met very warm and friendly people in the process. One thing I took away from that trip was nothing can stop anyone with the determination and will power to achieve something, not the desert, not a harsh weather, not band raiders, not lack of rainfall. What can stop you is YOU! What a vital lesson! This lesson has since become apart of me ever since.
Education is a very vast topic. Over the years, different people have tried to downplay the importance of formal education acquired in colleges and schools trying to say it's one of the tools of capitalism to exploit and enslave people generally, but I am of the opinion that anyone can write anything but what is important is the fact. Daily, we see the importance of formal education by its products, how else can you judge a process other than the result it produces?
Formal education continues to stand head above shoulder over any other form of education in the world for now. But most importantly, formal education has evolved from the traditional type, to the industry age type, to the information age type. The information age type of education has been the most beneficial in that it has a global inclination such that a child can travel all over the world from a computer system. The child can watch videos, see pictures of places in a country he or she has never been to. This has made education more interesting and informative, also it has reinforced the need for the child to travel to places so as to know more about what is being taught in the cla.s.sroom.
For this reason, many schools and colleges arrange travels and tours for students to see first-hand what was taught in the cla.s.sroom and most often than not they have benefitted immensely from such expeditions, especially where they delved into the history of some places.
History as a subject has always been an interesting aspect of education, it brings back the past especially as it relates with monuments and historical sites. This is the point at which what was taught in the cla.s.sroom has to be translated to reality, this makes travelling very relevant. In it all the importance of travelling in education has been underlined with the number of people that troop to pilgrimage sites across the world to see what they have read in religious books, archaeologist haven't been left out too, they go all over the world to study human history, in search of facts and evidences. All of these continue to drive home the importance of travelling in education. It is in fact a form of education, it teaches you about the culture, tradition and belief systems of other races in the world.
There's a lot to learn when you travel around the world. Some cultures teach you more about etiquette, some teach you further about manufacturing, some celebrate foods and wines, some teach you about the essence of fas.h.i.+on, some remind you of the greatness of the long gone empires, some teach you about natural medicine, some teach about the resilience of its people, others teach you about the warmth and kindness of their people. Somany things to learn in the process.
I can hear some people already talking about affordability, oh yes, that plays a very vital role but travelling for the purpose of education isn't restricted to a world wide sojourn. At the last count there were more than 250 tribes or more in Nigeria divided along 774 local government areas. There are 10 famous tribes in South Africa, there are 645 district tribes in India, and there are 562 federally recognized Indian tribes in the United States of America. This simply means wherever you come from or you live, there's a lot to learn around you from people you live together in the same country. Travel to these places, know more about them, their cultural history and heritage sites. In Nigeria for example, there are over 70 recognized tourist sites. And there are reports
that over 430 tourist sites remain underdeveloped or untouched altogether. You can travel to these places, free your soul, get to know about people you never knew of, widen your horizon the best way you can.
Have you noticed something about well-travelled people? They tend to be tolerant, accommodating and most importantly intelligent. Their level of intelligence is often exceptional. They seem to know a lot about most things. Even for the ones that do not have formal education, there will be one or two things to learn about the way they dress and relate with people.
If there's one major thing that travelling teaches beyond the monuments and historical sites, it is the ability to relate with people effectively. Everyrace or tribe has a peculiar way of relating with people, they have special ways they greet and they also have ways they show hospitality. For this reason, someone can learn how to relate with customers and clients without formal education as a result of relating with some people overtime, either by living with them or trading with them for a period of time.

All in all, the role of travelling in the process of learning in life is very vital, there's this liberty it brings. It liberates one's mind, and then you will realize you don't know many things, or you have wrong information about several things. That's why when someone seems to only reason from a particular prism of thoughts, such an individual is referred to as unexposed. What this simply means is after you must have acquired formal education, it is required of you to explore, to travel to places and learn more about how things are done differently from what your culture has taught you, go around knowing more about others.
What this does is to let you know your tribe or race isn't the best in the world. It is actually a humbling experience. I am of the opinion now and always that if there's a vital aspect of education you can't afford to neglect it is the knowledge travelling gives you.
