I was stopped from entering the solitary observation ward as I was stopped by the doctors and nurses as they were evaluating the condition of Akira's extent of losing her memories due to the accident as well as the brain inactivity for several months. The nurses at the station rea.s.sured me that they will update me as soon as the tests had been concluded.

I soon learnt about the process of how Akira began to regain the consciousness that pulled her out from the coma. It was sometime later when I had left after my usual morning visit and rantings on Akira. As after I had sung a song for her I had placed the guitar leaning against the bed as usual.

A female janitor came in to clean the bathroom and perform general cleaning in the solitary ward. As she was doing her activities, her dust mop accidentally knocked the guitar and it toppled to the floor with a rather loud cras.h.!.+

She heard an audible groan coming from the bed and saw Akira had opened her mouth to slightly groan and wrinkled her eyebrows. The first few sentences she heard was, "Urrgh... What's that noise all about?! Let me sleep some more... "

The female janitor quickly pressed the call bell b.u.t.ton and several nurses came in and fussed around Akira. She had managed to flutter her eyelids open and adjusted to the bright sunlight that had peered into the solitary ward.

The first thing she asked was where she was and what is she doing in bed... She had recollection at all about how she ended in bed and doesn't remember the date.

It took some time for the doctors to run several evaluations before they could come up with a prognosis to Akira's condition. As she had just awakened, most of any reflective materials inside the ward had been prior removed. Even the windows had been much earlier replaced with non-frosted gla.s.s.

Akira's aunt came by a while later for her visitation when she heard about Akira's awakening from the coma and she was allowed in as she was regarded as Akira's 'significant others' besides me known as a 'very close friend'. Hospital policy still has to follow its rules and regulation, at last.

After a while, Akira's aunt asked for me. Before entering she told me that Akira had amnesia and may not remember parts and pieces of her past incident as well as having vague memories such as me. Her last memory was pushed as far back as March or February of 1995.

I remembered I had entered s.h.i.+ro's life in September of 95 and only had been with Akira for 6 months back so cutting back the months it would be somewhere in March.

"Let me hope for the best..." I thought to myself as I stepped into the room, like as if it's the very first time.

Akira was propped up on the bed, her ECG machine had been unhooked while her saline and glucose intravenous drip was still attached to the crock of her left arm. She looked a bit weary and her aunt was sitting on a chair beside her while a team of doctors and some nurses were standing by to record notes and follow up with their prognosis.

I simply was tight-lipped and not sure what to say when I stepped in and stood at the foot of the bed. I bowed slightly and looked at her face. My eyes were reddening as I am struggling to contain all the emotions inside me.

"Aunt...who is that boy standing there? He was wearing our school uniform with the emblem... It is still school hours right...? Why is the boy here and what does he want...?"

Her aunt turned around slowly and looked at me and averted her gaze not to look at me directly when she stood up and bowed deeply to me with one hand on her chest as if she wanted to tell me something apologetically...

I was dumbfounded! Akira doesn't remember me at all! The suppressed feelings that I was holding back resurfaced with such a force that I had to hold on to the foot of the bed and steady my quivering shoulders as torrents of tears suddenly fell and dripped down my face like a leaking faucet.

I audibly gasped as I was trying to catch my breath amongst my uncontrollable sobbings. A nurse came beside me immediately and placed her tender arm on my shoulder to steady my nerves and I can't see what's in front of me as my hot tears kept flowing down and streaked my face and dribbled down my chin.

"A... Akira... Don't you remember me? I... I'm s.h.i.+ro and my cla.s.s was beside yours... You are one of the uprising swimmers in your swim club and me... I'm the captain for the futsal team for Asahigaoka. We b.u.mped into each other in front of Yask.a.w.kun at our school's front when they first install it there... "

I held in and find it hard to mention to Akira when she had lain in bed with no reactions at all for these months and when she finally regains her consciousness, it's like a whole new restart all over again.

"I am sorry s.h.i.+ro-kun... I can't place a finger about your name and yourself at all... Maybe you can tell me why I was in the hospital? And why are you shedding those tears so badly?"

She c.o.c.ked her eyebrows as she eyed me from top to bottom and truly doesn't remember the boy who had spent the last few months in hospital accompanying her even though she didn't response to any deed he had done at all. Of course, s.h.i.+ro doesn't mind it a bit because whatever he does, it all depends on G.o.d will and blessing.

"Akira... I... I... What the h.e.l.l...!"

I wiped my face with the back of my sleeve. I went over to the guitar, picked it up and tuned it a bit after plucking on its strings... I strummed on it and picked the right chords and cleared my throat before I begin.....

Can you lay your life down,

So a stranger can live,

Can you take what you need,

But take less than you give.

Could you close every day,

Without the glory and fame,

Could you hold your head high,

When no one knows your name.

That's how legends are made,

At least that's what they say,

We say goodbye,

But never let go.

We'll live, we die,

Cause you can't save every soul,

Gotta take every chance to show,

That I'm the kinda man,

Who will never look back,

Never look down,

And never let go,

Can you lose everything,

You ever had planned,

Can you sit down again,

And play another hand,

Can you risk everything,

For the chance to be alone again?

Under pressure find the grace,

Or would you come undone,

That's how legends are made,

At least that's what they say,

We say goodbye,

But never let go.

After I finished strumming and singing the song, all the nurses were present and their faces were wet; all of them were clasping their hands over their chest. Some of them even repeated the sentence, "Never Let Go" as though they were giving me the encouragement to never let go of what I had been trying so hard for the past few months. They all have high hopes for this young man.

Akira's aunt who was standing at the side of the bed bowed deeply to me and thanked me. Her face too was wet with tears.

"Akira... This is s.h.i.+ro-kun and he had been looking after you every single day since you are here. He even skipped school for the first few days. The Princ.i.p.al and Vice-Princ.i.p.al came here too at that time. He comes in every day before he leaves for school and comes directly here after school skipping his ECA altogether. From what the nurses had told me; he would talk to you, sing for you, joke with you, tell stories of what's happening during the weekend and would even make silly faces on your face; pulling your nose and cheeks and so on. He treats you just like as if you awake like right now."

Akira was a bit teary and was blus.h.i.+ng but she bowed slightly to me while being cropped up in bed with her blanket covering her legs. She understood everything her aunt was telling right up to the fact when she mentioned that I had pulled her ears, nose and cheeks to make fun of herself...

Her eyes looked in horror as if I had tried to pull or touch somewhere else and she subconsciously looked underneath her hospital blouse to look for something or anything questionable...
