As his eyes looked to the balcony he saw two additional teens conversing. Seeing the youth with dreads he thought for a second he was seeing things. Sensing his gaze the youth smiled before slowly walking over...

" Aah brother Malnor..., what are you doing here?"

Taf greeted as though he had just seen an old friend. As he spoke he gave Malnor a pat on his shoulders, though in his mind he was cursing his luck.

" d.a.m.n it, how the h.e.l.l am i going to get myself out of this one? Guess I should perhaps come clean." He lamented..

"Seems May was right, after all. I can just imagine how thrilled she is.."

As he spoke to the side of his eyes. he saw May struggle not to burst out in laughter. She did tell him his method was flawed, only putting a band-aid over the problem.

Sooner or later it would be revealed he was lying through his teeth. She had to admit there was an exhilarating feeling winning against this fellow from time to time. It was as though the air became a bit more soothing...

" It is I that should be asking this question. After our drink 1 , you disclosed you were given a mission, but I was under the impression it would be a minor one intended for beginners.

Don't tell me this is what you spoke of? Has the sect lost its mind putting a young innocent soul such as yourself in harm's way? Is this the way that we treat our  juniors with great prospects for the future?"

Malnor uttered as he was befuddled by what was occurring. How could the sect do such a thing?

This poor fellow who couldn't imagine killing a fly, being placed on a mission that would be filled with blood. He was so innocent, naive and filled with optimism?

He recalled his speech that tugged at his heartstrings as he so boldly spoke before the crowd. This was a child untainted by the world. To be honest, Malnor even thought that such a being might not even be suited for the cultivation world.

Hearing his words the members of Squad Malgrey nearly fell to the floor. Lovren even spat out the beverage content he had in his mouth...

" Young innocent soul in harm's way, Taf? Does he perhaps have a clone of himself hidden away somewhere righting his wrongs?

If this is the case, it would be quite an exhausted one. His previous enemies would beg to differ with Malnor's sentiments. They would certainly weep after hearing his blasphemous claims."

Neisha thought as she couldn't help but chuckle in her mind wondering how Malnor came to this a.s.sumption. In fact, they all wondered how the two even knew each other in the first place.

Both May and Taf have only been in the sect a mere week. Yet, here was Taf seemingly a part of a brotherhood...

Taf could not help but look on embarra.s.singly. By the response of Malnor, he could tell this fellow really was enraged and worried. In some ways, he did feel a bit of guilt for his previous act. As he readied himself for a reply the door once more open...

"Brother Malnor we will talk after this briefing, how about it?" Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click for visiting.

He uttered as he saw the arrival of a new party to which Malnor nodded but he definitely would try to correct this wrong.

" So everyone has arrived. I hope my city has been all that you hoped. If it had been different circ.u.mstances under which we had met, I might even disclose the best attractions that it provides. Alas, it is what it is, right? I am City Lord Jimenez."

A 9th stage middle-aged man with tinges of grey in his dark hair greeted. He was joined by an entourage of official-looking personnel. He then went over to where the squads were as he shook the hands of the squad leaders, who then introduced their squads.

"Ahh, the female phenom, squad leader Ava. I have heard about you escapades in the past, your track record is quite impressive, having a 92% success rate for missions undertaken.

Then there is you, squad leader Malnor. A veteran to which the sect holds in such high esteem, having a success rate of 94%..

Mr. Malgrey I will of course not forget your squad. It is said on average you have one of the youngest squads, having quite the potential for the future.

I have faith in the sect's decision in having you join us and I must say i am looking forward to great things indeed."

It could be said this fellow knew the means by which to work a room, as he shook their hands he regaled their previous feats. In a manner of seconds, he gave everyone a good impression of himself.

If flowery words could form a garden, his would flourish for eons...

" A true politician, no wonder he has the position he does.." Taf thought as he watched from the sideline.

Within the midst of the s.p.a.cious room, there was a grand table suited for seating a large group. It seems its previous use was for meetings of the city's official.

" Please have a seat.."

He offered as he was the first to take a seat at the head chair. Following his lead, all within the room became seated..

" Now, I am aware all squads were given a slight briefing of the situation. However, allow my advisor Kathy to provide you with the additional information required..."

Of his officials, a woman stood up as she addressed all that sat at the table...

" Our city has always faced threats of bandits. However, we have had the capabilities to handle the threat through the means at our disposal in the past.

Nonetheless, as of late there has been a change somewhat in the level of threat faced. These new bandits are unlike the ones from the past. They have training, discipline and more uniformed in their attacks.

It should also be noted for some reason attacks have been made systematically on important caravans and merchants. Some of our officials have also been abducted and killed.

There have been clues this is proceeded with them being tortured and mutilated for information.  Attempts have also been made at tainting the city's water supply and cutting off ground and other food provisions..."

Hearing the woman's word there were some odd gazes after the information was read...

" Pardon me for interrupting, but this is not within the normal behavioral patterns of regular bandits.

You stated they were systematically attacking points and has some form of training. From all indications, this is a mercenary group for hire. Have there been any clues as to which it is? A symbol or emblem of any kind? 2  "

Ava wore a serious expression as she tried to decipher the meaning behind it all. Being one that has had her fair share of missions, she could always tell when something was off.

" I also have a concern, You stated that attempts were made at poisoning the water supply etc. This too seems odd, as this in itself is an act of terrorism.

Has there been any threat or demand of any kind...' Malnor interjected before continuing.

Lastly, you also disclosed officials have been tortured and mutilated. Has this occurrence been in the city or when the victims ventured outside? "

???

" Providing some answer to your questions.  So far there has been no information on any such symbols and there have been no demands.  As it pertains to the death of officials...

*Cough...*

The woman choked up a bit after saying the last few words...

" It's ok, take your time Kathy. We all are heartbroken by the loss of the two.."

A few comforting words were uttered by the city lord as he saw his advisor struggling to say the words...

" Sorry for my hiccup, the two were attacked while conducting business on the city's behalf.

They were strung up outside of the city walls and there were no witnesses that saw the act. Autopsies of the bodies showed signs they had been tortured for hours."

The room became silent as Kathy disclosed the details...

To be continued... The drink mention by Malnor was from chapter 118 Wrecked Habitat. This was offered by Malnor to which Taf agreed Mercenaries groups had symbols or emblem for representation. It was a means of advertising for their future clients
