Aldren left a while ago as he was much busier than the girls which only left Ann, yet again, alone, or so she thought. Just as she was about to lay on her sofa and take a short nap, loud and deafening alarms reverberated across the whole clinic, startling the female doctor.
She directed her gaze toward the source of the noise, which was actually Bin's room. Red and unsettling lights kept going on and off in the laboratory, indicating that there was an intruder.
Although it looked like an unguarded and unkempt place, this clinic is equipped with the latest technology and is more than capable of defending against invaders.
Where Bin was resting current was a holy room for Ann as most of her secrets and experiment results are hidden there. Only she is allowed to enter it and no one else so when the system detected an intruder, it sounded the alarm instantaneously.
Unfortunately, the intruder wasn't a weakling, she dodged the several traps shot at her but still wasn't able to resist a very strong sleeping gas which filled the room within the second.
When the cloaked intruder became drowsy and her body weakened, three syringes were shot at her, hitting her back and shoulder, causing her to fall unconscious within seconds.
When the room cleared, Ann, who was angry and startled by the intruder, wanted to take a good look at her only for her hand to reach nothing but air as the motionless body exploded into a black mist which widened the distance between them.
"Who are you!"
Prepared for a similar outcome, Ann glued herself to the wall and hit a hidden b.u.t.ton, locking the whole room, rendering the cloaked female unable to take a step out of this place.
To begin with, the intruder bore no hostile feelings toward Ann, heck! She didn't even care about the doctor, her goal was Bin and Bin alone. However, she failed to notice the hidden alarms and was completely out-witted by a fragile girl.
As the two females faced each other, the cloaked figure raised her hand and spoke with a strangely robotic voice:
"I didn't come here for you."
Angry and frustrated, Ann retorted
"It doesn't matter what you came here for! Who do you think you are to trespa.s.s into my laboratory?"
"I wish not to complicate things, let us part ways here."
A short and sharp blade appeared on the woman's hand, she swiftly turned around and literally cut the thick metal door blocking her away, shocking Ann and making her a bit scared.
Only after a white did the doctor snap out of her daze and look at the fallen metal door which was cut in two pieces. Though she heard the tales of insanely strong people, she never got to witness them in action. Sure, there are some geniuses in the magic academy but they're just kids showing off, this and that was different.
This metal door was by no means ordinary yet it was so easily cut, this made Ann more curious about the purpose of the intruder's visit. The hooded woman clearly wanted Bin, as for what reason? It still remains a mystery.
After spending almost an hour thinking about various things, Ann was about to sleep and relieve her mental exhaustion only for another, softer alarm to ring in her ears.
Hearing this only meant one thing, Bin woke up or will wake up very soon. His condition is still stable but he isn't completely out of danger, yet.
Ann darted toward the nearby room and went to check Bin, whose eyelids started fluttering before slowly but surely opening.
When he regained consciousness, Bin felt a slight headache and pain all over his body, especially his back. He opened his eyes only for everything to seem blurry for a few moments before clearing up.
A young-looking female wearing a clean white coat entered his view, she was furrowing her brows while looking at the several monitors next to his bed.
"Can… you hear me?"
In response, Bin nodded his head and tried moving his body only to feel excruciating pain. Ann pushed him back on the bed while saying
"You should rest, you have not recovered yet."
Despite the thirst and hunger he was feeling, Bin still managed to utter a few words.
"W-where am… I?"
Ann sighed and calmly answered:
"Don't you remember? You came to my clinic all b.l.o.o.d.y and messy."
Bin tried remembering past events only to feel dizzy. All his memories were jammed up and only cleared up after a few minutes. He did indeed come here after a bitter struggle and the time it took him to arrive seemed longer than years! The pain and fatigue from that moment were still fresh in his mind.
Ann, who maintained her silence while glancing at him from time to time, slightly hesitated before finally asking what's on her mind.
"Did you have an operation in the past?"
Still thinking about what happened that night, Bin unconsciously nodded his head, causing her Ann to become more talkative and curious.
"No wonder no wonder!"
Like a hungry beast, she held her patient shoulders, her face inches away from his, and asked:
"Who! Who did the operation?"
Her fierce actions and extremely close face startled the dazed Bin. With difficulty, he pushed her body away while replying
"It was my personal doctor, the one who found out about my 'illness'. Dr. Galen."
Hearing this, Ann's pupils constricted and her breathing became faster.
"Galen Confort? THAT Dr. Galen?!"
Unable to understand the reason for her weird behavior, he nodded his head again.
"That operation saved your life, you know."
"I'm aware of that."
When he and Mina were kicked out of the orphanage and became homeless, his condition worsened and he almost died. It was just through a fluke that Galen stumbled upon them and saved his life. Although Dr. Galen was vastly wealthy, his connection with Bin wasn't known by many people, moreover, he only provided the two siblings with enough help so they could survive. He never mentioned the reason for helping them but Bin felt eternally grateful for that man.
Anyway, at that time, Galen was barely able to save Bin by planting something in his heart. Bin didn't ask what it is and was content as long as it kept him alive.
"No, you're not aware! That thing in your heart is a technology that surpa.s.ses ours by several decades!"
She gulped some saliva before explaining
"Magic and Science are not compatible. To create a machine that relies on both is hard but possible, however, whatever is inside you is absorbing the leftover Mana and storing it. I don't know how it functions but I can find out if you want."
"No need to find out."
As she heard his immediate rejection, she clicked her tongue and snorted. After a short silence, Bin asked:
"If it's absorbing leftover Mana, how come I'm still dying?"
"Because your body absorbs just too much Mana… it simply doesn't stop."
**********
Several scientists were inspecting numerous graphs on the monitors while jokingly placing bets.
"Hey, who do you think will survive this time?"
A middle-aged man laughed and replied
"I bet 50$ on that African boy!"
"I bet on that Asian girl!"
Three to four scientists were excitedly placing their bets for the experiments occurring a while later.
Their happy banter was stopped by a cold snort coming from a dark-haired woman wearing gla.s.ses. Her glare was enough for them to scatter and resume their work. A few minutes later, a stern-looking man wearing an expensive tuxedo entered the laboratory, causing all the scientists to turn toward him and respectfully bow. Only the gla.s.s-wearing woman remained seated, totally ignoring the man.
"Are all the preparation ready?"
While gazing at a small monitor showing several youngsters holed up in a cage, the woman said
"More or less."
She thought for a moment before asking
"Did you find the defective one?"
In response, the man snorted and angrily said:
"It's been almost 20 years, we couldn't find him back then, how are we supposed to find him now?"
The woman banged her fist on the ground, startling the angry man, who backed away.
"The experiment cannot begin if there's one missing! Find him!"
After clearing his throat and correcting his fearful expression, he said
"We're already on it."
