Jessy woke up the next day feeling invigorated, she was instantly reminded of what happened last night. She shut her eyes tightly, trying not to think of grandma, hope the old woman will survive the trauma and not be bothered by it, but she knows it will take a long time to forget the horror, she sighed heavily feeling pity towards granny that was subjected to absolute evilness. That was already yesterday and it's a new day, it's no longer pleasant to think about last night, she has no regrets though, sometimes she can go overboard when got carried away with her emotions.

Anyways, today is another day, time to get up, go to the canteen to meet her mother for breakfast.

Thinking of her mother made her smile.

She gets up from the bed and entered the bathroom.

A few minutes later, she was done fixing herself and start her daily routine, she exited her room going to the canteen.

Jessy saw her mother occupying their favorite table inside the canteen, waiting for her arrival. She smiled brightly and went to her mother's side. "Good morning, Mom!"

"Good morning to you my dear daughter," Sarah replied.

"What's for breakfast?"

"Just the usual..." Sarah pointed at the fried rice, sunny side up egg, strips of bacon, and ham. "And of course your favorite hot chocolate coffee!" she said.

"Thank you, Mom!" Jessy beamed. She picked up the spoon and fork and began putting foods in her mouth.

A minute later.

Jessy asked, "Mom—what's the current news today?"

Sarah shrugged her shoulders. "The usual...drug overdose...random knife attack in the street, shooting spree, kidnapping, missing teens and missing person...vehicle accident...rape and a lot more...and there was this news about thieves who tried to s.e.xually molest a granny who is living alone in her house and got their p.e.n.i.ses severed in the process."

"Okay, thanks for the info, Mom," Jessy mumbled, her face stoic. "Regarding drug overdose, have you heard of this famous singer who died in drug overdose, then her only daughter also died with drug overdose and the same thing happened to her adopted son as well, have you heard about it? Sadly, they all died due to drug overdose."

"Yeah, it's sad indeed, too many people already died of a drug overdose. It's kind of mind-boggling that people will still consume illegal drugs even if they know that it's lethal, addicting and can kill themselves if taken too much continuously," Sarah added.

"So what do you think of those people who do drugs, Mom?"

Sarah sighed. "People take drugs for so many reasons. It's a matter of choice. Some people chose drugs as their escape from reality, sometimes due to peer pressure, or they want to get high to forget their problems and pain or just out of plain curiosity and get hooked in the process. There's a lot of reasons why...spite knowing that it's harmful to their health in the long run. I viewed it as some kind of suicide...people who use illegal drugs are just waiting for that powerful deadly substance to squeeze the life out of them. People do stupid things even if they already know the possible outcome, so yeah...it's all about free choices that sometimes can lead to an untimely demise of the person."

"And what can you say about those people who use drugs, get sober in rehab then come back to drugs again and again?" Jessy continued.

"Well...they will die one day if they keep coming back to illegal drugs...it's an addiction that is hard to cure unless the person itself wants to get clean that will be the time the addiction stop. But when those people encounter other problems and new setbacks in their lives, they will succ.u.mb to using drugs again to forget their problems and sustain their addiction...it's a never-ending cycle of self-destruction."

Jessy's face turn dispirited. "I'm saddened of the waste of life every time somebody died of drug overdose. It's ironic that many people wanted to live longer but some people lose their lives too early due to drug overdose. Mom, do you think our society will be free from drugs one day? I want a drug free society!" she declared.

"Child, the world is bombarded with so many problems nowadays, drugs are just a small fraction of the bigger problem we are facing at current times. Our society is facing so many problems..." Sarah released a deep sigh.

"You are so well informed, Mom, for someone who is locked up here in the Facility," Jessy commented.

"Well...I have internet and computer my dear daughter...reading is my only outlet to explore the rest of the world," Sarah responded.

"Let's go back to the topic of illegal drugs, Mom."

"And what about it?"

"What can make people stop consuming an illegal substance?" Jessy asked.

"Simple...cut the roots. Arrest all the drug lords, drug dealers, and burn them to death!" Sarah said bluntly. "If no one produces those illegal substances anymore then where the users can buy drugs? Those users have no choice but to eventually stop and get rid of their addiction once and for all," Sarah answered.

"Sounds easy..." Jessy muses.

Sarah looked at her daughter closely in the face. "Huh? How can you say that it's easy?"

"Nothing, Mom," she said. "By the way, if I want to haunt those drug dealers one day...would you allow me? Would you give me your blessing—?" she asked.

Sarah stared at her daughter for a long time. "Don't try to play a hero young lady..."

Jessy smiled. "If you don't want me to play a hero...then you want me to play a villain? Or you want me to stay pa.s.sive and turn deaf ears to everything that is going bad in our society?"

Sarah continues to stare at her daughter at a loss of words.

Jessy held her ground. "I will ask you a question, Mom. If you are in my shoes...if you are gifted with great powers...What will you do with your life? If you have the capabilities to help a lot of people...would you remain pa.s.sive and just let the society deal with the evil ones and stay idle in your comfort zone? Or you would rather step in and fill that empty shoes—? Which is which, Mom?"

Sarah remains speechless for a few minutes. "Why are you asking me about all this stuff?" she finally found her voice again.

Jessy shrugged her shoulders. "One day, I will make a stand. It's just a matter of time..." she said.

Sarah breathed deeply, she knows what her daughter was talking about and she can be stubborn as a mule. "Just stay alive no matter what, that's all I ask from you," she said in resignation.

Jessy grinned confidently. "I will try to stay alive as long as I can, Mom."

"That's good enough for me," Sarah touches her daughter's hands affectionately. "But why bother to meddle in the affairs of the society when the vampire race is near to extinction—?"

Jessy twirled her spoon between her fingers, her eyes looking beyond the wall of the canteen.

"Because first and foremost, I am a human being, Mom. I am human and I care about the world that we live in, even if we are haunted, we can't deny that every inch of me is human...someday every piece of the puzzle will fit nicely and everyone will start again with a new beginning. I'm a believer in hope and fate...when darkness strikes they are the only factors that can help save humanity and will unite the world," Jessy said meaningfully.

Sarah's eyes welled. "Finished eating your foods, child. A hero needs to feed herself to stay healthy all the time," she joked.

Jessy smiled lovingly at her mother. "What do you want, Mom? A fearless daughter or a shy and timid daughter?" she grinned.

"I want a brave daughter who never abused her power," Sarah answered, her face turned serious.

Jessy nodded her head. "That would be me!" she said and showered her mother her silly smile.
