Looking down at her phone, she was glad that there were no messages from neither Kang Jun nor Mr. Long because that meant she still had time to spare.
As she went home she decided to pa.s.s by Fates Gate to grab a couple of desserts to share with Kang Mingyu. It was pretty late by the time she pa.s.sed by so there weren't many people there. In a matter of minutes, she got what she'd come for and headed home via taxi.
Thinking about how Kang Mingyu's face would look like a chubby-cheeked squirrel after shoving the deserts into his mouth made her giggle.
From the front seat, the driver looked back at her strangely. But she didn't care. She couldn't help herself, because, for some reason, Lu AnLing loved seeing the boy eat. Every time he did, he would wear a huge smile on his face and his big eyes would s.h.i.+ne like he was having the time of his life.
When Lu AnLing was young, she used to be the same.
Eating with her father at their small wooden table was something she would always look forward to, though, because of how busy he was trying to provide for their family he was almost never home. Only on Sundays, he would get a break. Back then Sundays were her favorite days of the week.
Sometimes Lu AnLing wondered how life would be like if her father was still alive. She probably wouldn't have ended up in the situation she was in now.
If he had lived she wouldn't have gone to the Lu family, and they would have spent her teenage years living a simple life in the countryside.
Lu AnLing couldn't help but feel her eyes water.
Back in the hospital, Grandma Lu had talked bad about the Kang families situation but Lu AnLing didn't believe that the Lu's were any better.
A succession war. Horrible relatives. Sibling rivalry; the Lu family had all of that too. The news about each family was completely different, in the eyes of others despite being almost the same. The only difference was that the Kang's demonstrated their power and were feared while the Lu's didn't have that much power and were liked by their entourage.
Well most of them at least…
Her siblings, Lu Shuya and Lu Duyi were liked, along with her cousin Lu Xia. Two of her cousins, Lu Jiayi and Lu Xinya were very spoiled and looked down on others, so they had many secret enemies. The others weren't much liked or disliked and this was where Lu AnLing found herself, for the most part.
Lu AnLing had never made much of an impact on others so many times she found herself as an accessory to Shuya.
Thinking about the Lu family, Lu AnLing frowned. Soon she would have to meet them again. Her grandmothers birthday was fast approaching.
Lu AnLing sighed.
Walking inside the hotel, the girl was in a daze but by now, she knew how to get to her room with her eyes closed. She went upstairs and she ended up at her door before she knew it.
"Miss Lu?" A familiar voice called.
Lu AnLing turned around quickly to see Kang Jun and Kang Mingyu. In his arms, Kang Jun was holding a big bag of pastries.
Kang Jun and Lu AnLing looked at each other strangely before she let out a laugh. "I see we both think alike."
"Three!" Kang Mingyu corrected.
Both him and Kang Jun had thought about bringing the pastries since they all seemed to share a sweet tooth in common.
Lu AnLing laughed once more.
She approached the two, crossed her arms over her chest and then gave Kang Jun a judging look. "I thought Mr. Long was dropping him off."
Seeing her approach, Kang Mingyu ran to her side and Kang Jun followed.
Hearing what she had said, Kang Jun wanted to laugh now. He couldn't believe the girl had just given him an 'aren't you suppose to be working?' look. It made him want to tease her, and he wouldn't give the opportunity up.
"You're not glad to see me?"
"…" Lu AnLing was speechless.
Kang Jun loved seeing that face. "I have some work in the hotel, so I decided to drop him off."
Snapping out of it, Lu AnLing took a deep breath.
Thank G.o.d Kang Jun had salvaged the conversation.
"You didn't have to bring him all the way up here," Lu AnLing lifted the bag of pastries in the air attracting Kang Jun's gaze. "I was out. I could have picked him up."
"But I wanted to."
Lu AnLing couldn't help but smile as Kang Jun's straightforwardness.
A moment pa.s.sed, as she and Kang Jun just looked at each other. Despite the fact that he was slightly late, Kang Jun made no move to leave. It was such a prime opportunity to spend time with her.
"So, what time are you coming back?" Lu AnLing said.
"I'm not sure. It might be really late." Kang Jun answered quickly and then, he took a step closer to her. Cutting the distance between them by half. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
For a moment, Lu AnLing felt her heart slam against her chest as the faint smell of fruits and roses tickled her nose.
The scent was so overpowering that she almost lost her senses.
"No, no, no. It's no worries. I'll stay with him until you come back, as per usual." Lu AnLing waved her free hand in front of her face.
Taking care of Kang Mingyu was nowhere near being an inconvenience. It actually made her really happy. Since coming back to T City, she hadn't made many friends and she hadn't spent much time around people just enjoying herself. It was usually all about work or visiting her grandmother and both of those things brought their own stresses and baggage. With Kang Mingyu it was different. He was a child so she didn't need to worry about keeping up appearances. And because of the boy's outgoing nature, while they were alone, she never felt awkward and they never had a dull moment.
The two would hang out in her room for a bit playing whatever game they fancied and then when it was time for bed Lu AnLing would accompany Kang Mingyu to Kang Jun's room, put him to bed and then wait until Kang Jun came back.
Unlike the girl's room, Kang Jun's had two beds so it was more convenient to let the little boy sleep there instead of letting him sleep in her room, on her bed, and then be forced to wake him up to bring him back to Kang Jun's.
No matter if they tried their hardest to be gentle and quiet, he would wake up either way. The boy was a super light sleeper.
"I'll try to come back as early as possible. I don't need to stay until the end anyway." Kang Jun said truthfully.
"You don't have to worry about us." Lu AnLing smiled but, it was an awkward one. Then, thinking of something, Lu AnLing began to giggle. "Won't your employee's be worried if they see the way you treat business?"
"Mmm," Kang Jun answered affirmatively. He knew they would but that didn't matter to him. He had something else that mattered much much more…
From the side, Kang Mingyu was beginning to feel forgotten. Seeing his aunties attention completely on Kang Jun, the boy frowned. He walked towards her and then pulled on her pants.
Feeling the tug, Lu AnLing looked down. The slight gloominess on the boy's face made Lu AnLing frown herself. She bent down to put her bag of deserts down, and then to pick the boy up.
"What's wrong honey?"
"Nothing." Kang Mingyu wrapped his arms around her neck.
Ever since the boy had cried in her arms, Lu AnLing felt as if she had become some type of surrogate mother to him. He was very attached to her and wanted to always be close to her.
This caused Lu AnLing to sometimes feel bad. She felt guilty...though, it wasn't only the guilt she felt towards her own child but also because she could only imagine what his real mother would feel if she saw this scene. Lu AnLing herself would be pained if she'd ever seen her child being closer to a woman that isn't her.
Her child...
Lu AnLing took a deep breath.
Ever since she had returned, her child lingered at the back of her mind but for the past few days, it had gotten worse. She stated remembering many things from when she was pregnant up until the point the child had been taken away.
She would have these recurring dreams whether she was asleep or awake and it caused Lu AnLing's heart to squeeze.
"I just missed you." Lu AnLing heard the little cutie say. His voice cracked slightly.
Her heart began to squeeze even more.
On the other hand, Kang Jun wanted to laugh at Kang Mingyu. The boy was sly, and in his heart, he couldn't help but praise him. He was truly a Kang at heart.
The man watched the scene for a second and then looked at his watch.
"I'll be going." He said, but before he left he made sure to bring both bags of pastries into Lu AnLing's room and then he patted Kang Mingyu's head.
"Be good."
Mingyu gave an 'aren't I always?' glare to Kang Jun.
"Be. Good." Kang Jun repeated.
In Lu AnLing's arms, Kang Mingyu smirked at him before replying with a slight annoyance. "I will."
"Bye. Work hard." Lu AnLing said to Kang Jun. A smile shone brightly on her rosy lips. She would have waved but her arms were busy.
The door shut behind him.
As he was walking away, both Kang Jun and Lu AnLing suddenly had the same thought.
The way they had interacted with one another was familiar. It was something that they would see on the streets every day... They acted like a couple. But not just any couple. With Lu AnLing was holding Kang Mingyu, saying goodbye to Kang Jun at the front door; it felt like a wife parting ways with her husband.
Kang Jun smirked and AnLing blushed.
Looking up to see his aunties face turn red, Kang Mingyu felt a bit dejected.
His second uncle had stolen the show once more.
