On the third day we could finally see, in the distance, the coast could be seen. Unlike the island, it extended to the two lateral extremes, its end could not be seen on the horizon. We had arrived on the human continent, Mannheim.
In a few minutes we landed at the port of the city. The houses had a certain simplicity, they were small, it was difficult to see one that had a second floor or was bigger than the others, this demonstrates its low purchasing power. This is the closest city to the demonic continent, the danger explains the abandonment.
Strangely enough, we're not approached by anyone, not even a guard. Some people who pa.s.sed by look at us with a certain fear, but no one says a single word.
"This s.h.i.+rt is too big." Alicia complains.
I asked her to wear one of my s.h.i.+rts. Her dress was very dirty and ruined, besides the appearance what worried me the most were her black marks, the old clothes didn't hide them enough. We need to buy her clothes urgently.
"You only need to use it for a while," I explain to her. "I try to hold on for a while."
"Okay" answers the girl.
Although it did not attract the eyes during the arrival, this reality changed quickly. Several people are looking at me with various expressions, most of them fearful, but the anger was also great. Maybe my human clothes and my brown eyes should hide the fact that I'm a vampire, however we had still arrived from the demonic continent, gossip spreads fast.
We left the boat at the port, there is nothing we can do with it, its objective had already been fulfilled. I take my backpack and we start to walk around the city, our focus is food, find a place to spend the night and find the guild.
"Hey, traveler." A woman says she's pulling me. "Don't you want to stay at our inn?"
Looking at the sign I see the name of the inn, Moon. Interesting, in this world there are several terms in English. The property was bigger than those around it, and had a second floor. The woman, despite her calm and smiling face, was very smart, vampires usually have a lot of money, I like how perceptive she is.
At the moment we have three medium silver coins, one large bronze and ten medium bronze coins. The human coin is called yon, it is divided between bronze, silver, gold and platinum coins, at least for normal people. The small copper coin is the smallest, worth 1 yen (one yon), an average copper coin is equivalent to ten small, large bronze is equivalent to ten medium and a small silver coin is equivalent to ten big bronze, and so on.
We followed the woman, who introduced herself as Rosa, into her inn. The entrance was a bar, there was a countertop at the end, a bookshelf behind was squandering a lot of bottles, tables were scattered in the remaining s.p.a.ce.
"We work like a restaurant too." She speaks by noticing my expression. "Oh, don't worry. We close early so as not to disturb our residents' sleep."
A thoughtful hostess.
We sit on chairs on the bench. Rosa takes a piece of paper and shows us.
"That's our price list," he says, delivering the paper.
"Thank you." I'll take it and show it to Alicia too.
"Renting a room for a full day costs three average bronze coins, if the room is for one person, for two the value increases to four" he explains. "We also serve coffee, lunch and dinner. "Lunch and dinner cost four small bronze coins, coffee costs two."
We decided to stay. I paid for two days at the inn, plus two meals to eat right now. In total eighty-eight yons.
"I'll prepare your food right now" says taking the table and going inside a door on the right.
We sat at a table away from the countertop, near the entrance, next to us was the staircase to the rooms. It was already night, I believe that around seven o'clock, people will probably start arriving now, the countertop is the closest place to the drink, let's keep away.
"Tomorrow we'll buy clothes for Alicia and sign up for the guild" I say.
"Okay." Alicia confirms it.
After a few minutes Rosa brought the food. A total of three dishes, each with food, soup, vegetables and bread.
"Is it okay to spend money like this?" asks Alicia.
"Children shouldn't worry about that." I take a piece of bread and put it in your mouth.
"But Alicia is the oldest" complains after chewing and swallowing.
In spite of her complaints she starts eating, I am happy to finally get a decent meal. The food was really delicious, a great variety of spices could be felt, bread was a little hard, but after wetting it in the soup it got a little better. While we were eating, people started coming in.
"How was it?" Rosa asked, coming close.
"A delight," I say.
"Alicia found it very tasty" talks while wiping her face with a napkin.
"So, I'm sure you want some information, after all, it must be difficult to come from the demonic continent. She keeps her voice down so that only we can hear.
"You could say yes," I speak with a smile. "And how much does that information cost?"
"Don't worry about it, it's always nice to help a partner." As he speaks, his eyes change color quickly from brown to black.
A demonic race living in disguise. Not only that, I could not even feel the difference between her and the humans, her level must be much higher than mine.
"I don't really need anything extraordinary, just a basic notion of prices," I answer.
She just smiles and settles down.
The daily gain of a plebeian is something around two to three average bronze coins. An adventurer can win more easily, but varies a lot thanks to the rank and type of mission. I can buy new clothes for Alicia with three medium coins for simple clothes, but there is the option to pay more on higher quality clothes or less on used clothes. He also told us where the guild was in town. Finally, most importantly, in order to take baths you usually buy buckets of water, each one costs a small bronze coin. I left two paid.
"I think I ended up getting distracted," he says looking around. "I have to serve the customers."

"Thank you for everything," I thank her.
"Alicia thanks you," she says, lowering her head.
"Don't worry about it." She answers by going to a nearby table.
There was no way we could buy clothes by then, the store was probably already closed. We went up to our room. Rosa had stirred the chopsticks and arranged a single room with one more mattress.
"Stay with the bed," I'll talk while I put the backpack in a corner.
"Isn't it better for Ioan to stay in it?" asks Alicia. "It's more comfortable."
I throw myself on the mattress that was on the floor.
"I wake up early, I'll wake you up when I get up," I answer by stretching.
She stands still for a while, maybe thinking about what I had said, but ends up lying in bed.
I think of the money Lucio left with me, it was thirty thousand one hundred and ten yon (30,110 yen), I didn't know how the monetary system worked, so it was a real shock to realize how big that amount was. I wonder if every vampire would have access to this amount, but it should not be possible, Lucio is a n.o.bleman after all.
Thinking about what I learned today, a memory comes to mind. When we were looking at the prices of the inn, Alicia said nothing when she saw the paper, but when I handed over the money she asked me about the amount she was spending.
"Alicia." I'll call her.
"Yes?" She talks a little sleepy.
"Did you learn to read?" I ask.
"Hmm..." He seemed to be sleepy. "Alicia's mother taught a little, but Alicia didn't have a chance to learn much."
I understand that she was very young when the black marks began to appear, and it is not surprising that she is not literate, I learned that the literacy rate of humans is very low, even some n.o.bles, which should be those studied, border illiteracy. The cla.s.ses with Lucio were helpful.
"How about we buy some books when we get a chance?" I ask.
Alicia, who was almost asleep, gets up on a jump.
"Books?" he asks. "But they're not very expensive."
Just like I thought. When we were on the island I saw how curious Alicia is, when I taught her the method of knowing if the water was clean her eyes sparkled. Someone like that would probably be a scholar if she was born into a high-cla.s.s family.
"But I think it would be a great investment," I say. "I don't have a good command of human language either, I also have to study, that would be great for both of us, don't you think?"
Your eyes sparkle.
"Yes, Alicia thinks so too." A big smile spreads on his face.
Somebody knocks on the door.
"Here are the buckets of water." Rosa's voice comes from outside the room.
"Let's take a shower now, let's go to the guild tomorrow" I say to Alicia.
"Okay." Alicia responds excitedly.
