It was immediately apparent that he was worried Alfred would try and kill Aella, since she was the king.
"Aella, can you make any sense of these carvings?" asked Alfred, putting her father at ease, but also confusing him.
"Wait, how do the two of you know each other?"
"It's a long story, father," she said, making her way over to Alfred to see what he was looking at. The entire interior of the building was empty, except for random rocks and dirt. The carvings on the walls were mostly gone, except for one batch Alfred was looking at in the back corner.
"I would like to say we have time, but I'm not sure we do. It doesn't take long for another swarm of creatures to build up in these mountains. It has to be magic, but I don't know how," he grumbled, following her to look at the sculptures.
"They've obviously been removed with great care," said Alfred, holding up his fist, giving them light to see the gentle sc.r.a.pes along the edges of where the carvings had been attached to the walls.
The carving depicted a group of demons, all of them far taller than the humans standing to greet them. All of the demons had wings and a few were carrying babies and small children. It was obvious they were poor, as their clothing was ragged and torn.
"This must be when the demons first arrived to the area, and the humans greeted them," said Aella.
"The humans greeted them?" asked General Brimsey in confusion. "I thought we've fought since the very beginning."
"I remember you telling me that the war has been going on for a long time," she said, looking up at the carvings.
"These demons look different from most of the demons we see now. They all have wings, while few demons are born with wings anymore. Even my wings aren't actually able to allow me to fly," said her father.
"They aren't carrying anything that could be considered a weapon, either," said Alfred. "We are taught by the church, that the demons arrived as warring people, to take over the area with force. This proves that isn't the case."
"There's writing scratched into the stone over here," Aella said, noticing something that wasn't just the scratches of where someone had removed the carvings.
"I recognize this here as elven, but I can't read it. That over there's different, and there's writing over here, too," said Alfred as he moved around the room.
"We need that sage of yours to figure out what writing this is," said Brimsey, rubbing his chin.
"Okay, we've seen the carvings. Now it's time to talk. How do you know Alfred?" asked Aella, turning to her father.
He chuckled a good deep chuckle, and she fought the sudden lump that appeared in her throat. "Alfred and I met on the battlefield shortly after I left you. He was on his way to kill the last king, and I was sent to stop him. The Advisors weren't happy when I reported that he went right by me, without engaging my troops, but I failed to mention that we had a cordial supper together."
"The General was making his guys fight a horde of monster beetles that were swarming towards some of the farms to the south. I stopped long enough to help them, and we became friends," explained Alfred.
"And you let him go kill the king?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I saw how he fought. I knew I couldn't take the boy. He's too fast for anyone. I was curious to see if he actually would kill the king, but of course, he did."
"The guy was horrible," said Alfred with a scowl. "I had to wait for the women to leave the room before I could kill him. It looked like he had taken advantage of every woman in the city, just about."
"That sounds about right," said Aella.
"What? How can that be right?" demanded her father.
"Well, when you fight constantly in the pits, then suddenly get permission to do whatever you want, I could easily see him grabbing every girl in sight to bang. That's about the only other thing those guys thought about down there, other than fighting and food."
General Brimsey grimaced in pain and shame, but Alfred jumped in before he could say anything.
"And with the new king only thinking of such things, it would be easy for those in power to continue running things the way they were, without having to worry about someone stepping up and actually questioning what they were doing. I imagine when you came along, they were pretty upset."
Aella grinned. "Voices were raised a couple of times, but when the very first thing I did was appoint a royal a.s.sa.s.sin, to take care of those who were giving me trouble, they stopped complaining as much. It's still pretty interesting to see which of them still try to do things behind my back."
"I couldn't handle the politics," growled Brimsey with a shake to his head.
"And that's why I'm here," she added with a wide grin.
"Alright, but how do you know Alfred?"
"We met in the marsh just north of the town our old house is in. There was a giant undead dragon, or something, that I killed for him."
"I could have taken it out," laughed Alfred with a shake to his head. "She's really good at fighting, I can easily see how she defeated everyone else in the pits to become the king."
"I heard they tried to rig the fight," said Brimsey, eyeing her.
"They did, but I believe they went a little overboard from the normal rigging they try to do. One of the guys I went up against had an evil cursed sword. When it blew up, everyone in the area was just gone. There wasn't even any dust left, I don't think. They announced me king pretty quickly, and got everyone out of there."
"I would have been at your coronation, but they sent me up here. None of the other guys in charge have been able to withstand the constant attacks. My troops are good, but they're wearing down. If you hadn't come…"
"And that's why we came," she threw in. "Now, I promised your guys a break, with food? What do you think they would like?"
"Anything other than monster meat, honestly. That's all we've had since we were moved up here."
"Alright, I'll be back in a moment," she said, thinking about teleporting, and her cloak responded, from deep within her. All of her magical items had become a part of her, somehow. Not wanting to try and figure it out now, Aella soon had her clothing regrown and teleported to just outside Bob's bar, the Drowned Mermaid. This guy had been helpful so far, maybe he could pinpoint where she could buy, or acquire, a lot of food for the troops.
"Ah, Aella, so good to see you," said Bob, setting out a drink for another guy, before coming over to see her as she sat down at his bar.
"Bob, how much would it cost to find out where to get some food for my troops in the north?"
He seemed to think about that for a moment, then sighed. "I'll just tell you this one. It's not really worth much to me. Go investigate the mountains where the monsters keep coming out from, and you should be able to find what you're looking for. Though, don't take any of the other demons with you."
She thought about that for a moment, then shrugged. It would be so much easier if this guy would just tell her what she wanted to know, but she had intended to investigate the mountains, so this worked. Giving him a nod of thanks, she returned to the room where Alfred and her father were still waiting.
"We're going to investigate the mountains really quick, so just have your guys start gathering the hurt and dead together while I make arrangements," she said.

General Brimsey saluted and left, leaving them alone.
"It's not safe in those mountains, are you sure?" Alfred asked, studying her face.
"We're running out of time. There's nothing here, other than some scribbles on the walls that Bridgette needs to look at. We need to investigate what's up with all of these monsters and then get back to Josephine before Curt gets himself killed."
"It will be good to see Bridgette and know she's alright. I imagine Josephine is getting sweet on Curt. He was an insufferable p.r.i.c.k when we started out, but he's been pretty consistent with only trying to win her over, and not run off with every girl we pa.s.sed."
"Then I'll bring Bridgette to see this after we check out the mountains."
They quickly made their way to the foot of the valley the monsters had been pouring out of, to the concerned looks of the demons that watched. Ignoring the calls of worry and caution from behind her, Aella began teleporting ahead, as far as she could see. Alfred arrived next to her, each time she paused to look for the next spot.
"Is that a building?" asked Alfred, as she paused on a ledge overlooking the narrow valley below them.
Random feathers and scat marked where the harpies had perched earlier, and other claw marks heralded other monsters prior to that. Ahead, built onto the top of a cliff, was what appeared to be a flat area. It could easily be the roof of a building.
"One way to find out," she said, preparing to jump.
"Be careful, there could be magical traps. The architecture looks the same as the most ancient buildings I've ever seen," he cautioned.
"Then I'll go to that cliff overlooking it," she said, pointing to a nearby cliff that would afford a better view of the structure.
"Alright," he breathed, disappearing from view as he dashed with his super speed.
He was already there when she arrived, crouching to look down at the intricate view below. Joining him, the sight took her breath away.
