"I don't know. I just have this premonition. I don't think this is a simple dinner."
"The word 'simple' doesn't exist in my family. You'll get used to it." She gave his hand a squeeze to comfort him, and he placed a quick peck on her ear as they walked into the house.
"You're here! Come, come, let mom take a look at you," my mom squealed excitedly as she approached Quincy. She pushed me off to the side, hooking her arm around his so naturally. My dad gave me a comforting look.
"She's been stuck looking at me for years now. Let her refresh her sight with him," he said, patting me on my back.
Here I thought granny was the only cougar. I smacked myself for thinking innocently.
"You look so thin. Isn't summer taking care of you? If she isn't, you can move in with us and I'll treat you better."
If she wasn't my mom, I'd yank her hair off her head.
"She's really good to me. I'll try eating more. No need to worry, mom."
Wow! He called her mom so naturally. 5minutes ago, he was still nervously clinging on to me. Men really are untrustworthy.
"Where's granny?" I asked after surveying the whole house and not getting a glimpse of her.
"She'll be down in a bit. Let's move to the table. I'll serve the dishes now."
Something was definitely not right.
"How has work been recently?" my dad asked Quincy.
They both yapped on about work, sports, politics, and whatnot. The food was all served, then it happened.
"Granny, what are you wearing?" I asked, not bothering to hide the shock in my voice.
My granny was dawning a wine sequined gown with slits running on both sides. She topped her look off with a light pink shawl and black kitten heels.
What was happening here? Why was my grandmother so extra?
Quincy wasn't any less shocked than his little darling. He knew the dinner wasn't simple, but never would he have imagined that such a grand entrance would be made by granny Jacob. What was this dinner really about?
"I need to look good in front of my family's grandson." She answered elegantly.
"You've always looked good grandma." I quickly adjusted my mood and gave Seraphina a helpless look.
"Your eyes are good boy," she said as she took her seat at the table.
Finally, we all started to eat. My plate soon turned into a hill as everyone put a piece or two for me. Just when I was starting to let my guard down, Laura's voice drifted over.
"So, have you guys done it yet?" She asked with an innocent smile blooming on her face. I could see a hint of Summer somewhere in there.
*Cough**cough**cough*
Summer coughed frantically, almost choking on her meal. I patted her back to calm her down.
"Mom, we are having dinner here. Let's not talk about the unnecessary," she warned. My baby was like a cute little tiger.
The whole situation was awkward for me, so I said nothing, blending into my surrounding.
"How is that unnecessary? You both look good now, but you'll look even better after getting down. Don't you see how I glow everytime you see me?"
It was my turn to cough. Mother, isn't that a little too much information to put out there? h.e.l.lo people!
"Do you need granny to pick an auspicious date for you copulation?" Granny interjected.
"I'm just gonna pretend like I didn't hear that." Summer really was tired.
"Mom, we are taking our time to connect on an emotional level first. All will be done in due time." I finally cut in.
"That's good. Mom hopes your relations.h.i.+p will keep getting better," she said smilingly.
I held on to summer's hand and rubbed it between my palms.
"Let's just have a normal dinner okay?" Paul said, coming to the resue.
"Well I was just trying to help out. What if someone s.n.a.t.c.hed Quincy away?" Laura said in a concerned tone.
"Who is brave enough to seduce this old woman's in-law!" Granny Jacob hollered.
"No one granny. I belong fully to Summer. There's no doubt about that."
The elders nodded their heads approvingly, and I let out a long sigh. This has to be the longest dinner of my poor life.
"Seeing how you two are neighbors, why not have her move in with you instead. I think it's more convenient that way," granny suggested.
"We were also thinking about doing that. We'll be moving in together after New year's," Summer said. It was one of the things we spoke about last night.
"That's good."
The dinner finally came to an end. As we bade our goodbyes, Paul drew me over to a corner.
"When do you plan on getting married?"
My brain immediately short-circuited. Isn't this all going too fast?
"Summer still has so much to accomplish. Once she says she's ready, we'll get married immediately." She still needed time to grow and spread her wings. Getting married was a topic for the future.
Content with my answer, he laughed heartily, "good boy."
On summer's side...
"Let's go pick out a s.e.xy outfit later. Let mom teach you the art of seduction."
"Mom, forget it. Just take care of yourself and the family. I'll come over often, without Quincy." She hugged her mom and turned away before she got a reply.
Laura looked at granny Jacob and shook her head.
"What a silly girl," she laughed.
In the car...
"Let's never have a private dinner with them, okay?"
"Okay. Once bitten, twice shy babe."
What a dinner that was!
