To his surprise, Max sat next to Liz casually.
"We know each other.", Max shamelessly put his arm around the back of her chair.
Max did his best not to glare at his brother while thinking, how does Hunter know this woman, Elizabeth? He can see that Hunter is familiar with Liz, but… there is no way that Hunter knows her, because on Monday they b.u.mped into each other at the hospital and Hunter didn't know who she is. Later in their family home he barely gave any description of the woman. Yet, here they are… about to have lunch, and Hunter invited her, so he knows her somehow. Just what is going on?

Max already guessed that Hunter arranged for this lunch to set him up. Well, the only thing he can do is to play it cool and see how things end up.
Seeing that Max is acting like everything is fine, Hunter turned to Liz. "Really? You know each other?"
Hunter looked at Liz, eagerly expecting her outburst.
"We know each other.", Liz confirmed indifferently while repeating Max's words. She refuses to show that Max's sudden appearance shook her up.
"Do you remember the man from Monday?", she asked Hunter while giving him a knowing look.
Liz noticed Max's arm at the back of her chair, and she leaned forward, making sure not to touch it. She does not want any touching happening with this man. Ah! He is the one with thousands of girlfriends! She is experiencing many feelings while sitting so close to Max but being charmed by him senseless is definitely not one of them.
"He is the unpleasant one?", Hunter had to bring this point with a hope to shake things up. Max is too relaxed, and it's making Hunter anxious.
"Unpleasant? Why would you call me unpleasant?", Max asked Liz innocently when he saw her respond to Hunter's question with a nod.
Liz narrowed her eyes at Max. "And how would you describe your behavior? You left me in the rain, and then treated me like I did something wrong, and my only intention was to help you."
Max reminded himself that this is not the time to be arrogant, he needs to pacify her. Who knows what else Hunter has up his sleeve? Hunter always liked pulling pranks on him, but this… Max will get back at him, with interest! But that is later… now he needs to focus on Liz.
"It was a bad day for me.", Max admitted.
Max does not expect Liz to be friendly with him, but if he manages to bring her to a non-hostile status, it will be a success because Hunter will lose a potential ally.
"Well, thanks to you, it was a bad day for me as well.", Liz responded curtly, ignoring his puppy-eyed expression.
"To my defense, I was under stress because of the car accident."
"And I was under stress because of my job interview, but you didn't see me las.h.i.+ng out randomly."
Max sighed. "I know. I'm sorry."
Max's regret for his behavior on that Monday morning is genuine. He is always the one with a charming smile, making girls swoon, and that Monday he was nowhere close to that. No wonder she ignored his advances in that ambulance van. Liz was probably so upset that she didn't notice his enchanting handsomeness.
Liz looked at Max and somehow, she felt that this 'I'm sorry' was real. Well, that was on Monday, and he did have an accident, and he is her neighbor… even if the first impression was bad, and she does not approve of his lifestyle, she should not be hostile. She can be polite while maintaining her distance. Yes. That is the right approach.
Hunter observed that neither Max or Liz have any will to fight, and he could not believe it! Will everything just deflate like this? Where is the big explosion? Ah, Liz does not know that Max told his family that she is his girlfriend. But he got that covered.
Right on cue, Sabrina entered.
"Oh, my, my… everyone is here already! I didn't realize that I'm late!", Sabrina walked toward their table and her eyes landed on Liz. "And this… oh, how I wanted to meet you. Thank you, Hunter, for inviting me."
Sabrina shook Liz's hand and introduced herself.
"Ever since Max said that he has a girlfriend, I am itchy to meet you and to see the woman who can get this rascal to settle down… He is so protective of you, does not want to share anything, I have so many questions! …"
Sabrina chatted enthusiastically while Liz processed what Rina said.
Liz's smile faded and was replaced with shock and confusion at the thought: did she say, 'a girlfriend'?
Liz's sight moved to Max who was pretending that he is not there. She wanted to ask Max what is that about, but not in front of Hunter and Sabrina. Liz was never the one to cause a scene, and she can see that Max is uncomfortable. Just what is going on here? Did Hunter set this up? She does not care much about Max, but… did Hunter set HER up? Did he use her in order to play some sick trick on his brother and sister?
Liz forced a smile.
"Max, dear, can we have a word? In private…", Liz gestured toward the exit.
Max raised his eyebrows in surprise. Did she call him 'dear'? And she didn't expose him? When he heard Rina's voice, he was mentally preparing to face his family's torment because he was caught in a lie, but this… just what is this?
He stood up and followed Liz.
The one more shocked than Max was Hunter. He looked at Max's and Liz's retreating backs with his mouth slightly open. Just what is the meaning of this?! Max was obviously lying that Liz is his girlfriend! And Liz found out! But… why did they walk outside? And did she call Max 'dear'?
Rina was tugging Hunter's arm, making him focus on her. "Thank you for inviting me. She is prettier than I thought and seems nice… Did you see how Max listens to her? He followed her out without a question. I can tell that she is the one…"
