Elizabeth got home and she was not sure how she reached there.
What a disaster! This whole week is a disaster!
Her sight fell on the shelf where she keeps editions of medical magazines and she flung them all down on the floor angrily.
She noticed that one of the magazines has a headline: 'Exclusive interview with Christian Snow, MD! All about his latest breakthrough in knee replacement surgery!'
Elizabeth gritted her teeth, stomped into the pantry and returned with a carboard box. She stuffed all the magazines into that box and dumped them into a container for recycling behind her building. Like this, there are no works of that annoying Dr. Snow in her apartment.
She does not want to see any hint of him in her s.p.a.ce!
Why did she ever think that he is a person worth admiring? Scoundrel!
Because of him, the whole hospital turned against her. No one sees her as a respectable neurosurgeon! The nurses look at her like she is a spoiled girlfriend throwing a tantrum, and even Chairman Lee reprimanded her and told her to go home early!
Liz returned to her apartment and paced back and forth for some time while her anger flared with every step.
She needs to vent. She needs to break something.
But, how is that constructive? Breaking things… stupid. She will end up destroying her own things and for what? For that pompous jerk who thinks that he has a right to invade her life? Jeopardize her career?! Destroy years of her hard work just like that?!!
At this rate, there is no way that her peers will acknowledge her and that she ends up at the Symposium of Neurosurgeons.
She might as well give up and submissively return to New York and work under the shadow of her father her whole life.
Elizabeth gave herself a tight slap on the cheek.
"Wake up!", she exclaimed. "Are you about to give up?"
She can't give up. Not because of this. Not because of anything! Elizabeth Williams is not a person who gives up no matter what the setback is.
Wasn't she the target of numerous pranks and jealousy because of her outstanding performance in school? And what did she do? She left them all in the dust. Yes, that is who Elizabeth Williams is.
Her father always said that if existing options are not favorable, Elizabeth with create her own path!
All this mess is just a seatback and she will get back and it will all work out. No road is without obstacles, especially when you are aiming high. And she is aiming for the peak!
All that is fine, and motivating, but right now she still needs that outlet…
Liz went to the pantry and returned with a bottle of wine. This will do.
She opened the bottle and didn't bother getting a gla.s.s. Today she drinks, and tomorrow she will face her problems… whatever they are.
…
Across the hall, in Max's apartment…
4:02 PM
Mia was surprised to get a call from Brianna. She has so much to tell her!
"It's Bri!", Mia told Hunter (who took another day off from work to spend with her).
"Hey, Bri! What's up?!", Mia cheerfully answered the call.
"I don't know… How about you tell me what is going on there?", Brianna grumbled.
Mia was confused. "What do you mean?"
"Elizabeth called me, asking if I have wine because she is out. I think she wanted to call you."
Mia checked the time. "Wine? Is she drinking at work?"
"I don't know if she is at work, but she is drunk. So, let me ask you again: What is going on there?"
"Uhm… I don't know. I will check and get back to you." Mia ended the call and swiftly opened the app for GPS tracking of friend's phones.
For several years, Bri, Mia and Liz are sharing each other's locations.
Mia saw that Liz is close, in her apartment probably.
Mia hopped off the bed and swiftly started putting her clothes on.
Hunter watched her with a concerned expression. "What happened?"
"I don't know. Liz is home, drunk. I will check on her."
"I will join you.", Hunter got off the bed also and started dressing up.
…
Few minutes later, in Liz's apartment…
"Hey, what happened?", Mia asked Liz who was sprawled on the sofa.
"Hi Mia!", Liz slurred.
Mia gestured to Hunter to stand on the side and be quiet. She guessed that it's something related to Dr. Snow and if Liz notices Hunter, she might not be willing to talk. But Mia thinks that Hunter (and Max) should know about this. Yesterday she was almost fine with keeping Dr. Snow's advances from Anderson brothers, but seeing Liz like this, Mia believes that it's time for an intervention.
Mia helped Liz sit up and sat next to her. "Why are you home so early?"
"Chairman told me to go home."
"Why?"
"Because my love life is preventing the hospital from serving their patients.", Liz responded.
"How?"
"Long story…"
"Start from the beginning… Is this about Max or Dr. Dreamy?" Mia saw Liz's eyes flash dangerously and she quickly corrected herself: "I mean… Dr. Snow?"
Liz nodded. "You remember that yesterday he sent flowers? When I gave those flowers away, I thought he got the message and he did… but the message he got is that I need more flowers. My office ended up like a flower shop needing seven nurses to clean it up while delivery truck blocked the main entrance and all that caused patients to sneeze in three elevators and it's all my fault because if I stop rejecting sincere apologies and get back together with Dr. Snow like an obedient girlfriend all this would not happen and the hospital can continue working without interruptions… so Chairman told me to go home."
Mia and Hunter exchanged confused glances. Liz is slurring, and they understood the words, but they don't make much sense.
"What do you mean, get back together with Dr. Snow like an obedient girlfriend?", Mia asked after some time.
"The nurses who came to take flowers from my office confronted me asking why I am humiliating Dr. Snow by not accepting to reconcile with him."
"Reconcile? Why didn't you tell them that you have a boyfriend?"
Liz's head bobbed. "I did… and they asked who can be better than Dr. Snow… and I…"
"You what?"
"I thought that maybe they know Max, and I was afraid to say that it's him." Liz dissolved into sobs. "I am a horrible girlfriend… Worrying about my reputation more than my relations.h.i.+p… I don't deserve him."
"Oh, sweetie…", Mia pulled Liz into a hug. "It's OK. You will see that it will get better."
"You don't understand, Mia. It will not get better.", Liz spoke through sobs. "This is not something that can be fixed. I am enjoying my time with Max and all the attention he is giving me while hiding him in the closet. I am scared of ending up on one of those websites again and of people pointing fingers at me like I am a cheap woman he plays with, even though I know it's not true. I am not ready for a relations.h.i.+p, and maybe I will never be. I don't have it in me to fight for it no matter how good it feels. The only thing I know is how to be a doctor and I am not good at having fun or having a boyfriend… And see? All this mess is caused by romance nonsense. If I stayed focused on my work only, none of these would happen! None! If I didn't have lunches with Dr. Snow and accepted the one outside work, he would not get any ideas about me and I would still be in my office, helping people get better instead of coming home early and crying in self-pity and there is no more wine…"
Mia patted Liz's back. "Honey… don't put it all on you. It takes two to be in a relations.h.i.+p. I told you to talk to Max, didn't I?"
Elizabeth snorted. "What would he do? Punch someone? How will that help anything?"
"If you talk to him, maybe you find out that he has other ideas…" Mia felt that Liz is completely leaning on her and guessed that she is sleeping off. Well, there is no point in talking anymore. "Come, let me help you change and get you to bed…"
Mia waved Hunter to come and help.
Hunter carried half-asleep Liz to bed and then stepped outside the bedroom, giving them the privacy so that he does not see something he should not, while Mia changed Liz into sleepwear.
…
Mia got out of the bedroom and found Hunter on the sofa.
"Is she sleeping?", Hunter asked when Mia sat next to him.
"Yup. Like a log."
Hunter pulled Mia into a hug. "This does not look good does it?"
Mia sighed and leaned her head on Hunter's shoulder. "Liz was always… complicated. I think that is why she never had a proper boyfriend."
Hunter disagreed. "I think that Liz is straightforward. She knows what she wants and how she wants it. The one bringing in complications is Max. It is much easier to deal with Liz than with Max, and at the same time in the current situation only Max can find a solution."
Mia agreed. "He should return from work soon, right? Text him to get hangover medicine on the way back. Liz will need it when she wakes up."
