I woke early the next morning in Abby's bed to find it empty and someone rummaging around in the closet. "Where is it?" I heard in an Irish accent. I quietly got out of bed and walked to the closet. Pulling the door open, I realized that it was Abby looking frantic.

"Abby? What are you looking for?" I asked as I stepped into the closet. She looked up at me and her eyes were different. They were electric blue with red rings around the edge of the irises and her fangs protruded from her lips. "Abby?"

"Where is the book?" she asked in the Irish accent, a rough undertone to her voice.

"What book?" I asked hoping that she wasn't talking about the black book of Lucifer. I had hidden it in a secret compartment in the wall next to her wardrobe.

Suddenly, she had me pinned against the wall, with one hand around my throat. "Don't play games, human, you know what book," She spat. She had me lifted off of the floor and I couldn't breathe. I struggled against her but couldn't break her grip. "Now, Adam, where is the book?" she asked again, this time s.p.a.cing every word out. I glanced at my little hiding place and she saw me. She dropped me and I hit the floor gasping for air as she started for the wardrobe.

"No, Abby, leave it alone! It's dangerous!" I choked out.

"Only in the wrong hands," she said over her shoulder. "But in the hands of a true demon," she laughed a maniacal laugh that made my skin crawl and the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

"Abby?" I asked but she didn't answer. She was pus.h.i.+ng on the wall trying to open the compartment.

As it clicked open, Casimir came through the door. Abby turned around and looked at him. He stood there and looked into her eyes, over at me then back to her. "Casimir," she growled.

Recognition registered on his face, "Ketheras," Casimir growled back. His posture s.h.i.+fted and he readied himself just as Abby lunged at him. He grabbed her wrists but she fought back, trying to thrash at his face. He held her at bay and turned to me, "Hide the book!" he yelled.

I jumped up and grabbed the book from the little compartment and I heard her voice, "Cas, help." It was her voice, no menacing tone beneath it, just her sweet voice pleading.

"Cas, what do we do?" I asked just wanting to help. Instead, I served as a distraction to Casimir. Abby leaned back, brought up her legs planting her feet in the middle of his chest and kicked free from him. As she back flipped and landed on her feet, Casimir flew backwards down the hallway and slid halfway down to the living room. She glanced at me and hissed, "I'll be back for that!" She turned toward the hallway as Casimir was getting to his feet. She took off down the hall and practically speared Casimir in the gut.

I ran to the closet and hid the book again. I heard a big crash coming from down the hall and practically flew down the hall myself. When I came around the corner, I could see Abby against one of the beams on the back wall. The gla.s.s in the big doors, leading to the pool room, were shattered where Abby had gone through.

"Casimir, what is going on? What's wrong with Abby?" I asked as I ran to Casimir.

"She's enraged from those things. She's lost control and Ketheras is rising up," Casimir said in haste.

"Ketheras, the demon? But he's dead!" I said confused.

"Ketheras still resides in the blood of Kethra. Therefore, he still resides in her. With those things being pumped up on steroids, the rage was strong and as she was wounded by one of them, it has infected her with that rage," Casimir quickly explained and began to stare at Abby.

I looked over to her myself and noticed that she was now standing, her dark brown hair was red as fire and her eyes were nearly completely red as blood. Ketheras had truly returned.

"Casimir!" she shouted but it was a deep bellowing voice that rang throughout the room.

"s.h.i.+t!" Casimir whispered under his breath. "I'm sorry you have to see this, Adam," he murmured without looking at me.

"See what?" I asked and that's when I saw it for the first time. I'd heard about the Krznik transformation and even read about it in Dru's diary but I had never actually seen the change.

His long, light blond ponytail turned white as snow, as he pulled the string that held it back and it fell around his face. He pulled off his thin metal framed gla.s.ses to reveal blood red eyes. Not like Abby's, which were red in the irises, but the whites, were red with black irises. His fangs protruded from his upper lip and his fingers curled into claws with long, sharp pointed nails. He hissed and glanced at me. I was in amazement and humbled at the sight of a Krznik.

Casimir and Abby both simultaneously began running at each other, cras.h.i.+ng into one another in a thud in the middle of the pool room. You could see the contrast of red hair against white hair, black on red eyes versus red on white eyes.

"What's going on?" Lothair and Leon asked as they came cras.h.i.+ng into the room, Edward running in behind them fiddling with his gla.s.ses.

"Ketheras," I said and Lothair turned pale.

"What? How?" he asked as Casimir and Abby continued thras.h.i.+ng around the pool room.

"Ketheras? Who is Ketheras?" Edward asked.

"The Windigo, when it got her yesterday, the rage transferred through the wound. She's lost control!" I explained to Lothair then turned to Edward, "Ketheras was the demon that created the Kethra. He was killed over two thousand years ago but apparently still resides in Kethra blood to return when they are fully enraged."

"No, just Dru," Leon corrected.

Lothair was already digging in cupboards looking for something. I asked, "Lott, what are you looking for?"

"The antidote, to help Abby gain control," Lothair answered and Leon was right there helping. I turned to see what was going on with Abby and Casimir.

Abby spun and kicked Casimir square in the chest and he flew backwards against a beam that separated the gla.s.s windows. Before he hit the ground, Abby was grabbing his arm and swung it behind his back with a horrible snap. She threw him against the opposite wall and he fell to the floor.

"Sometime today, Lothair!" Casimir yelled as loudly as he could. He stood and threw out his arm that Abby had broken and I watched as it turned and snapped back into place. His hair began to flow around him as if the wind were blowing it. His eyes began to practically glow and his fangs elongated. From nowhere, two black bat-like wings rose behind him. He looked frightening and powerful. I could see what Dru had fallen in love with. Casimir really was a force to be reckoned with, he was definitely from a whole other world.

"Working on it, Cas, just a moment more," Lothair shouted but I don't think Casimir was really here anymore.

Abby s.h.i.+fted as well, her long narrow fingers tightened into claws and her nails were fire red and pointed. Her normal soft pink lips were also red now and the blue was completely gone from her eyes.

They walked slowly to the middle of the room watching each other closely, stalking the other in a circle. "Adam, hand," I heard Lothair say and I turned to see his hand extended toward me. I reached out my hand as I approached the counter.

"Why?" I asked.

"We need your blood," he answered and using a knife, he p.r.i.c.ked my index finger. I flinched a little from the pain that shot through my hand as he did it, but I thought about the fact that this was going to bring Abby back. I watched as blood dripped into the bowl and when he got enough blood, he wiped my finger with his. Dripping the last drop into the bowl, he stirred it up and picked up a syringe, filling it from the bowl. "Ready!" he shouted and ran around the counter.

"Usually, we would just administer this by mouth but in her present state, I don't think she would take it," Leon added.

We watched intently as they circled each other. Abby jumped forward then back, testing Casimir's reflexes. He didn't flinch; his eyes were trained on Abby, sharp and focused. Suddenly, Abby jumped and her claws caught Casimir across the face, not that he didn't see it coming but more like he let it happen, Abby smiled at her own little false victory over Casimir but he stayed stoic, not moving a muscle.

My nerves were beginning to fray as I waited for Casimir to make a move to restrain Abby. I wanted this to be over. I wanted our Abby back.

Abby moved in, faster than I could see, with a roar she began to swing, hit and kick Casimir. He blocked most of them and came back with one strong hit to her chest, sending her flying through the air and skidding across the floor. By the time she stopped, Casimir was right next to her. He reached down and grabbed her, picking her up as he wrapped his long arms around her.

"Lothair, now," Casimir called out with a booming voice and Lothair took off. I didn't really know what to do but stay out of the way. Lothair was right in front of her with Casimir behind her holding her arms. As he reached out to stick the syringe in her neck, she lashed out and bit his arm. He dropped the syringe and nearly howled in pain. I ran forward trying to help free Lothair when he hit her in the face, which in turn freed him. I watched as he hit the floor screaming in agony. I looked at the syringe and took off. I reached down to grab the syringe off of the floor but just as I got my fingers on it, she brought her foot up and kicked me. She kicked me right in the face and I fell to the floor.

She head b.u.t.ted Casimir and got free from his grasp by flipping back over his head and planting both feet in the middle of his back. She kicked off, sending him face first into the floor as she flipped one more time, landing on her feet. Lothair was on the floor holding his arm, rolling around in pain. Leon and Edward were still in the kitchen in safety and I knew why. Abby's blood could kill either of them with one bite.

I looked at her and she was in the middle of the room with everyone around her on the floor. I had the syringe in my hand and tightened my grip on it. I stood and focused, envisioning a body of bright light. I took off at her letting the bright light fill me as we crashed into each other like two tidal waves in the ocean. Immediately, I forced the light through my hand and into Abby. The red in her eyes fluxed and her angry grimace faltered. I brought up my other hand with the syringe and stuck it into her neck, pus.h.i.+ng the plunger.

She pulled back and stumbled a second as she yanked the syringe from her neck. "You…you…" she mumbled in the rough voice that had taken her. Casimir was beside me watching as Abby fell to her knees grabbing her abdomen. I started for her, Casimir put his arm out trying to stop me, but failed. I pushed through his arm and was next to her. She was in pain, physical anguish and I just wanted to take it away. "Abby?" I whispered.

"Adam," she cried softly through her pain. She reached out and took my hand.

"I'm here," I rea.s.sured her. "I'm always here." She fell into me and I held her close, cradling her head in my arm.

Looking around, Leon was knelt down with Lothair, whose arm was red and inflamed. I could see his veins from where I was and he smiled at me through his grimace, letting me know all was forgiven. Casimir stood near Abby and I looking more like him though still covered in blood. Edward just stood at the frame of the shattered gla.s.s door. His eyes were narrow and his lips cinched tight. The look he was giving Abby sent a s.h.i.+ver up my back, I didn't understand what was wrong or why he was glaring at her like that.

All was silent as we waited for Abby to return to us. Her sobs quieted and she began to move, bringing her hands up to push herself up. She looked into my eyes and tears lined them but they were her eyes again. No red at the edge, no red in her hair or on her lips, she was back to normal. "The book?" she whispered.

"Safe," I replied softly.

She looked around the room at the devastation that she had caused and I could see the regret in her face. "I'm sorry, you guys. I couldn't…I tried…but…" she stopped.

"Don't," Casimir said as he knelt down next to her. "We should have seen this coming. We should have given you the antidote last night, and then this wouldn't have happened."

"Yeah, I second that," Lothair said as he held his arm to his chest. He got to his feet. "I'm just glad we had everything that we needed for it, including an immune's blood," he laughed.

She looked at me and could see the cut on my finger where Lothair had p.r.i.c.ked it. It had stopped bleeding and only hurt a little. She lifted my hand to her lips and kissed it, I felt a warmth enter my fingertip from her lips. When she let go, though, the cut was gone. "I'm sorry, Adam," she said sweetly as she looked up at me. My nose was still bleeding from where she had kicked me. She raised her hand to my face and wiped away the blood and I saw the tears fill her eyes. Then the same warmth touched my cheek from her hand.

"No, don't, Abby. It's not like you personally meant to," I rea.s.sured her.

"Help me up, Babe," she asked as she struggled to get up herself. I lifted her up to her feet and she grimaced slightly.

"You okay?" I asked.

"Yeah, just a little sore from the antidote, it feels like fire in my gut," she giggled.

The swelling in Lothair's arm had gone down, but it was still red and irritated. He walked over to us and Abby reached out to wrap Lothair in a hug. "I'm sorry, Lothair, but thank you for your help and yours, too, Cas." She turned to Casimir and finished, "thank you for kicking my a.s.s and keeping me from hurting anyone else." She looked at me and I knew she was in reference to me.

"Abby, stop it. You're okay, we're okay, and n.o.body is mad or angry or hurt. But you are exhausted and you need some rest," I told her.

"Adam's right, Abby, you do need some rest. We're all fine here, you need to sleep," Casimir agreed.

"We're fine," Lothair said.

"Go rest," Leon whispered. "Relax, don't think about this, calm yourself and rest." He touched her head with both hands and she immediately relaxed, "Go."

"Okay," she said and began toward the kitchen holding my hand, pulling me with her. I followed her down the hall to her room. She stopped in front of the bed and began to strip off her clothes. I went to the dresser and pulled out a nightgown for her as she shuffled out of her tight leather pants. She crawled into the bed and looked at me coyly. "Lay with me, Adam?"

"Of course," I answered as I crawled into the bed next to her. She curled up under my arm with her head snuggled into my chest. Before I knew it, she was out like a light. I laid there rubbing her head and twirling her hair in my fingers as she slept in my arms. She seemed so peaceful, not near what she had been over an hour ago.

I rested my head back, going over what all had happened. Abby had lost control to Ketheras, a demon that had been dead for over two thousand years. And he wanted the book! I knew that book would be trouble to hold onto but this?

'In the hands of a true demon', that is what was said. Why? I knew it wasn't over and I didn't know what to expect. But I did know one thing. That book, Abby, Ketheras, Balthezar, Laylan and myself all were connected somehow. Abby told me once of Laylan's destiny to find Adamar, a man who was the holder and protector of that book. Here I was with the book and Abby dreamed of Laylan. Did this all mean something? Were we all truly connected by some mystickal web spun by the G.o.ds? Was there some grander plan that we didn't know about? Does everything happen for a reason? Looking at my hand, at my fingertip, the one that Lothair had cut for my blood just brought up another question as it was completely healed. How?

I fell asleep with these questions spinning around in my mind. The final and biggest one being; will we ever find the answers? And when?
