"Why am I doing this?" I asked Ethan on this rather warm summers day.
"Trust me, I'd rather Kaylee be here like normal but the fact that she's ill means we needed someone to replace her."
"So why was I chosen? Why not pick someone that works here?"
"Well, it was kinda last minute so no one could show up. Kaylee was asked to find someone who wasn't busy and it just so happened that you are never busy."
I hate how right he is. I wish I was busying. If only I was good at coming up with excuses then maybe I wouldn't be stuck in this mess.
"So." Ethan began to speak. "I'll give you the basic rundown of how things work."
Ethan spoke for about 5 minutes explaining how this warehouse worked. It wasn't anything too fancy as this place seemed kinda rundown. It was surprisingly popular around Christmas time but it wasn't anything special. From the outside, it looked as if it was run by a family where the oldest member always sits at the front all day on a little stool reading a newspaper. Maybe that's why no one comes here.
I was situated on the front tills, waiting for customers. I only had to work for 5 hours and I was getting paid so it wasn't that bad. All I had to do was sit on this little stool and wait. If I ever got bored I could also read a newspaper that they just so happen to have.
My human interaction skills weren't the best. I could handle most males as long as they graciously speak to me. If they start raising their voices at me then I can't guarantee that I won't start crying. Once the crying starts it will get uncomfortable for the both of us.
The biggest problem with me is how I speak to females that I've never met before. I'm not saying that I'm awkward, but I'm awkward. I mean just look at me. I'm even awkward around girls I've known for a few years. Luckily for me, Ethan also works here. I did want to take his job and hide in the back but I lost rock paper scissors.
Ethan did hand me a sheet of paper with a guide on how to talk to girls, from a quick glance it seemed fine, but I can't imagine ever needing to use this.
Ding-ling.
Ah, a customer and they are female. From the looks of things, they seem to be around my age. Although, on the inside, I'm packing like h.e.l.l during winter. On the outside, I've never been more relaxed. I don't want to have to turn to Ethan's c.r.a.ppy advice, so I'll save it as a last resort.
"h.e.l.lo. How can I help." I asked with my best retail smile.
"Oh, I'm just looking for something."
"If you need any help, just ask."
Well, this is awkward. I didn't think I'd have to rely on the sheet already. Let's see what it says.

Step 1: Smile.
That seems easy, I've been doing that.
Step 2: Don't be persistent.
This seems interesting. This is actually some good advice. How long did it take for him to write this?
Step 3: Don't use the finger guns.
This third step just seems obvious, although I do understand that sometimes it is awkward and you can't contain yourself from firing off.
Step 4: Don't ask about her personal life, let her mention it first.
This seems more like a guide to dating then working? There must be a story as to why this is on here.
"Hey… Em…" The girl approached the tills and asked. "Have you got any vacuum cleaners."
Step 5: Always act like you know what you are doing.
"Of course! We have several various vacuum cleaners. If you give me the item number I can go and get one from the back!"
Lucky for me, I'm excellent and pretending to know things.
"Oh?" She said. "Here is the number."
She handed me a piece of paper with an 11 digit number on it. I didn't know that we had numbers that long.
"Let me just go check in the back."
I spent a few minutes searching but couldn't find anything. By the time I got back, she had already left. At first, I was worried that she stole from us so I immediately checked the tills. All the money was there.
"How strange," I said looking at the number again.
"What's up?" Ethan said.
"Some girl just gave me a fake number for a vacuum cleaner. I guess she was trying to play a prank on me."
"Yeah, that's happened to me before when on the tills. They always vanish before I get back and never see them again."
"Maybe this place is haunted," I said jokingly but also slightly worried myself.
"That would probably make working here a bit more fun," Ethan said.
"I hope Kaylee feels better for the trip next week."
"Oh?" I replied. "I'm sure she will. You looking forward to it?"
"Of course. It will be a great opportunity for us all. I can't wait to make memories together."
"Yeah, yeah. You going to confess?" I asked
"Errrrrrrrr… probably not…."
This dumb boy. What is wrong with him, why won't he confess?
"I just want to have fun on this trip." He said.
"Fair enough," I replied. "We may never be able to do something like this again."
"Don't think like that," Ethan said. "But, who knows what the future holds."
For the remainder of the day, work was slow. We had very few customers and talked about TV shows that we were currently watching. I asked Ethan to never make me work here again, but I had a feeling that he would force me back somehow. Although I guess working here wasn't so bad, I can see why Ethan likes working here so much.
