The farther they went down the hallway the darker the color of the shelves got, even the surrounding looked darker.
Normally players couldn't access this part of the library, it was clear when Reynold unlocked three kinds of locks to access the hallway, not to mention disabling the magical alarm as well, he took a note to look into this kind of spell.
"Curious I see, it's a good trait for a mage. But always remember, curiosity killed the cat, Hahaha." Reynold laughed, but Kyle didn't find it amusing.
As they walked down the hallway Reynold kept saying weird remarks, but Kyle grew bored of it and ignored him completely. He could spot fewer and fewer shelves until all the was left are doors, locked ones of course.
"Don't worry I'm just joking, when did the young generation become so stiff? Anyway, here we are. This is my private collection so feel free to satisfy your desire, the one for knowledge of course."
Facing them was a large block door with some white sentences written in a language Kyle couldn't recognize. Reynold touched the door and it split into two parts, slowly sliding into the wall.
"Once you finish, you can use the teleportation platform, it will directly take you to the garden. You are a smart one, so you must wonder why we walked all the way when we could teleport. There isn't a good reason, well apart from the fact that frequent teleportation for someone with a weak body like you can result in your body dissolving into particles that will endlessly float in empty s.p.a.ce. Nothing to worry about but it could be mildly unpleasant, for me, you won't even feel it." Reynold chuckled and left.
Kyle quickly entered the room, he didn't know if the door is going to close like the electric doors in the real world.
The room was relatively small and had two shelves, one at each side of the room. Facing the entrance was a desk paired with a chair and a small stone platform with ancient looking characters.
Kyle studied the platform carefully but he couldn't understand the weird characters engraved on it. Without Reynold's remark, he would have mistaken it for a normal stone platform, not that you can usually find them in study rooms.
He then looked at the shelves and found out the books were separated for a reason. The books on the right shelf were mainly about magic theory while the books on the left shelf focused on broader subjects like the history of magic and an encyclopedia of magic beasts.
After scanning the right shelf for a book related to earth magic he settled with one called 'Rocks for Rookies'. He sat comfortably on the chair and opened the book, it was time to dig in.
After reading all of the books related to the earth element, he had a basic understanding of the element.
Every element had its own specialty, and in this case it's stability. Earth stays the same for centuries and can survive many harsh conditions. Earth doesn't move on its own and it remains firm, it's the closest element to a physical object.
He then went on to read the books related to fusion, but very quickly he realized he had a problem. The reason why he couldn't fuse the different layers of spell matrixes is because each layer represents a rune in the language of magic.
Of course he couldn't fuse them, it's like trying to combine random words and hoping for a logical sentence.
In order to invent new spells, learning that language is the way to go. He searched for a book about it, but couldn't manage to find one.
Five minutes later he finally realized, he was looking at the wrong shelf. It only took him a few minutes to find the book on the left shelf.
While reading the book, he found out many different ways to use the runes, they were all around him and he only needed to take a look.
The alarm system and teleportation platform were both made by an inscription master, a profession that focuses on connecting runes together to create formations with different functions powered by magic cores.
There is also another profession called enchanter that adds magical effects to items like poison or fire damage, it works by using runes to convert some of the wasted energy to magical energy.
All of these skills: Inscribing, enchanting and inventing spells use the same basis, the magic language.
Don't let the name fool you, the magic language isn't like human language, in order to convey meaning you need much more than simply knowing the word or sentence.
Runes act differently based on many factors, and in order to create new skills a lot of learning and testing are required.
But that knowledge will also help him in becoming an enchanter and inscription master, something he wanted to so since reading about these professions.
He then gathered all the books related to rune fusion and set down, he had a lot to do.
