I woke up and got dressed in a hurry. Josh's family was visiting today and I wanted to make sure that the house was spotless for their arrival. Unlike mine, Josh's family was always loving and always very affectionate. I loved his mom, Denise; she was average height like me with dark brown short hair. Her eyes were deep brown, like Josh's, and her smile was warming.

His father, Leiman was very tall and thin with long shoulder length brown hair that was accompanied with white hair sporadically. His brown eyes were very welcoming behind his metal framed gla.s.ses and his full handlebar mustache always made me laugh when he kissed my cheek. We all used to joke around about how he resembled the actor, Sam Elliot. His hair and mustache and even his att.i.tude were similar.

I was looking forward to seeing them today so I hurried to get dressed and clean my house. Once everything was done I sat at the table with my pad and began writing about my dream. I had learned of Laylan's destiny and it angered me a little as I wrote that she didn't get a choice, it was written for her. It was a romantic idea but not one that I personally enjoyed. Plus, some part of me was hoping there would be a chance for Laylan and Luca.s.sius. I believed that there was something between them.

I sat reading what all I had written when I heard a familiar voice come from the front door which was now open. "Abs, Baby, everyone's here. Hope you're ready for us," Josh called out down the hallway.

Ever since my breakdown, Josh had been really cautious when he first came in, especially if he had company with him so I called back to him that I was indeed ready. I jumped up and gathered my papers and threw them into the drawer. I turned back towards the living room to take the shortcut to the front door. As I entered the room, Josh must've known which way I would take and lead his parents and another man in. I walked up and greeted Denise and Leiman warmly with hugs then looked over to this taller man.

"Abby, this is my cousin, Adam," Josh introduced him.

"Oh, pleasure to meet you," I said politely offering my hand. He was tall like Leiman and thin. His coal black hair was longer than Josh's but still short enough that he spiked it straight up above his handsome face. His complexion was fair and light, almost a perfect pale under his jet black hair. But what caught my attention were his eyes. They were bright, brilliant blue with dark eyelashes that lined perfectly to make them stand out. He reached out and accepted my hand and it was extremely warm in my own, but not sweaty like most warm hands would've been.

"Pleasure is all mine," he replied with the same warm smile that the rest of the family had. I looked up into his eyes and felt a warm energy spread through my arm, across my chest and outward to my fingers, toes and my head.

"Well, Abby, did you need any help with the food?" Denise asked with that smile I loved.

"Actually," I began, "I pretty much have absolutely nothing done for dinner, so yes, I would love some help." I smiled back at her.

"Alright, what are we cooking, dear?" she asked excitedly, Denise always loved to cook with me, so many times I would wait for her to get there to start cooking. I always thought it was to get away from Josh and Leiman's nonstop macho rambling.

I motioned Denise to the kitchen and she more than willingly obliged. We got to the kitchen and began to look through to find something to cook. "So, Josh told me, you have been having a hard time lately. He didn't go into detail but said you hadn't really been yourself."

My jaw dropped at the information that Denise was spilling. "He told you?" I stammered.

"Well, he wouldn't tell me what the cause was or really how you were having a hard time." She looked into my eyes as she asked quietly, "Are you pregnant?" a faint smile touched her face at the word.

I let out my breath in a laugh. "No, Mom, I'm not. At least, not as far as I know." I thought about it a moment as I looked into my mother-in-law's inquisitive face. "No, I've been having some really weird and sometimes scary dreams. They stay on my mind a lot and sometimes they get to me," I said quietly so that she was the only person to hear me. "But enough about me, how have you been doing?"

"Fine," she proceeded to tell me about Leiman and her little fis.h.i.+ng expeditions, how they were remodeling the house and how she had taken him to the doctor for his heart. I listened intently as she spoke, laughing at the funny parts and feeling concern in my heart for Leiman's doctor visits that were becoming quite frequent. From time to time we could hear the laughter floating in from the living room as the three men chatted.

Denise got quiet after a while and I couldn't help asking, "So, who is Adam?

"Oh, that's right you never got the chance to meet Adam, did you?"

"No, not until today," I admitted.

"Well, you remember my sister and Brother-in-law, Liza and Aiden?"

I thought about it for a moment and ran through the files of people I had met from Josh's family. Finally I pulled up Aiden; he was tall like Adam. He had light sandy brown hair but it was kept short. He had a contagious laugh and welcoming smile like the rest of the family. "Oh, yeah," I replied once I had retrieved a face in my mind. "Wasn't he at our wedding?"

"Yep, Adam is their son," Denise answered. "He'd never met you because he was busy in company mergers when your wedding took place. He and Josh haven't seen each other in nearly five years, so now it's probably like having two kids in there." She laughed and I couldn't help but laugh with her.

We finished cooking dinner for the five of us and set the table. Denise called the boys to the table and they all filtered into the room.

It was a loud dinner with everyone telling stories of the past, which were mostly about Josh and Adam's childhood and adolescent years. We were all laughing and enjoying the conversations.

I noticed Adam's eyes flickered with joy and our eyes met. I felt a strange pull deep inside as if something was pulling at my energy. I thought that I saw the same in his eyes but turned back to Josh to hear the story he was telling now.

"So, how's work, Adam?" Josh chimed innocently.

"Oh, well, I decided to take a much needed vacation. I was getting too stressed and ended up getting injured so I decided to take a leave of absence," he said seriously and chuckled in the end.

"Injured? How did you get injured?" Josh asked.

Denise chimed in asking, "What happened, Adam?"

"What kind of an injury?" Leiman asked.

"It's nothing," Adam began with a solemn look across his face. "I just figured it would be a good time to have some 'me' time." He finished with a fake smile that was apparent. He noticed in everyone's faces that no one had bought his smile, including me, and he quickly changed the subject. "So, Josh, when are you and Abby gonna have some kids? You two have been married for what three years? What are you two waiting for?" He chuckled at the fact that his diversion had worked as Denise and Leiman both looked at Josh and my faces.

"Well, we haven't actually sat down and talked about that. Right now isn't really the best time though," Josh answered and I peered deep into his eyes and could feel the concern in him for my well-being.

"Why isn't it a good time?" Leiman asked harmlessly.

I didn't want Josh to feel strange about explaining the real reason, so I spared him of that and answered for him. "Well, for almost a year now I have been having very odd and realistic dreams. I keep having them and they get pretty intense for me." I paused and watched their faces for a response.

"What kind of dreams?" Adam asked.

"So, dreams make it a bad time?" Leiman asked.

"Well, yeah, you should have seen the dream or should I say nightmare, that I had two months ago. It was h.e.l.lish and I practically had a nervous breakdown from it."

"My G.o.d, Abby, what was your dream about to cause a breakdown?" Denise asked concerned.

I sighed at that question and glanced at Josh to ask with a look if I should go into detail. He squeezed my hand and nodded his head slightly. I turned back to Denise and answered, "A demon attack." I paused for a moment then continued, "I saw a man get attacked by a demon. I saw the whole thing. The man, the gashes that appeared from his shoulders down to the small of his back, I saw a book, the black book of Lucifer, actually. I even accidentally broke a snow globe in his room."

At that, Adam's head snapped up and he looked at me. His face went pale and I couldn't quite make out what was in his eyes.

"A demon?" Denise grimaced as she spoke the word.

"Yes, a demon. I looked it up on the internet and discovered that his name is Balthazar. He's an extremely powerful and strong demon," I finished. My glance jumped from Denise to Leiman then to Adam. His eyes were gazing at the table but not seeing anything. We all sat in silence for a moment as we all tried to change the subject. I could tell that n.o.body was comfortable with the direction that our conversation had turned.

"Well," I chimed noticing that everyone was done eating. "Who wants dessert?" I smiled my cheerful smile that always could calm people and began gathering everyone's plates.

"What's for dessert?" Leiman was the first to speak.

"I made some fudge brownies yesterday and I have vanilla ice cream," I answered as I circled the entire table and took Adam's empty plate.

"Thank you," he mumbled so quietly I barely heard him. I noticed that he was stiff and sitting straight up. He didn't look at me as I stood there looking at him.

"Oh, Abby, fudge brownie sundaes? You really do know how to win your Ol' mother-in-law over, don't you?" Denise laughed as she stood and rubbed her stomach. "You know I want some dessert." She walked around the table to Leiman and playfully punched him in his arm. "And I know the old man wants some."

"Heck, yeah," Leiman announced as he stood, "I just have to use the facilities first."

"You got it, old man," Josh teased.

Everyone laughed except Adam. He still sat there not seeing anything yet staring at something. I had already put the brownies in the oven to warm as I called out to him.

"Adam, would you like some dessert?" I waited a few seconds for a reply that didn't come.

"Dude!" Josh called to him as he moved his hand in front of Adam's face, breaking off his endless stare.

It seemed to have worked because Adam snapped out of it and looked at Josh. "Sorry, what?"

"Abby, was asking if you wanted a fudge brownie sundae," Josh told him. I could hear the confusion in his voice as he relayed my question to Adam.

"Yeah, sure, I would love one. I just need to wash my hands first. Where's your restroom?" Adam answered and stood from the table holding his hands out as if they were covered in something.

"Here I'll show you," Leiman said at the doorway of the kitchen. He turned back out toward the hallway and Adam followed behind him.

"Is he okay?" I asked Denise quietly.

"I don't know. I've never seen him act like that before." Denise answered.

"He looked spooked of something then he just zoned out," Josh quietly added as he walked closer to Denise and me.

"I hope it wasn't something I said," I looked at Josh, then Denise.

They both looked at each other than to me. "No, Adam is a workaholic. He gets that way when he starts thinking about work. He's just like that," Josh a.s.sured me, though somehow I knew it had to do with me.
