I stayed afloat looking at him as he gazed dreamily into my eyes. He seemed off in his own little world.

"Well, are we going? Or are we gonna float here all day?" I spouted off playfully. At that, Josh seemed to snap back to reality.

"Oh, yeah, well, let's go," he turned and began swimming toward the island. The raft tied securely at his ankle, dragging it behind him. I swam and caught up to him. We continued swimming side by side toward our romantic getaway.

I could feel the cool water flowing down my body and legs as I moved. As I swam images began to circle in front of my eyes. I could see women in beautiful, clear, blue water. Their vibrant golden blond, earthy brown, fierce red and midnight black hair s.h.i.+ned in the bright sun. These women, though looking human, jumped and skimmed the surface of the water. As they did I could see the true difference between them and myself. Their scaly tailfins s.h.i.+mmered orange, blue, green and pink in the sun. I followed them moving my feet together and continued swimming toward the sh.o.r.e.

"Abs, slow down. I can't swim that fast," I heard Josh call from behind me. The water began to darken to its normal color. The women had disappeared into the water and the sky. I stopped and turned toward Josh, paddling my feet to stay afloat.

"Sorry, Babe, I kinda got lost in thought." A giggle escaped from my staggered breaths.

"It's ok; I just didn't want to get separated," he said out of breathe.

When we reached sh.o.r.e, Josh pulled the raft onto the sand and untied the rope from his ankle. As I was standing, waiting for a towel, I tilted my head up toward the sun with my eyes closed and basked in the warmth on my face. The warm breeze blew against my face and it wrapped around me blowing against my back and up through my hair. I thought for a moment that I had heard what sounded like hoof steps surrounding me.

I quickly opened my eyes and looked around. The only thing or person on the sh.o.r.e with me was Josh, who was now standing next to me with my towel in his hand. He had his own wrapped around his waist.

"Baby, you okay?" Josh looked at me with concern on his face.

"Yeah," I answered quickly. "I'm sorry; I was enjoying the sun light a little too much." I giggled and reached for the towel in his hand. "Thank you, Babe."

"Here let me," Josh said as he unfolded and wrapped the towel over my shoulders. He wrapped his arms around me and whispered in my ear, "I love you, Abby."

"I love you, too." I leaned back against his body and rested my head against his shoulder. "Thank you for this. I really think that this is what I needed, time away." The breeze began to blow off of the ocean as we stood there. A slight s.h.i.+ver made its way up my back from the sudden temperature drop, though it only changed by a few degrees. I stood there in his arms looking out at the sea, welcoming the warmth of his body.

"You hungry?" he whispered.

I lifted my face and turned around in his arms to face him. "I sure am, after that swim." I laughed as I motioned out at the boat and wrapped my arms around his stomach.

He lightly kissed the tip of my nose and turned back toward the raft that was on the sh.o.r.e. He grabbed the basket of food and walked back to me. He set it down behind me and began unpacking it. He started with a large blanket that had originally been stored in a closet at the house. I recognized it as an old military style blanket that my uncle had given me; I had never used it on the bed because it was itchy to my skin. I watched as he moved the basket to the blanket and continued to unpack its contents. He pulled out some bread, peanut b.u.t.ter, and grape jelly. I couldn't help but to think about the fact that he was going to make my favorite sandwich, I never did quite grow out of the peanut b.u.t.ter and jelly sandwich stage of my life.

"Ah, you're so sweet. You brought my favorite," I said as I knelt down on my knees, allowing my towel to fall to the ground. I reached over and grabbed a canister with a plastic knife and some napkins. "How many do you want, Sweetie?"

"Just one to start with," he answered as he reached for the bread.

We sat in silence making and eating our sandwiches. When we were done, we put all of our stuff back into its place in the basket. Josh scrambled to his feet and turned back toward me. I outstretched my hand and he grabbed it to lift me off of the ground. We began walking down the beach, the warm sand almost hot under my bare feet.

"So anymore dreams? I saw you writing this morning?" Josh asked me inquisitively.

I took a brief moment to put my words together. "Actually," I began. "Laylan and Luca.s.sius were fighting. Actually, not fighting, it was more so sparring. It was like Laylan had been training to beat Luca.s.sius. Because when she did, everyone stood and applauded. She seemed very happy that she had won, so I am a.s.suming it was like a rite of pa.s.sage or something like that," I spit out in a single breath.

His eyes filled with wonder and his mouth gaped open a little. "Wow, really, I wonder why."

"I don't know, but they were all congratulating her on a job well done. I'm guessing Luca.s.sius was the best fighter.

"Ah, that would make sense. Who is Luca.s.sius, again?"

I giggled under my breath at my endearing husband. I could understand how it could all be a bit confusing with all the names. I had to remind myself that just because I somehow knew everything about everyone, didn't mean that he did. "Luca.s.sius is Greagan and Gomorrah's son. Remember?"

"Yeah, I think." His face fell as he seemed to go over all of the names in his head.

We walked in silence for a moment. I kept trying to think of something casual to talk about but my mind kept wandering to the mermaids in the water. Finally, I figured if I talked about it then maybe I could get it off of my mind. "Um, earlier, while we were swimming up here, I had a vision." I paused for a moment to read his expression at that.

"A vision?"

"Yeah, but it wasn't quite like the dreams. I could almost feel the exhilaration of the swim in a new way. I saw." I stopped trying to find sane words that would make sense. "Well, I saw mermaids swimming with me."

At that he stopped walking and looked over at me. His eye brows furrowed as he thought about what was just said. I s.h.i.+fted my weight from one leg to the other trying to center myself.

Finally, he spoke, "Wow, so now there are mermaids? That's cool." He smiled down at me and I felt a wash of relief over me.

I nodded my head and peered into his eyes. "Yeah, well, that is enough about that. I am beginning to think that I am losing my mind. They start off as a dream that is always the same, and now they are sprouting out building a whole world around Laylan. It's all I can think about anymore. So let's talk about something else," I finished my request and confession and smiled a coy, little smile at him.

He smiled back and agreed. He began to walk again and I followed his lead. "Well, Mitch.e.l.l and Veda want to come to dinner this week. Veda is missing you. She's been watching her nephew the last two weeks." He chuckled to himself at the thought. "Mitch said that Eric has been driving her crazy." He paused again and followed up his thought, "does Friday sound good?"

"Actually that sounds perfect. I could use the company," I sighed. "No offense, but sometimes I need company from another woman. You know besides the woman in my head that is taking over." I giggled.

"None taken, I understand that. We guys are the same way," he announced, and then laughed to himself. "Not that we have other men inside our heads."
