His mother barely made enough money for them to eat at night. Sometimes their mother would even go without food so they could eat. At the age of ten Rayden got the opportunity to do some jobs. It paid enough for him and his sister to get through school and sometimes he even got enough money for some sweets for him, his sister and mother.

He wasn't unhappy. He was well aware of what he was doing but who would suspect a kid? His mother was a kind human being and tried her level best for her children. She even tried saving up for birthdays for them so that they could have something nice to eat and have a present. Best of all was, her mother never drank or smoked, though she did get agitated when Radley didn't do his homework.
His mother was well aware of what Radley was doing. She constantly tried to stop him but she knew she couldn't truly stop him. His sister is a year and a half younger than him and the apple in his eye. Radley's parents got separated when he turned five.
His father was abusive to his mother and at times would beat her pretty badly. Nothing to the point of going to the hospital and nothing visual, but he would use a belt to beat her.
One day Radley did something to infuriate his father. His father beat him so badly that his eyes were swollen for days.
That was the last straw with his mother who opted for a divorce, but his father was a religious man and refused. After some serious negotiations, he succ.u.mbed. He said that he would leave them never to return.
He kept to his word. He gave them nothing not even child support. He went on to remarry to a woman who had two daughters. Radley only met them once and already he disliked them.
This went on for years and one day not long after Radley had turned fifteen a great cataclysm ripped through the world. It claimed the lives of millions of people around the globe. An energy wave that basically liquidized people, turning them into some kind of glowing red mush.
That day Radley came home to find his sister and mother in a pile close to each other. He was the only one that happened to survive. It broke him.
He was always trying so hard to help his mother and in an instant, it was all gone.
He sat there for days just staring at the piles. Somebody knocked on the door. It was a policewoman. Blonde hair and a bit overweight who had to break down the door to see him sitting there in the dark.
This ripped into her heart, but this wasn't the first time she saw something like this, "Hey, kiddo. You okay?"
He turned to her with a sunken, malnourished face. He hadn't eaten or drank for three days. He was basically a skeleton.
She went up to him and gave him a chocolate bar. Radley stared at it as if it was alien and foreign. He lost all sense of normalcy.
She unwrapped the chocolate and took a small bite, "Its chocolate, but just a plain one. The endorphins will make you feel better…Please eat."
He took the chocolate and had a bite. For some crazy reason, the chocolate tasted really good and he scarfed it down. He gave his best puppy eyes but it only looked creepy in his unhealthy state. He asked in a slightly hoa.r.s.e tone, "Could I please have some more?"
She smiled and gave him another one, "I am going to take you to the hospital now."
"No! We can't afford it…" It dawned on him that he was alone now, "I mean, I can't afford it."
"I take it you're alone? Do you have any relatives?"
He had to think for a bit, "My father. I think he still lives…somewhere."
"What's his name?"
"Severus, Severus Scott."
"What is your name?"
"Radley, I wanted to change my surname to my mother's, but I never had the money."
"What was her name?"
He pointed to one of the puddles with a bony finger, "My mother's name was Charlotte Landry."
He pointed to the other puddle, "My sister's name was Beth Scott."
She lifted him up in her arms. He was basically all bone and weighed but a few kilograms, more than enough for her to carry him to the car.
They arrived at the hospital and got Rayden treated. It took him three weeks to recover. He never did get the friendly police lady's name.
Now he wasn't sure what was going to happen to him. Some ladies arrived and took him to an orphanage. Truth be told he would have been better off alone, but he couldn't care less. Live to him had little meaning. He even got into a fight one time purely by accident where the living snot was beaten out of him, but all he did was stand up. Dust himself off and went on his way, much to the a.s.saulters' surprise.
They actually left him alone after that.
A young girl saw this and ran up to him, "You okay?! You look so badly hurt!"
He smiled at her and waved it off, "I'm fine. Just a few scratches. It happens all the time."
"Like h.e.l.l, it doesn't! I am about to give them a piece of my mind…"
He grabbed her by the arm to stop her. He smiled again and told her something that sent chills down her spine, "I'm fine. If I can experience more pain then I currently have in my heart I will be happier. Anything to escape my heartache…anything."
A young man came up to him and slapped him upside the head, "Man, you're morbid. Be thankful you are still alive."
"Have you ever lost everything?"
"Why do you think me and my sister is here. The name is Allen. This is my sister Leanna."
He politely nodded, "Radley."
