"Wh" His words caught in his throat as he saw the tell-tale signs of tears staining their faces despite their attempts at masking it with their deep hoods. After a brief moment of confusion, it dawned on him.
Despite being in similar circ.u.mstances, their perspectives where completely different. Although this was his chance to come home and represented freedom for all three of them, the boys had left behind everything and anything they had previously known when they got onto that carriage. He had come back to everything he had left.
Despite all the hards.h.i.+ps they had encountered within the fragment, it was still their home for the entirety of their lives. Stepping through the gate severed their connection to not only the negative feelings, but their chances of once again seeing their mother or anything else familiar to them.
"Make sure to stick with me." He patted their shoulders before walking forward at a moderate pace, making sure they had time to take in anything of interest. As they their way through the wide streets, the conversation and bustle was overwhelming for both youths, causing them to stay right on the heels of Chance in fear of losing him in the chaos.

After getting past the initial fear, the streets completely mesmerised them.
Chance was looking around with just as much vigour as the twins as they looked upon the food stalls, vendors and shops which lined the streets. The only comparison they could make was to the dinner rush within the camp but still a few times more bustling than that still.
The twins tears had long since dried, leaving nothing but dried marks on their cheeks, yet their sense of calm was yet to be restored. With their hoods up, pa.s.sers-by would only manage glimpse at their faces on occasion which would be enough to startle them, leaving them rooted to the spot with gawking expressions.
The reactions of these people didn't even warrant a glance from the twins after having long since become accustomed to these expressions while living within the camp. Continuing to look at their surroundings with the majority of their faces hidden, they paid no attention to those around them as the pair remained captivated by their new environment.
"I don't know where to begin. I honestly owe you both my life." Without turning around or expecting an answer, Chance began speaking almost to himself as the others trailed behind.
Even after a pause, he Chance wasn't able to think of any comforting words. Thus he instead began to feed them a steady stream of information about the world they had stepped into, in an attempt to draw their attention away.
"Those lights are made of a rock called sun stone. They are able to absorb and store light around them, releasing it whenever it gets dark. They are often used in street lights but, for those who can afford it, they will often use them indoors too. Just remember to charge them when you get a chance.
"Most of the food you'll see here is farmed or hunted within the area around the city. You can buy them with coins, they act like the favours I explained within the camp. There are copper, silver and gold with each being worth a hundred of the former.
"Do what you can to hide your appearances, you won't be targeted openly but there are always those who discriminate against those who are different. Of course, there are also those with strange tastes… you've already met Sir.
"No matter the situation, don't reveal your powers to anyone. Even more so, no one can know about the essence fruit or we may as well just kill ourselves now.
"Don't drink the water from the ca.n.a.ls, it looks fine, but you never know what's in it. There are public taps in most of the squares which you can use to get purified water.
"Don't go anywhere with anyone you don't know. For any reason. No matter what they offer or tell you. Especially women and children.
"Try not to walk in the very centre of the roads, there aren't many, but carriages and mounts are likely to pa.s.s through.
"Avoid anyone with a tattoo on the back of their palms or their wrists. It doesn't matter what the tattoo is of."
Information concerning locations and survival tips, along with the unspoken rules of city life, became clear one by one as Chance patiently explained with only the odd question from the boys. Throughout this time, they hadn't stopped walking as they casually strolled through the wide streets for over two hours.
For this journey, Chance had intentionally led them along the busiest route towards their destination in order to have the best first impression while allowing him to give them as much information as possible. He spoke confidently, knowing there shouldn't be an issue with this information dump due to the twins' freakish ability to absorb and retain knowledge.
"What is a fragment? Are we actually out of it or is this still inside one?" Loki asked with his brows lightly furrowed beneath his hood. As far as he could tell, the world he found himself in now was practically in no way different to the fragment they had been residing in all their lives. The only differences being the stars above them and the ma.s.sive change in population.
"To be honest, I can't tell you all of the specifics, but guess from what I've heard... A fragment is a piece of the world that has been torn off or somehow become separated from the main world, namely this one.
"So, with this being the real world, if you imagine a bubble floating in the air then that would be a fragment. The s.p.a.ce within has originally come from this world, but it is separated by a kind of barrier, like the bubble.
"There are ways for people to gain access to the insides of the bubbles, but they have to be able to open a hole in the barrier without popping the bubble itself. The gate we just left from is that entrance to the inside of the bubble. Understand?"
"So that was the inside of the bubble and now that were out, this is the real world?" Loki confirmed.
"That's right." Chance nodded his affirmative.
"How do you know?"
"…"
"…"
"How do I know what?"
"That this is the real world."
"…"
"Isn't it possible that we were in a bubble within a bubble? How do you know that this isn't another isolated s.p.a.ce?"
"He's got a point, I was swimming in the river one time and there was a bubble inside a bubble. Yep, I saw it myself." Rykar chimed in offhandedly while still glancing at the scenery.
"It doesn't work like that, bubbles can't exist within bubbles." Chance replied to Loki while pretending he hadn't heard a word from Rykar.
"That's not true, I've seen bubbles within bubbles too." Loki persisted while casting a suspicious glance at Chance.
"I… I don't know. We can take a trip to the library one of these days and see if we can find something on it. Good enough?" Without his hood, fine beads of sweat could be seen forming on Chance's forehead as the pressure of the questioning began to get to him.
"You remember we can't read right?"
"I know! It doesn't even matter, seeing as you two suck up information like a fat kid in a custard factory! I can just teach you two. Now are you going to let me finish or do you still want to b.i.t.c.h about bubbles?" Chance finally lost it, unable to contain himself against Loki's probing.
Hearing the comparison, the twins stopped in place for a second as their minds and faces twisted at the image they conjured up.
