As I was looking around I could see mountains on either side of us. We must be in some kind of valley I thought to myself. But apart from the mountains itself the valley floor which we were on was really flat, but was covered in short yellow gra.s.s. Though the gra.s.s being yellow means that it is dying but at the same time it is odd that it is dying due to the fact that there has been lots of rain recently. The only notable feature apart from the flat gra.s.sland was a rock outcropping about a ten minutes walk behind us.
Aviel the captain walked up to where our battalion was in the column. "Our orders are that we need to disperse and find the lost supplies. You will split into companies and search the areas allocated to you. First company you will search in east from here, second company you will search south from here. Me and the rest of the second company began to head south to search which meant that we had to go back where we just came from.
We all began to walk back slowly looking around not seeing anything. "So Leo…," the mustering call interrupted what I had to say. We all looked at each other feeling confused at why we had been recalled minutes after us all leaving. "We better get moving to get back, don't want the captain to lose his nut again. Isn't that right Jason," Jason just gave me a slight nod of his head. Jason never really talked much at all. We all joked that he was mute until he told us all to shut our mouths. It didn't long for us to get back.
The captain looked fl.u.s.tered and a bit scared. "All of you into battle formation quickly!" We all were confused at the order to get ready for battle but our training showed itself at that time as we all formed up with the other battalions in a ma.s.sive wall of bodies. Those at the front placed their s.h.i.+elds down which were rectangular. This enabled us to form a wall. Then spears would come out from them and the first three ranks behind them. The last two ranks would have their spears left pointing upwards. I was in the last rank, on the left side of the formation. As I was wondering why we had been made to form a battle formation I then felt the ground began to tremble. It was like when there were loads of cattle being moved around. Then in the distance I could see a dark blob appear.
The blob slowly got closer and closer. Although I couldn't make out what they were yet there must have been around a quarter of our total number. Though the officers that I could see all were pale and were slightly trembling which confused me a lot.
Then I could make them out as they were getting closer. They were around seven ft so taller than any of us. Also all had dark skin if not black. Their faces all looked like animals as well. Some of them looked like goats, some foxes and others even looked like cows. Their eyes were all blood red. Completely blood red. After seeing their eyes I finally worked out what they were. They were demons!
The equipment they had didn't look that bad though. Most were wearing a kind of animal hide. It didn't cover their whole body unlike our armour leaving vital points wide open to be attacked. They were all using a different kind of weapon it seemed. Though the weapons were all black and looked rather crudely made except for a few which looked like they had been forged rather than chucked together.
The majority of them were going for the centre of our formation with not as many breaking off to the sides towards where I was. The order to brace came out as they got closer. Every one tightened their grips and prepared to receive the charge. I could hear people calling out prayers to the G.o.d of war and some to the G.o.d of death. Then I couldn't hear anything except the sound of the demons feet smas.h.i.+ng into the ground. I also could hear the roar of the demons as they got closer it was like hearing a lion roar but a couple of hundered at once.
Then all I could hear was the bang, bang,Bang,Bang,BANG,BANG! SMAs.h.!.+ They then hit our formation or should I say went straight through it. At that point I heard the screams of pain that ripped through the air.
"Adoh snap out of it!" The yell from someone snapped me out the trance I had fallen into. "Charge!" With a roar we all counter charged the demons that were breaking through our lines. I grasped my spear and s.h.i.+eld tightly. I raced towards one demon that was more broken off from the rest. It had its back turned towards me, with a yell I stabbed out with my spear and the back of its neck that would kill it instantly. To my surprise it turned round, blocking my spear blow by smacking my spear to the ground. My hand hurt so much that I let go of the spear. The demon then swung his weapon straight towards my head.
Crack. I had managed to bring my s.h.i.+eld up intime to block the blow. But it was so strong it broke my s.h.i.+eld as well as then knocking me off my feet and sending me a few yards back. Looking up I saw the demon have a smile on its face as it dragged its weapon as it walked forwards towards me.
At that moment all the screams and roars in the battlefield went silent. It was like it was just me and the demon. It was walking towards me so slowly. I was trying to get my sword out of its sheath but it was stuck. Then a shadow covered me. I looked up to see the demon standing there above me. I closed my eyes waiting for death. "Sorry bro." I whispered that to myself as I heard the weapon coming down.
At that moment I was shovered along the floor. Then felt a hot liquid spray over me. Opening my eyes I saw Jason. He had saved me but now. "No…." I whispered.
His head had been split open by the strike off the demon. What surprised him was that he had saved me though. He barely spoke to me or anyone before and now he was dead. I was able to look around. All I saw was a one sided ma.s.sacre we were being butchered. As I was looking around I saw Leo being held by his head. Then with a squelch his head was burst. "NOOO!" Leo's death ignited something inside of me. I grabbed my sword and tore it out of its sheath. Then I got up looking at the demon that nearly killed me.
"May Noikany bless me."
