Elize was feeling better after she took a few gulps of the water. Although she was still feeling weak, the fresh water had somehow managed to energize her, even though it was only by a little. She bent down with cupped hands and pushed it into the stream. Hoping that it would work, she poured the water over her shoulder. As soon as the liquid touched her skin, she could feel tingling sensations all over. Slowly yet steadily, her wound started to heal. She sighed, relieved that her guess was right.

"Why are we here?" Elize asked, standing up.

Zack had brought them to clearing once again. This time, he had brought them closer to the huge cave from where the water seemed to be flowing out. The noise of the water was deafening, as the wide stream poured forth violently. Elize looked at the water curiously. Strangely she couldn't see the blue glow anymore, although she witnessed the magic of the water herself. She listened carefully to her surroundings. There was no voice apart from the birds chirping from the trees around them. She found it strange. Elize clearly remembered a sweet voice singing the prophecy the last time she was here. Was it because she was no longer a witch? She thought, with a disappointed look on her face.

"It's the safest place right now." Zack said, lowering himself on the gra.s.s a few steps behind her.

"Why so?" Elize asked, still staring at the water.

*cough cough*

Zack's coughs brought her attention back to him. Elize turned towards him in concern. Waving his hands to dismiss her worries, he opened his mouth to explain. Elize couldn't help but notice that something was off about him. His complexion was dull even under the sun.

"I'm sure that the wolves will be back for us once they've recruited more people. The water can hide our scent although I don't know how much it would work for yo-" Zack was unable to finish the sentence. He clutched the side of his torso tighly, a pained expression marring his face.

Alarmed at the sight, Elize ran back to her mate hurriedly.

"Zack! Are you okay?!" She asked, bending down next to him.

Beads of perspiration was forming on his forehead. His pallor was becoming ashen. His breaths were labored. There was no doubt about the fact that he was in much pain. Zack laid back on the gra.s.s, supporting himself with his elbows. Elize quickly put her hand underneath his back in order to support him. As soon as his back touched the ground, he screamed out in pain.

"Aaargh!!"

Zack turned towards his mate and grabbed her forearm. His grip on her was so tight that it physically hurt her not to scream out. She was only human at that point and her mate a werewolf. She knew that Zack was not even using a quarter of his strength, but it was becoming hard to bear. That was when she noticed it. His hand that grabbed her was covered in fresh blood. Her eyes followed the contours of his body until at last they landed on his chest.

"You're bleeding!" She exclaimed, desperately trying to straighten him.

There was a huge gaping wound extending to the sides of his torso. It was indistinguishably claws marks. His wolf's transformation didn't affect his healing?! Wasn't that how transformations are supposed to work?! Elize thought nervously.

Zack shook his head. "It's okay. I-" He paused, trying hard to breathe. "I'm fine." He said, a weak smile on his face.

"Of course you're not!"

"Babe.. hey."He said, trying to distract her.

It was of no use as Elize was hyperventilating at the moment. She couldn't hear anything around her. He sole focus was the wound on his torso. She took a deep breath and gathered her courage to apply pressure on it. But as soon as her hand made contact with it, it started bleeding more heavily.

"Oh no no no no.." She said shaking her head. Tears started spilling out of her eyes.

Why was this happening?! Why now when she could do nothing to heal him?! She hated being human! If only she had her powers, she could have stopped his bleeding. She could have saved her mate.

"Hey." Zack said weakly. Elize looked at him with teary eyes. She could see him smile at her. It only made her feel worse. Why was he trying to stay strong n front of her?! Why was he being nice to her?! She was the reason that he was in this state, she thought sadly.

Zack took a deep breath and reached out to her face. Elize bent down and placed the side of her face in his palm. With eyes full of love, he said, "I'm fi-"

Before he could finish the sentence, his hand dropped to the ground lifelessly. Zack's head lolled to the side, his eyes closing shut.

"No no no!! Zack!!" Elize screamed, grabbing his shoulder. "Zack stay with me!"

There was no reply. Zack's body was laying there on the sun kissed gra.s.s lifelessly. Blood pooled around his body, streaming out of the gaping wound. The deafening noise of the water made her unable to think. She was left alone in the midst of the forest, mourning for the lifeless mate laying in her arms. She screamed his name again and again to no avail.

"Someone help please!" She screamed, clutching his body to her chest.

A strong gust of wind suddenly blew from the opposite direction, sending a spray of the stream's water over them. Elize looked towards the stream in surprise. Why hadn't she thought of that before?! The water had healing properties! Maybe she would be able to save him if she could bring him towards the stream.

With a determined look, she got up from the ground and readied herself to pick him up. Raising both his hands, she turned around and hoisted him against her back. His weight was too much for her to bear alone. She swayed to the sides helplessly.

"Ngh!" She grunted. "Why is this man so heavy?" Elize complained, trying to steady herself.

She took a deep breath and took a step forward. Elize staggered to the side weakly. She knew that she had to be careful as she had not regained her full strength. She was still weak from the attack.

Just a little bit closer." Elize rea.s.sured herself, trying hard not to fall down.

With much effort she placed one foot in front of the other, dragging her mate along. Her eyes were focused on the edge of the water. That's it, it was only a few steps more. Using all her strength, she pushed forward, determined to reach the stream. It was a matter of life and death. As the bank grew closer, she felt relieved. Taking one last step towards the water, she relaxed trying to turn around to s.h.i.+ft Zack's weight towards her side. Elize grunted, as the weight of his limp body pushed against her right shoulder. She staggered back, only to place her feet on wet mud.

Before she could react, Elize found herself falling backwards into the water, Zack's body pus.h.i.+ng against her chest.

"AAAAaaaaaarrggggghhhhhhh!!" She screamed, clutching Zack against her body tightly.
