Chapter 712: Old Man And Dog
Professor Rudolf Wagner walked around the hospital happily like a little sheep that had eaten coffee beans. He refused to turn back no matter what anyone said.
The boss was still alive and judging from his voice, he seemed to be living very well. No one knew what kind of stimulation he had received but he was finally interested in the n.o.bel Prize.
This was especially good news.
In the past when he was in Sea City, Professor Rudolf Wagner still could not understand why Zheng Ren did not care about the n.o.bel Prize.
Was it because his level was not good enough? Definitely not!
In Sweden in front of Dr. Mehar, Su Yun’s long translation might be able to tell some of Zheng Ren’s thoughts.
But no matter what, the boss finally had the fighting spirit. The professor wandered around for half an hour before he decided to go out and find a pub to celebrate alone.
He let Little Oliver guard the ward to prevent any problems from happening to the patients after TIPS surgery. The professor walked out of Imperial Capital Hospital’s compound alone.
Although it was already past nine o’clock in the evening and it was already dark, the nightlife had just begun. There were quite a lot of people on the streets, even more than during the day.
Professor Rudolf Wagner was in a special mood. He walked leisurely on the road.
He was looking for a bar. He could not drink too much because there was still the operation tomorrow.
Then he would only drink three… Oh, no, he had to drink five bottles of beer. After that, he would go back to the hotel happily.
The professor walked aimlessly down the road. He was immersed in the joy that had yet to fade away.
This was a kind of enjoyment. In fact, it made Professor Rudolf Wagner happier than drinking.
The boss said that if he could win the n.o.bel Prize this year, then he would definitely get it. There would be no accidents at all. That was what the professor thought in his heart.
Success after success had left a deep mark in Professor Rudolf Wagner’s heart. The boss’s words proved things would definitely work out!
Tonight was so beautiful and the professor felt extremely happy.
As he walked, Professor Rudolf Wagner saw a lot of people crowded in front of him. It was not a crowd, but a line. The line was very long. After a few twists and turns, he could no longer see what was happening at the front.
Ever since Zheng Ren left, Professor Rudolf Wagner did not leave the Imperial Capital Hospital. He was so depressed that he used his work to numb himself. He did not want to remember anything, especially since Dr. Mehar would come to China to perform the second-stage coronary artery surgery soon.
Whenever he thought about it, Zheng Ren’s life would be unknown. The professor would feel that everything before his eyes was dark, and his life would be a lot dimmer.
However, today was different. He knew that his boss was still alive, and Professor Rudolf Wagner could hear from the phone that his boss had a desire for the n.o.bel Prize.
That was enough, wasn’t it?
What interesting things were these people doing? The professor enjoyed life curiously and was full of interest in new things.
He pa.s.sed by the winding long line and saw a donation box at the front. There were volunteers busy expressing their grat.i.tude.
Was this a charity donation? The professor was a little puzzled. Then he saw an old man in shabby clothes who looked like a beggar, walking over with his back hunched. Behind the old man was a crippled puppy.
The puppy was very sensible. It cautiously followed the old man like a guard, unwilling to leave him behind even half a step.
The old man did not go to the donation center directly. Instead, he came to the end of the long line and lined up with the dirty puppy.
Rudolf Wagner stopped in his tracks. He felt that everything in front of him was very novel. He was prepared to take a good look and then tell Chang Yue and Xie Yiren tomorrow.
The atmosphere had been very depressing recently. The professor could feel it.
He tried to make Chang Yue and Xie Yiren happy but every time, it was futile. Professor Rudolf Wagner estimated that he would tell them the news of the boss’s call tomorrow. Perhaps they would be happier?
Yes, definitely!
Standing in the distance, the professor saw the old man take out a hard, brick-like pancake from his arms. He pulled hard, breaking off a piece.
Yes, it was broken, not torn.
At such an old age, could he eat such a thing? The professor was a little puzzled.
Because he was getting older and older, the professor had said goodbye to many of the foods he liked to eat when he was young, even if it was quite troublesome.
The old man handed the big pancake to the puppy next to him. After that, he stood in line and ate the pancake while holding it.
The pancake was very hard. He took a hard bite before taking out a half-filled bottle of water and drank from it.
Just like that, he stood in line and ate with the puppy who was relying on him.
Professor Rudolf Wagner liked this kind of life. He even thought countless times that when he won the n.o.bel Prize and his life was complete, he would take his beloved violin and start wandering.
However, he definitely could not eat such a hard cake. The professor enjoyed the freedom of wandering, not having to live in the wilderness every day.
This old man, did he want to donate? It seemed that he could not even maintain his own life.
The old man was very silent and the puppy was very sensible.
It took a whole half an hour to eat the big pancake.
After half an hour, the old man was already close to the donation box. The professor thought it was ridiculous to stand here for half an hour instead of going to the bar and drinking beer to celebrate the boss’s return.
After another ten minutes, the old man came to the donation box. The staff was very surprised but he still handed the old man a bottle of water enthusiastically.
The old man refused with a smile. His face was full of wrinkles like a mountain. Each of the wrinkles was dirty with grease.
He took out a black bag that had been worn out and carefully opened it.
Pieces of change with a maximum value of five yuan were taken out.
The old man carefully smoothed out the money and piled it into a stack according to the value. Finally, he handed it to the staff.
Rudolf Wagner did not understand. He estimated that this money was only about twenty yuan. If converted into euros… It was completely unnecessary.
Was he donating? For the sake of the faraway place, the place where the old man might not go in his lifetime?
The staff put away the money and was very polite. One of the girls helped the old man away. After walking for more than ten steps, she said a few words to the old man and then bowed deeply.
The old man waved his hand. The smile on his face appeared brilliant and kind under the neon lights of the night sky.
The puppy seemed to know that it had finished the most important work of the day and began to run around the old man happily.
The hunched back gradually disappeared into the night, disappearing into the colorful city lights.
Professor Rudolf Wagner frowned. He seemed to have seen the boss’ figure and understand why the boss put down the n.o.bel Prize and just left to help.
Not only did he leave the n.o.bel Prize, but also the girl he loved.
Well, brother Yun probably thought so too.
Was that the case?
Rudolf Wagner looked back and saw that the long line had not shortened at all. It was still so long that one could not see the end of it.
He was silent. He had no intention of drinking to celebrate.
The professor lowered his head. He was a little confused as he wandered around the streets of the Imperial Capital under the cover of night.
