Su Wen was completely unmoved. She crossed her arms and stared at the two women. She knew trouble would come knocking when she asked Su Xiu to partner with He Yulan to sell steamed cakes. Once the news spread of how well the steamed cakes were selling in town, people would try to take advantage of her; such was greed.
Even if she had not asked Su Xiu to partner with He Yulan and chose to sell the steamed cakes herself, there would still be people who would eye her good fortune jealously. After all, she was turning a profit from the sale of steamed cakes. Who would not want extra money in their pockets? It was the same as the provisions shop that had opened a while ago, whereby a whole slew followed suit upon seeing how well that shop was doing.
It was the same principle with steam cakes, albeit it was far easier to start a business making steamed cakes than opening a provisions shop. All they needed was to get ahold of the recipe and the techniques she had used to make it.
However, Su Wen did not expect Zhang Chunxiang and Chen Guihua to be so thick-skinned. To think they had the nerve to show up and demand things from her!
It seemed the two had yet to learn their previous lesson!
“Little Wen, I won’t beat about the bush with you. Why didn’t you think of your uncle when you decided to do business?” Zhang Chunxiang asked, expressing heartache and disappointment at Su Wen’s lack of consideration. It was at this moment that Su Xuewu and Su Xueqiang arrived.
Su Wen’s wariness spiked. She knew she had to tread lightly where the two men were concerned, more so than if she had had to face Zhang Chunxiang and Chen Guihua alone.
Subconsciously, she took a step closer to Zhou Henyang.
“What’s wrong? Are you scared?” Zhou Hengyang teased, whispering in her ear.
“I’m not afraid.” She was not in a situation where she needed to fear for herself. Hadn’t life been difficult when she first transmigrated? Su Wen transmigrated into a new world and body without any memories of the original to help her. Why should she be afraid now if she had not been afraid then? Su Xuewu and Su Xueqiang were just more troublesome to deal with, that is all.
It caused Zhou Hengyang to frown.
“You’re not.” Zhou Hengyang blinked. “That’s good.”
“Of course.”
“Little Wen.” As soon as Su Xuewu arrived, he began to put on airs. He cleared his throat and did not bother to sit on the proffered stool. Instead, he looked around as if inspecting a subordinate’s work, only to find her lacking. Finally, he said, “I’m sure you’re busy making steamed cakes. I’ll have your Second Aunt drop by tomorrow to lend you a hand.”
Joy bloomed in Zhang Chunxiang’s otherwise dour expression.
“Your Third Aunt has nothing to do at home. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind helping out,” Su Xueqiang added quickly.
Chen Guihua was used to being lazy. She was not even willing to spend time on ch.o.r.es, so how could she be willing to work for Su Wen? She could not understand Su Xuewu’s intentions and almost put her foot down there and then. However, before she could do so, Su Xueqiang pinched her viciously, forcing her to keep her mouth shut.
“Are you dumb?” Su Xueqiang wanted to strangle Chen Guihua.
‘Is he trying to get me to steal the recipe,’ she wondered. ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ Chen Guihua’s eyes sparkled, having realized the plan. She could not wait to taste those delectable steamed buns. Instinctively, she glanced at Su Wen’s kitchen and sniffed the air. She did not notice Su Xueqiangs livid expression.
With all eyes on her, Su Wen smiled, bursting into laughter.
“Little Wen, what’s wrong?” Su Wen’s sudden cackling fit angered Su Xuewu. “Are you refusing to listen to me? When your father pa.s.sed away, he told me to take good care of you and your sisters.”
Meanwhile, at the dining table, Su Wen’s sisters were no longer in the mood to eat. They were so angry that they felt full.
While Su Qing, Su Xiu, and Fifth Sister could still grit their teeth and bear with their uncle’s blatant taunts, Little Sister Su and Sixth Sister were not so patient. This was especially so for Little Sister Su. Having spent plenty of time around Su Wen, Little Sister Su prided herself on how clever she had become. She was not the same ignorant little girl she once was.
When she heard Su Xuewu’s shameless words, she rushed out of the house and shouted in what seemed like a mix of anger and mischief.
‘You’re a bad man, Second Uncle..”
