“Okay!” Su Wen exclaimed, her stomach growling with hunger. She was in no mood to waste any more time.
Ever since her transmigration, one thing Su Wen struggled to adapt to was the daily routine of bathing and was.h.i.+ng her face. Thankfully, her family was diligent, and the presence of a well in their courtyard made it convenient to fetch water. Today, he had even prepared a towel for her, adding a touch of luxury to her morning ritual.
In the kitchen, Su Xiu was busy preparing a feast, and Fifth Sister was a.s.sisting her with the cooking fire. After Su Wen had finished was.h.i.+ng up, she peeked into the kitchen, marvelling at the sumptuous spread before her. Braised pork ribs, eggplant, stir-fried green peppers and edamame, a refres.h.i.+ng tomato and pig’s ear salad adorned the table.
Because there were many of them, each dish was in large portions.
There was a pot of braised carp dumplings, a delicacy made from fresh wild carp caught by the villagers, which had become one of Su Wen’s favourite dishes since her transmigration.
“Big sister, you’re awake!” Su Xiu greeted Su Wen with a smile as she entered the kitchen.
“Yes,” Su Wen replied, sneaking a piece of pig’s ear into her mouth. It was delicious. “Did you go to the village today?”
“Yes, brother-in-law is back. He went to the village to buy groceries,” Su Xiu informed her.
The sisters hold great respect for Zhou Hengyang. It’s fine if he’s not home for meals, but when he returns, they couldn’t be casual anymore.
In the morning, even though Big sister didn’t get up, Su Xiu asked her brother-in-law and he said that Big Sister didn’t sleep well last night. He mentioned that Big sister was exhausted from catching thieves in the middle of the night, so she didn’t disturb her. Instead, she took Fifth Sister to the village market to buy vegetables.
Su Wen gave Su Xiu a thumbs up. “Ah Xiu, you’re becoming more capable every day. The family relies on you. Meanwhile, I’m becoming lazier.”
“But big sister, you have more important matters to attend to!” Su Xiu replied, feeling content and proud of her responsibilities.
“By the way, where are Second Sister and Su Xue?” Su Wen noticed their absence.
“They’re busy cleaning up the vegetable garden. The second aunt trampled some of the seedlings, so they’re replanting them,” Su Xiu explained, her anger evident. “Big sister, we should confront the Second aunt this afternoon and make her compensate for the damage.”
Even Fifth Sister, who was usually quiet, couldn’t contain her frustration. “Big sister, do you know what we saw in the village today?”
“What did you see?” Su Wen asked, intrigued. Had they spotted someone remarkable?
“We saw Second aunt selling vegetables—vegetables stolen from our house last night,” Su Xiu said while was.h.i.+ng the used baskets, plates, spoons, and other utensils thoroughly, and then putting them in the cupboard. Her voice filled with anger. “I’ve never met anyone as shameless as Second Aunt.”
“And what’s more surprising is that she was badly beaten last night, yet she still dared to go out today.” Su Wen was dumbfounded by Zhang Chunxiang’s audacity.
She never thought Zhang Chunxiang was such shameless.
“That’s her. Otherwise, how else could she get away with it all these years?” Fifth Sister remarked, shaking her head in disbelief. “When Second Aunt was selling vegetables, she claimed she was poor and that her sister-in-law and mother-in-law were jealous of her thriving vegetable garden. She even said they were envious of her fresh produce. It’s unbelievable!”
Su Wen was left speechless, she was shocked by Zhang Chunxiang’s perspective on life.
“That’s why other people’s vegetables couldn’t be sold at the market, only hers,” Su Xiu added, filled with regret. “Big sister, why didn’t I think of selling vegetables in the market myself? If I did, I could earn more money..”
