The two of them stood at the door, deeply engrossed in their conversation. Su Xue, who had been was.h.i.+ng dishes by the well, overheard their plans to buy train tickets to the county town. Immediately, she inquired, “Brother-in-law, which train tickets are you planning to purchase?”
“I checked before coming back. Capital University’s reporting date is August 30th. We will depart on the 30th and return early morning on the 31st. We can a.s.sist the Fifth sister with the formalities on the same day,” Zhou Hengyang explained thoughtfully, his demeanour calm and organized.
“Isn’t that day after tomorrow?” Su Xue marvelled, realizing how swiftly time had pa.s.sed. It was already the 28th.
“Yes,” Zhou Hengyang affirmed briefly, his words precise and to the point. Despite his close relations.h.i.+p with the family, he remained a man of few words.
“Fourth sister, when is your reporting date?” Su Wen asked.
“I’m scheduled for September 1st. I can manage on my own. You don’t have to accompany me,” Su Xue replied, drying her hands and standing up.
“Okay. Just remember to meet me tonight. I’ll provide you with your tuition and living expenses in advance. Feel free to spend time with your cla.s.smates. If you come across clothes or shoes you like, don’t hesitate to buy them,” Su Wen, the eldest sister, instructed proudly. She wanted her sisters to enjoy life and not worry about expenses.
In other families, children were often playful, their grades were bad, and they lacked dedication to their studies. But in their family, her sisters were incredibly hardworking, thrifty, and diligent in their studies.
“Big sister, I have plenty of clothes, really, too many. You’ve bought me so much—clothes, shoes, hairpins, and more. I’ve never seen such exquisite items before…” Su Xue protested, feeling overwhelmed by the generosity of her sisters. When Big Sister returned from the provincial capital, she bought her a lot of things. The second sister had handmade several outfits for her too.
Lately, Second Sister stopped making bags to focus solely on crafting clothes for them, especially for her and Fifth Sister. She was afraid they might look shabby at school, so she devoted herself entirely to ensuring they wouldn’t be looked down upon.
Su Xue was deeply moved by her sister’s love, but she also felt a sense of shame and guilt. She couldn’t fathom the extravagance and wastefulness of it all. It was painful to think about the money spent on her.
“I haven’t bought enough!” Su Wen declared with determination. “Girls should pamper themselves. A woman’s confidence stems from her appearance. You must understand that. Clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories can never be too much.”
Su Xue was left speechless, and Su Qing, busy crafting new clothes for the Fifth sister, shared her disbelief. It seemed their big sister had become overly enthusiastic about shopping.
Eventually, Su Xue succ.u.mbed to Su Wen’s strong-willed insistence. “I’ll follow your advice, big sister,” she acquiesced. “I’ll work hard in the future to earn money. First, I want you to buy whatever you desire and wear new clothes every day.”
“You are right,” Su Wen nodded approvingly. Her gaze fell on Su Xue’s patched old clothes with disdain. “Fourth sister, what are you wearing? Why are there still old clothes at home?”
She remembered she had given them all away!
Caught off guard, Su Xue stammered, “Um… it’s nothing.”
She had hidden her old clothes away, fearing her sister might give them to heighbours for making cloth shoes..
