Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Seeing the little guy puffing up like an angry pufferfish, Xiao Heng’s lips curved into a smile, “By the way, JiaoJiao, could you check Jing Kong’s teeth for him?"
“What’s wrong? Is it a toothache?” Gu Jiao asked.
Little Jing Kong hurriedly covered his small mouth with his hands and mumbled, “It doesn’t hurt!”
Xiao Heng immediately countered, “What do you mean it doesn’t hurt? Didn’t you just say a couple of days ago that your teeth hurt?”
“I-I-I… I never said that!” Little Jing Kong stammered, hiding his hands behind his back and gazing up at the sky in an exaggerated display of innocence.
The truth was, two days ago, Little Jing Kong had indeed claimed to have a toothache, but it was merely an excuse to avoid doing the extra homework his "bad brother-in-law" had a.s.signed.
Gu Jiao thought about it and realized that, at five and a half years old, Little Jing Kong was around the age to start losing his baby teeth. It was a good time to examine his oral health.
“Let me take a look.” Gu Jiao said.
Little Jing Kong cast a resentful glance at his "bad brother-in-law."
He could refuse anyone else in the world, but when it came to JiaoJiao, he simply couldn’t say no.
Little Jing Kong reluctantly opened his small mouth wide, uttering a drawn-out, “Ahhh—.”
Gu Jiao gently adjusted his tiny body so that he was facing the light streaming in from the window. Then, she took a cotton swab from her little medicine chest and carefully inspected each of his baby teeth one by one.
“One of your front teeth is loose.” Gu Jiao said. “For the time being, make sure to brush your teeth well, don’t eat any candy, and don’t use your tongue to push against it.”
Little Jing Kong looked as if he had been struck by lightning on a clear day!
Brus.h.i.+ng his teeth properly was fine, and refraining from pus.h.i.+ng the tooth with his tongue was bearable, but being forbidden to eat candy? That was just too cruel!
Xiao Heng walked over, deliberately putting on a serious expression as he patted Little Jing Kong’s small shoulder, “It must’ve gotten loose when you bit that guy the other day. Consider it proof of your bravery in upholding justice. You should be proud of yourself—why the long face?”
It’s all your fault!
His bad brother-in-law did it on purpose!
Now he couldn’t have candy anymore!
Xiao Heng sighed dramatically to Gu Jiao, “And to think, I had just promised him some candy moments ago.”
Gu Jiao sternly replied, “Don’t give him any.”
Xiao Heng glanced at Little Jing Kong, raising an eyebrow as he responded with a casual, “Oh.”
Little Jing Kong howled internally in frustration.
Ahhh!
This bad brother-in-law is so infuriating!
The kitchen prepared plain porridge and vegetable egg noodles, partly to accommodate Shangguan Yan’s injury and partly because Little Jing Kong couldn’t eat meat either.
The meal was served in Shangguan Yan’s room.
Even though Little Jing Kong had visited the Qilin Hall before, he always seemed to miss Shangguan Yan—either she was asleep, or he was.
Now, they were finally meeting formally.
Xiao Heng, who already had a princess as his mother, thought Little Jing Kong might question why he now had a Crown Princess as a mother too. To his surprise, Little Jing Kong accepted the situation seamlessly and without any hesitation.
With his hands clasped behind his back, Little Jing Kong strutted out in the leisurely style of Uncle Zhao from Bishui Alley, even mimicking the way he spoke, “I get it, I understand it all! You’ve got a new ident.i.ty! Looks like you’ve got everything set up real nicely!”
Xiao Heng: “...”
Well, if that’s how you see it, so be it.
Meanwhile, Gu Jiao explained Little Jing Kong’s background to Shangguan Yan. He was an orphaned little monk adopted from a temple in a rural area of the State of Zhao. He had no parents, only an elderly master with a white beard, a frail body, and limited mobility.
Gu Jiao helped Shangguan Yan put on her protective gear and a.s.sisted her to the table to sit down.
On the other side, Xiao Heng led Little Jing Kong into the room, holding his hand.
He wasn’t a bald little monk at all.
Instead, he was a chubby, adorable child with his hair tied up in a little bun. His round face was soft and plump, with delicate yet spirited features. His large, bright eyes were framed by thick, long eyelashes.
With a gentlemanly demeanor, Little Jing Kong approached Shangguan Yan, bowed politely, and said, “Greetings, Your Highness the Crown Princess. My name is Little Jing Kong.”
Shangguan Yan didn’t speak, only stared fixedly at Little Jing Kong.
She extended her hand and gently touched his cheek.
Gu Jiao: What’s going on?
Xiao Heng: No idea.
The couple exchanged a glance, silently communicating before turning their attention back to observe Shangguan Yan’s reaction.
Little Jing Kong was also puzzled. Why was this pretty auntie touching his face out of nowhere?
Shangguan Yan opened her mouth and softly asked, “What’s your name?”
“Jing Kong.” Little Jing Kong repeated.
“How old are you?” Shangguan Yan asked again.
Little Jing Kong puffed up his chest and said, “Eight years old!”
Xiao Heng’s mouth twitched. You added another three years again?
Do you even realize you look only four years old? n.o.body’s going to believe that nonsense!
“Jing Kong.” Gu Jiao called out, giving him a look.
Little Jing Kong spread his hands, “Fine, five and a half.”
Xiao Heng: Does that half-year really need to be included?
“You…” Shangguan Yan hesitated for a moment, then smiled and said, “You’re really adorable.”
Little Jing Kong beamed and replied, “And you’re very beautiful!”
After a round of mutual compliments, the family began their meal.
Little Jing Kong was too small to sit at the regular chairs of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, so Xiao Heng specifically had a high chair brought over.
Little Jing Kong sat across from Shangguan Yan, while Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng sat opposite each other.
During the meal, Shangguan Yan occasionally glanced at Little Jing Kong, seemingly very fond of watching him.
Little Jing Kong noticed Shangguan Yan’s friendliness and was happy to bond with her.
He even generously shared his vegetarian dumplings with her.
After dinner, he pulled Gu Jiao outside to catch fireflies in the courtyard.
Xiao Heng and Shangguan Yan stayed in the room, watching the duo play through the window.
Xiao Heng voiced his curiosity, “You seem very interested in Jing Kong.”
Seated on the official’s hat chair, Shangguan Yan fixed her gaze on Little Jing Kong, who was laughing so hard he was doubling over. She replied, “Not really. He just reminds me of someone.”
Xiao Heng paused and asked, “Who?”
Shangguan Yan replied, “Your maternal uncle.”
Xiao Heng said, “I have quite a few maternal uncles.”
After all, Xuanyuan Li had six sons in total.
Shangguan Yan clarified, “Your youngest maternal uncle. Your grandaunt had him at an advanced age, and her health was already in poor condition by then. As a result, your youngest maternal uncle was much smaller than other children when he was born. He didn’t start walking until he was two years old, nor did he speak until he was three. His health was frail from a young age, and he’s the only member of the Xuanyuan Family who never practiced martial arts.”
He was also the most unknown to the world.
The men of the Xuanyuan Family were all renowned for their extraordinary martial prowess and decorated achievements. Yet, Little Six was always frail and could only stand weakly behind the door, unable to contribute in any way. He couldn’t even bask in the sun without falling ill afterward.
Little Six often laughed at himself, saying he didn’t seem like a child of the Xuanyuan Family.
He was the only one in the entire Xuanyuan Family who amounted to nothing. He had never done anything to bring honor to the family, and he often felt deeply ashamed of carrying the bloodline of such a prestigious house.
Xiao Heng commented, “Jing Kong is as st.u.r.dy as a little bull.”
He ate well, slept well, caused mischief, and rarely fell ill. Even when he did get sick, he recovered much faster than most people.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
