“Grandma is seriously ill?” Xia Chen ignored Xia Ru’s unfriendly att.i.tude and asked directly.
Xia Ru seemed initially puzzled but soon responded, “Yes! Grandma is seriously ill! Why don’t you go and see her?”
Xia Wan, sensing something was amiss, inquired, “Is Grandma at your house or in the hospital?”
Xia Ru glanced at Xia Wan from the corner of her eyes and said, “At the hospital, of course! How could a seriously ill person be at home?”
“What if…” Xia Ru’s voice trailed off as she suddenly fell silent.
Xia Wan couldn’t help but smirk, knowing what Xia Ru had left unsaid. If this person had really pa.s.sed away at home, it would be a terrible omen.
However, given Xia Ru’s att.i.tude, was Li Jin genuinely unwell?
Xia Chen glanced at Xia Wan and said, “Let’s go take a look?”
Xia Wan shared the same intention.
Whether Li Jin was genuinely sick or pretending, they would soon find out when they visited.
The three of them followed the address Xia Ru had provided and found a humble three-story towns.h.i.+p hospital.
Xia Ru cast a critical eye on the rundown hospital building and the weed-covered gravel path, muttering, “It’s fitting for Xia Ru to choose such a place.”
Xia Chen suggested, “Let’s go in and check first.”
As they approached the hospital’s entrance, a disheveled middle-aged man in khaki attire blocked their path. “Where are you headed?”
Xia Wan was taken aback and surprised that there was someone guarding this rundown place.
“We’re here to visit a patient,” Xia Chen calmly informed the man.
“Visiting a patient again, are you?” The man’s face was etched with displeasure as he fumbled with his clothing and reached out towards Xia Chen. “Any police officers among you?”
Xia Chen was bewildered. “Police officers?”
“If there are no police officers, why are you staring at people? Move along!” The man waved them off impatiently.
Puzzled, Xia Wan asked, “What kind of place is this?”
“Are you here to cause trouble?” The man was even more irritated. “I don’t know where you came from!”
“Let me tell you, this is the town’s mental hospital!”
“Every day, all sorts of odd characters come here! ”
Xia Chen and the others were taken aback by the man’s words.
Why had Li Jin been admitted to a mental hospital?
Or was Xia Ru deceiving them?
While they were pondering, Xia Hai and Yan Han emerged from the hospital.
“Dad, Mom!” Xia Chen immediately called out to them.
Xia Hails face was originally marked with worry, but upon seeing the expressions of Xia Chen and the others, his concern deepened.
As the guard observed Xia Hai and his wife exit, he huffed, “I told you not to enter, but you didn’t listen!”
“What’s so great about going in there?” The guard spewed contemptuously.
“Can anything good come out of there?”
“Okay, okay! Let’s go! Don’t come back here!” The guard hollered at them, then suddenly choked and fell backvvard.
Xia Hai instinctively reached out to catch him, but he fell to the ground. Yan Han and the others rushed to help Xia Hai up, only to see the guard lying on the ground, foaming at the mouth and convulsing.
Panicking, Xia Hai immediately called into the hospital. Soon, a doctor in a white coat rushed out.
After a.s.sessing the guard’s condition, the doctor hurried back inside. He returned with a syringe a few moments later, followed by several attendants. “What should we do? Old Zhao is unwell again!”
“What other choice do we have? Give him another shot! If he lives, he lives; if he dies, he dies!”
“The last injection kept him bedridden for days!”
“Do you have any better ideas?”
The attendants crowded around the guard, talking in rapid succession, yet none made a move to help him.
As the doctor prepared to inject the guard, Xia Wan suddenly called out, ‘Wait!”
The doctor was startled, and the needle made a small cut on the guard’s arm as he paused.
“Young lady, what are you shouting for?” The doctor stared fiercely at Xia Wan.
The doctor, however, didn’t dare move after hearing Xia Wan’s words.
But shortly thereafter, he responded, “What do you know, young lady? Old
Zhao is incurable! We can only administer a sedative.”
As the doctor spoke, he directed the needle towards Old Zhao’s vein once again.
Before Xia Wan could voice her objection, Xia Feng unexpectedly grabbed the doctor’s wrist. “Can’t you see that this injection could kill him?”
Xia Wan hadn’t antic.i.p.ated Xia Feng intervening at this critical moment, but she trusted him..
