Gates motioned for Sloane to sit on the tiny bench in the middle of the structure. He sat beside her and she waited for him to say something.

"We've been through a lot. And I know that I didn't make things easy on you." He looked at her with such sincerity and love in his eyes that made her instantly forget how chilly it was.

"Gates, we're both responsible for the issues we had." She hated the thought of him thinking it was his fault for their problems. She knew keeping Brayden from him could have been a huge deal-breaker, but he'd forgiven her and their relations.h.i.+p had come full circle.

"You're so amazing and I'm glad to have you in my life again. I can't imagine what life would be like without you and Brayden. Things are different for me now and I need you to know how dedicated I am."

"I don't doubt you're going to be here for me and Brayden." She squeezed his hand as they sat facing one another. "I mean, wow, look at all of this, and even all of the gifts and things you've done for us so far. Gates, you don't have to give me anything for me to know how dedicated you are." He listened to her and smiled when she caressed his face, rea.s.suring him of her love and devotion.

"For a long time after you left, I threw myself into work because it was something I didn't have to think about. It was all I needed. At least I thought it was, but now, it's not enough. It's not the same for me anymore. It doesn't give me the same feeling as being with you and Brayden and I don't want to ever go back to that, because it was a lonely existence. I love you, Sloane, and I don't want to lose you again."

Slowly he reached into his pocket and brought out a small black velvet box. Moving from his place beside her on the bench, he sank to one knee, taking her left hand in his and gently removed her glove. "I know I asked you this before, but I'm asking you again. Sloane Davis, will you marry me?"

Gasping, Sloane felt tears p.r.i.c.k her eyes before they ran warm down her cheeks. She breathed deeply watching Gates slide the ring on her finger. Looking down at the glistening five-carat ring, she realized it was her ring. It was the ring she left behind when she left him more than a year ago.

"Oh, Gates, you still have it." Her words came out not much louder than a whisper as she looked at the platinum band with the three emerald cut diamonds.

"Of course. This ring belongs on no other woman's finger but yours. I don't want anyone else but you. I never did. So, will you do me the biggest honor of my life and marry me?"

"Yes. Yes, I'll marry you." He stood and pulled her into his embrace. "I love you so much."

"I promise you things will be different this time." Placing his hands on either side of her face, he planted a soft kiss on her lips. Pulling back, he leaned his forehead against hers. "I love you."

The two strolled hand in hand back to the sleigh to enjoy the remainder of the ride and the quick helicopter flight back to the city. Sloane couldn't stop enjoying the fact she and Gates were going to be married and raise Brayden together as a family. All of her wishes were coming true and she was happier than she'd been in a long time. She snuggled closer to him as they rode the elevator to the penthouse. "I'm sure Brayden is asleep by now."

"Who knows what he's up to with Abee?" She giggled at Gates' imitation of Brayden and his inability to say his aunt's name correctly.

"You got a point there."

Before Gates could open the door, Sloane stopped him.

"What? What's wrong?" He stopped to look at her and she could see the concern in his eyes.

"Nothing's wrong. I...I can't remember a time when I was happier than I am right now. Thank you for loving me, and our son."

"It's the easiest and best thing I've ever done." He leaned over and kissed the tip of her nose before he opened the door and let her in. As he switched on the lights, he watched her eyes light up as they heard a roar of voices. "SURPRISE!"

"Oh, my..." Sloane jumped as she looked and saw Avery, Liyah, Chase, Hannah, Evan and his wife and baby, and surprisingly, Angelica all smiling back at her. Gates had mentioned how he had finally calmed down and how Angelica had apologized. She only wanted the best for him and since that seemed to be Sloane, she, wouldn't continue to give him a hard time about it.

Liyah rushed over to hug her. "I'm so happy for you."

"I can't believe this." Sloane laughed, turning to Gates. "You're just full of surprises."

"This is one of the most important days of our lives. What better way to celebrate, but with family and friends." He reached down to pick up Brayden who had escaped Avery's arms and scampered across the room to his daddy.

She kissed him and then kissed Brayden on his forehead. "This is the absolute best Christmas I've ever had."

Epilogue.

A few weeks after Christmas, Sloane felt ready for another vacation. Finis.h.i.+ng the hospital project and planning a wedding had her so stressed out that she could hardly tell if she was coming or going. Evidently, Gates sensed her high anxiety level and arranged for Avery to take care of Brayden for a week, while he whisked her off to Charleston.

Checking her reflection in the mirror, Sloane smoothed the white silk gown over her hips. She took her hair down and it now fell in loose curls across her shoulders. Exiting the bathroom, she walked to the bed where Gates sat. A long white tube lay on her side of the bed with a red ribbon around it.

"What's this?" She picked up the tube, pulling back the covers before sliding in beside him.

"Maybe you should open it and find out."

"Gates, what've you done?" She could tell he was up to something, noticing the mischievous grin plastered across his gloriously handsome face. She'd never seen him smile as much as he had in the past couple of weeks and it was wonderful to see. He was back to the man she'd fallen in love with and her heart felt full every time she looked at him.

"It's a wedding gift."

"But the wedding is weeks away."

"I know, but I can't wait until then to give it to you."

"You're ruining me, you know that, right?" She laughed, pulling the white cap from one end of the tube and reaching to pull out what at first looked like a poster. "Don't tell me, you got me an autographed poster of Jason Momoa?" She giggled, fan-girling over the Conan the Barbarian film star.

"You're so funny." Gates rolled his eyes at her sarcastic remark as she continued to laugh. "Just open it."

"This is a...blueprint." With Gates' help she slowly lay the tube aside and spread out the paper. Real estate was his life, but a blueprint? What kind of present could that possibly be? "What is this...a house?"

"Yes."

"Gates, you're building a house?" She turned to look at him, confusion plastered across her face. It still wasn't clicking with her why he'd give her a blueprint of a house for a wedding...oh no!

"We are building a house," he motioned back and forth between them.

"When? I mean, why? I-" The man may be a real estate shark, but he was the most generous and wonderful man she'd ever met. It was the best wedding present that she'd ever imagined.

"Why not?"

"But, we have a house. Aren't we living in the penthouse in New York?"

"We'll keep it, so we have a place to stay when we visit."

"Visit? What are you talking about? We aren't building the house in New York?" She was truly confused by now and sat anxiously, awaiting his answer.

He shook his head and the lips she was about to kiss curved upwards. "I thought we would build it in North Carolina. That way, we're closer to Avery and your friends. Plus, it's a great place for us to raise Brayden."

"You mean it?" She was overjoyed with the thought of living in North Carolina. She'd always liked New York before when she lived there with Gates, but that was before Brayden had come along and once she'd moved to Wilmington, she'd fallen in love with it. The slower pace and family friendly location was incomparable. "We're moving to North Carolina? But what about the company? You can't leave it, can you?"

"I'm not leaving it. I'll just do more from outside the office." He took her hand in his and the warmth of his skin against hers comforted her. "It's time I delegate some things. I'll still go there for major stuff, but I'll work from our new home. Whatever I have to do to be with you and Brayden."

"Oh Gates, I love you." She stretched her arms around his neck and kissed him hard. This was such a huge deal. He was willing to leave everything he knew behind to have a life with her and their son. It was more than she could have ever dreamed of having and she silently hoped no one pinched her and woke her up.

"So, you're okay with it?"

"Of course; I am if you are. But I know it's a lot for you to give up."

"It's more for me to gain." She smiled at his comment and thought how lucky she was to have someone who cared so much about her and Brayden. She knew Gates would do anything for them and it made her happy to think she was going to spend the rest of her life with him.

"Wow, we've got so much to do."

"Besides the wedding, what's next on the agenda?" He leaned over to kiss her temple, laying his head on her shoulder as he wrapped his arms around her pulling her closer to him.

"Hmm, well the first thing..." She tapped her chin before pointing to the blue print still lying on the bed between them. "I think we need to make a change here."

"Changes already?" She knew he wasn't truly paying attention to her because she could feel his lips starting to kiss a light trail from her ear down her neck and she giggled.

"Well, I know they make baby monitors, but I'm not sure you want our little girl so far away from us." Sloane bit her lower lip and waited. Gates stopped kissing her neck and pulled back to stare at the drawing for a second trying to make sense of what she said. She watched the color drain from his face and he looked at her in pure shock.

"What?"

"Surprise?" She offered up a wry look, not knowing what he was going to say or do, and she could feel little flutters in her stomach as she waited for a response.

"Are you sure?" She didn't know whether it was shock or absolute fear she saw in his eyes as he continued to stare at her.

"That it's a girl, no. But being pregnant, yes."

"You're kidding." Gates' voice was barely audible as he looked down at her stomach as if he could see the baby actually growing inside of her.

"Nope. Not kidding at all. Brayden is going to be a big brother and you're going to be a daddy...again."

"I can't believe this."

She'd been a little apprehensive about telling him. After all, she'd kept their first child from him and it was very soon to be having another baby. "Are you okay with it?"

"Okay, are you kidding me? I couldn't be happier. You really are pregnant?" She sighed in relief when he gently placed his hand on her stomach. She could see the happiness in his eyes when he looked at her and she felt tears forming in her own as she nodded.

"Yes, it's only a few weeks, but I am. I guess new traditions pay off." She giggled thinking back to their 'new tradition' with the mistletoe that had to be the culprit for her pregnancy.

"Sounds to me like it was the best new tradition we could've ever started. I love you." She relaxed in his arms when he kissed the top of her head and pulled her closer.

"I love you too."

Chapter One.

Summer 2006 Damien Chan pulled his sungla.s.ses down to the tip of his nose to give his eyes a clear view of the beauty that had just crossed in front of him on the other side of the pool. He hadn't expected-well it was Miami and seeing beauties pool side was the norm of each day, but this one... there was something special about this one. He could tell by the way she walked in her six inch strapped sandals that exposed perfectly pedicured toes and st.u.r.dy ankles. There had to be a secret to balancing in those neck breaking heels and look so mouthwatering doing so. He never understood why women tortured themselves trying to look taller, but he gained a whole new appreciation for the neck breakers. His eyes travelled up from the silver charm anklet that sat seductively around her ankle, to her caramel stiff shaped calf that spoke of how fit she was.

Damien loved a woman who kept fit. Nothing jiggled and she had a combination of tight and soft in all the right places.

His eyes journeyed up to her thighs-Damien smiled to himself-toned and jiggle free. Just the way he liked them wrapped around his waist.

Her thighs rounded up into a perfect a.s.s partially exposed by the white swimsuit she had on, but tastefully covered by the see through thigh high robe that rode slapdash on her shoulders. The bottom of her swimsuit had golden circular hoops at both sides of her waist bone, clearly the only things holding the bottom pieces together. Very Victoria Secret like.

Damien s.h.i.+fted uncomfortably on his lounge chair. The bottom half of her had him so hard already he had to raise his knee to hide the evidence.

She turned around, giving him a back view of her body. He wished she would- "Yes!" he whispered with a discreet air punch.

The flimsy robe slide down her arms so fluidly, like a gentle caress and pulled at her waist before she tagged it completely off and tossed it on the lounge chair. Damien had never felt so jealous of a piece of clothing before. What he would give to be that robe!

Her back was exposed, except for the thin straps that tied behind her neck and across her back to hold up the swimsuit. She had what looked like a delicate back, the outlines of her shoulder blades were visible and so was the hollow deep between that led to the round curve of the small of her back to the top of her a.s.s. She had what looked like a tattoo there, but her dark complexion and the distance made it impossible to tell.

"Holy..." Damien breathed when she turned around.

It was official. He'd just spotted the s.e.xiest woman in the world. Someone call the Guinness records guys! Such perfection should not go undoc.u.mented. Every male species needed to see her, for generations to come!

The top part of her suit tapered up to what looked like a three inch piece that sat along her belly up to meet the bikini top part of the suit. Those two girls were also tastefully hidden, with just the right amount of b.o.o.bs slipping out. He could already imagine pressing his face between those babies.

He moved up to her visible collar bones, to her long swan-like neck, up her chin, slightly smiling lush red lips, b.u.t.ton nose and- "s.h.i.+t!"

She'd caught him staring and now she was staring back with a certain glint in her eyes as she lowered herself onto the lounge chair. He held her gaze and for a moment, Damien thought she was challenging him. Did she think he wouldn't hit on her because she'd caught him staring? Or was she challenging him to do so, so that she could shut him down, publicly humiliating him?

Damien clenched his jaw as his temper flared. He hated conceited chicks who thought their obvious beauty made them better than everyone and any guy would be lucky to be seen with them. He'd made that mistake of dating a girl like her once; he was certainly not going to make it again.
