Cenci,crestfallen,wantedhertostay.Hehadn'tyetreturnedtohisoffice, andherdeliverancehadnotrestoredhimtotheman-of-the-worldinthepicture.
Hestillworealookofingrainedanxietyandwa.s.stillmakinghiswaytothe brandyatunusualhours.Thefronthehadraisedforthemediahadevaporated beforetheircarswereoutthroughthegate,andheseemedonthefollowingday incapablylethargic.
