No. All that's left to do is a little cleaning, and, as usual,
my Annie's got everything under control. I'm thinking that
if I can help you to get this story out, it might just be my per-
sonal way of apologizing for my involvement here-sort of
like paying rest.i.tution, I guess."
"You make it sound pretty bad." Maggie wondered what
she was getting into.
"Well, I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Cohn
is certainly able to justify everything and he manages to do
most things within the legal limits of the law-why, he's even
had me believing he was totally legit. But then one morning
you wake up and realize how many innocent people have
been hurt... and well, I'll explain everything when I get there.

Watch for a white Jaguar out in the circle drive in front of
the condos. I don't dare come inside-you don't want to be
seen with me. I'll be there in about twenty minutes.
Maggie called to cancel her three o'clock ma.s.sage, then
headed out to the lobby to wait for June. While she was
waiting, discreetly wearing her dark gla.s.ses and already
a.s.suming her new role in undercover espionage, she over-
heard tidbits of a heated conversation from the front desk.
"Look!" said an older man, probably in his sixties. "My
wife and I drove all the way over here from the bay area, and
now there isn't a drop of water at our house, and according
to maintenance tb~ere won't be. This is unacceptable, and I
demand that you find us a room with running water imme-
diately."
"I'm sorry, sir," said the woman in a strained voice. "As
I told you before, all the rooms are full." Just then Maggie
noticed a white car pull up outside. She hurried Out to see
June waving from behind the wheel of a sleek Jaguar, then
climbed in. Obviously, working for Cohn had paid off finan-
cially for the woman.
"You have no idea how much I appreciate this," said
Maggie as she closed the door and buckled herself into the
cool leather seat.
June nodded and quickly took off. "I'm just glad to get
the chance to help someone else for a change. Only last week
I heard Cohn talking about this new Oregon development,
bragging about how it would be the first one in that state,
and I thought to myself then that this man will never be
stopped. Maybe he won't, but it won't be for lack of trying."
Maggie grimaced. "Cohn is so convincing. I had almost
expected-in fact, I'd even hoped for the sake of our town-
that I'd come here and find everything to be just as he had
described."
"Believe me, you would have."
"That's what I was afraid of."
"Cohn would kill me if he knew what I was doing..."
