The night breeze blew up her hair, and some strands whispered softly across her face.
Under the cloud cover over the moon and the dim yellow light of the courtyard, Xia Rou was silent for a long while before saying, softly, "They are… different than us."
She used the word "us." It reminded He Chengzhe that this girl wasn't a daughter of the Cao Family. She was the same as him, with origins of the civilian cla.s.s. The words she used indicated that her mind was clear.
She had not categorized herself with "them." Translated by The Novelst
The reason this girl had been able to understand more of the world of people like Cao An was because she had been living beside them. She must have seen and heard quite a lot.
A young girl at that age; how had she managed to keep her heart the same?
Or rather, the real question was, would she be able to keep her heart the same?
The Cao Family – what kind of arrangements would they make for her in the future?
When he thought this way, He Chengzhe couldn't help but feel pity for this little sister. However, he didn't have the ability to intervene.
So he sighed.
"Xiao Rou, you need to take care of yourself… and stay the way you are now." As he spoke, there was a hint of admonishment in his words. He tucked the loose hairs behind her ears and brushed softly at her bangs.
Then they heard a man's deep voice: "Xiao Rou!"
The pair turned at the same time.
"Xiao He has come?" Cao Yang smiled. "How come only Xia Rou is here? Where's Cao An?"
He Chengzhe was usually over to see Cao An, but why was he with Xia Rou? Also… Cao Yang felt that Xia Rou and He Chengzhe… Weren't they a little too close?
"Brother Yang," He Chengzhe greeted Cao Yang. "Cao An drank too much and I brought him back home. I just came across Xiao Rou and we were just chatting."
"Are you going to come in and sit for a while?" Cao Yang asked.
"No need. It's so late; you guys should rest," rejected He Chengzhe.
He turned around to look at Xia Rou: "I'm leaving first, then."
Xia Rou replied with a "Mn."
When their eyes met, they seemed as though they wished to speak, but nothing was said. Somehow, they seemed to be exchanging information in silence.
Since it was wordless, Cao Yang was obviously unable to say anything about it.
His forehead wrinkled.
After sending He Chengzhe away, Cao Yang scanned Xia Rou once more, his brows furrowed so heavily that he could have crushed a fly.
"Why did you come out wearing just this?" he scolded her.
Xia Rou was baffled by the sudden lecturing. She was confused: "What's wrong with this?"
When she slept, she wore only panties and a camisole with a bra. After she had received the call from He Chenzhe, she had put on some shorts to put on before she went out.
The shorts she was wearing was the latest arrival in the market. The length was much shorter than average, barely covering her crotch.
She felt that wearing this in the summer was cooling and had no idea that her snowy white legs appeared straight and firm, looking especially seductive in the dark night.
Cao Yang didn't want to point this out.
But inside his heart he was very unhappy. He felt that Xia Rou was wearing too little and revealing too much. And most of all, she had been alone with a young man on this kind of dark night.
She still didn't understand that all men were wolves.
And He Chengzhe was young and handsome, his temperament superior and very fas.h.i.+onable – he could easily attract the admiration of girls.
He remembered the gentle look in Xia Rou's eyes as she gazed at He Chengzhe; something itched at the inside of his heart.
"You're wearing too little. Be careful or you might get sick," he said, grabbing her shoulders to maneuver her inside. He patted her back and let her go in first.
"How's that possible? Even the news today said today the temperature hit a record high in thirty years," she mumbled as she went through the door.
"What were you two talking about just now?" Cao Yang asked.
"Nothing, we were just chatting…" Xia Rou said, head down.
Thinking about the matters between Cao An and He Chengzhe, her mood was still down.
Did that… mean that she had her own little secrets already?
Cao Yang felt uncomfortable inside. Translated by The Novelst
He had taken care of her for three years and she had always been free in sharing with him everything she knew. But all of a sudden, why did she have her own little secrets with another man?
But Cao Yang knew that it was impossible to lose his temper with Xia Rou due to small things like that. She was a girl and had grown up; of course she would have secrets now.
She would probably only share these things with her best friend.
So he took a deep breath and tried to suppress the uncomfortable feeling in his heart.
But he wasn't able to resist stretching out his hand to brush the hair that had been tucked behind her ears by He Chengzhe.
Seeing her delicate collarbone and snow-white shoulder, she seemed so frail a man could be fond of the look.
This little girl would be going to university soon… living inside the dorms…
She already had boys chasing after her in high school. When she entered university, there would be no parents or teachers to control them any longer, so the boys would run wild like unbridled horses.
At that time, who knew how many bees or b.u.t.terflies she would attract.
But this little girl… did she even know anything yet?
Cao Yang couldn't help but recall the look in her eyes as she stared at He Chengzhe, as gentle as water.
As though she had feelings for him.
