"You like Xiao He?" asked Cao Yang abruptly.
"Meh?" Xia Rou's face was filled with confusion.
Cao Yang lit up and tucked his lighter away. "I see that the two of you are very close?"
"Brother Chengzhe used to always bring me around to play. We usually go together with Fourth brother. We stopped when I became a senior since I was so busy," Xia Rou explained.
Was that so? He Chengzhe had gone along as well? He had always thought it was only Fourth brother that had brought her along to play.
He released the smoke in his mouth. "He's about ten years older than you, right?"
"Nine years, don't just guess blindly," Xia Rou said, helpless. "I'm close to him because he's Fourth brother's best friend."
"He's too old," Cao Yang said. "He's already been in the adult world for so many years already. He could be addicted to the pleasures of song and women; his thoughts might be complex, and he doesn't suit you."
He patted her head. "Wait until school starts and find a boy you like there, and start dating then."
"You're still young," he added. "Don't mix with society people."
"I said you're just imagining things…" Xia Rou tried to argue.
But obviously Cao Yang wouldn't believe her. Translated by The Novelst
Xia Rou felt very powerless. She couldn't help but mumble, "I'm still young, I don't want to be in a relations.h.i.+p yet."
Tsk. Who was it again that thought she could start to fly out of his palm since she was eighteen? And now, she felt she was young again?
Cao Yang thought this as he heard Xia Rou continue, "As for you, you're not young anymore! When are you going to bring my sister-in-law back home?"
Cao Yang pulled at her hair. "Tell me clearly. What sister-in-law?"
"Let go, let go!" Xia Rou tried to tug back her hair, saying naturally, "w.a.n.g Man, of course. Aren't you dating now?"
"Don't say nonsense. There's nothing between us," Cao Yang said, denying her words as he bit his cigarette.
Xia Rou smiled. "I know it all already. I heard the conversation between Uncle and Second brother."
Cao Yang gritted his teeth. "It's over."
Xia Rou was shocked.
"What's over?" She chased after him to ask.
"w.a.n.g Man and I don't suit each other. I don't plan on continuing," said Cao Yang indifferently.
Sweat started to bead on her forehead. "Big brother, don't jump to conclusions! Look how well-matched you are with Sister w.a.n.g Man! If you don't date her, who else are you going to date? Did you fight? You should be more generous to her…"
Cao Yang glanced at her. "What do you mean if I don't date her who else would I date? It's not like she's the only woman in the world. Why are you so nervous? There's nothing between us anyway. We've only had dinner together a few times."
Xia Rou bristled.
"B-B-B-But! But it's Sister w.a.n.g Man! In the capital, there's no one else at her level!" Xia Rou's voice grew louder in volume. When she realized she had lost control of herself, she quickly lowered her voice.
"Big brother, I'm telling you, it's very normal for couples to have a fight or two. Don't just break up when you get angry. Let the situation mellow for two days and when you're not mad anymore, you can talk to Sister w.a.n.g Man. no matter what, you should take it easy. The problem will be solved sooner or later…" Cao Yang looked at Xia Rou, his brows beginning to furrow.
"Do you like w.a.n.g Man that much?" he asked.
Xia Rou's concern for and praise towards w.a.n.g Man had already exceeded the scope of that word, "like." Also, Cao Yang knew very clearly that w.a.n.g Man wasn't very close to Xia Rou. Except for the few times they ran into each other at banquets, they had no other contact.
Xia Rou said immediately, "Yes, I like her very much. I think she's great in all aspects. It's true; I took a look around and there's no one who can compare!"
Cao Yang took a long pull off his cigarette and blew out slowly.
"Xiao Rou," he said. "w.a.n.g Man comes from a very good family, so her personality is quite arrogant. There are many who want to get closer to her, but she doesn't give anyone face; she has the qualifications to be arrogant."
"That's why…" he patted her head again. "If you like her, just watch from afar. Don't try to get close to her. She's not an easygoing person."
Xia Rou, looking up at him, was dazed for a bit. She asked, "w.a.n.g Man, she… doesn't really see me, right?"
Cao Yang did not answer.
But Cao Yang knew that w.a.n.g Man truly did not look at Xia Rou.
The first few times they met, w.a.n.g Man could still be considered to be friendly towards Xia Rou. But the last time he brought her up, w.a.n.g Man's att.i.tude made it clear to him that she didn't really see Xia Rou well.
The reason for this huge change in att.i.tude was probably because w.a.n.g Man had learned that Xia Rou wasn't his biological sister.
She was very sharp, but she hadn't managed to maintain her att.i.tude properly. Most of all, he had openly conveyed his own att.i.tude towards Xia Rou to outsiders by that point, but w.a.n.g Man still hadn't bothered with it and continued to express that kind of att.i.tude.
It was then that Cao Yang had begun to feel disinterest.
He felt that the relations.h.i.+p of testing the waters between him and w.a.n.g Man could come to an end, since he probably couldn't develop feelings for her any longer. Translated by The Novelst
As the eldest son, Cao Yang bore the responsibility of protecting and taking care of his little brothers as they grew up since their mother was gone. So this strong sense of responsibility had shaped him into someone who was used to s.h.i.+elding the shortcomings of his family members.
And the thing he was unable to bear the most was seeing someone under his wing be bullied or looked down upon.
