Huo Chen knew old Mrs Huo well enough to know that she would not go easy on Lu Zhaoyang.

The next day, Lu Zhaoyang woke up early and prepared breakfast.

None of the servants paid her any attention. They boldly ignored her and did not offer to help.

Instead of having Huo Chen take all the risk, she should be more proactive and do her part. The military was not easily accessible by the public, so the only way she could find her way to Chen was to first gather information from the people around her.

From her short phone call with Huo Chen last night, she had realized that he was watched closely and his movements were restricted.

Since the current chief was the late old Mr Huo’s former subordinate, the military was inclined to accept the Huo family’s requests.

If the old Mrs Huo or Huo Zhenning say the word, she may be able to request to see Huo Chen.

Lu Zhaoyang prepared an exquisite breakfast meal. When old Mrs Huo arrived in the dining room for breakfast, she was there ahead of the servants to serve her.

“Madam, I made breakfast.” She had made enough for everyone.

Old Mrs Huo looked at the bowl of s.h.i.+take mushroom and chicken meat congee. Without warning, she picked up the bowl and tossed it aside.

The ceramic bowl was in pieces. Hot congee was scattered all over the floor.

“I hate s.h.i.+take.” Old Mrs Huo threw a flat glance at her. “What are you standing there for? Clean up this mess!”

Lu Zhaoyang stood there in surprise for a moment. Of all the times she had spent in the Huo family, no one had treated her like this before.

She was rejected before she had a chance to make her request.

“Right away.” Lu Zhaoyang nodded professionally the way she would at work and left to get the tools.

When she returned, everything else including the fried eggs and buns were all over the floor.

She could sympathize with the old lady’s feelings and kept her emotions in check. If old Mrs Huo stayed angry with her, she might never see Huo Chen again.

Huo Zhenning and Xue Yuming arrived in the dining room to see Lu Zhaoyang cleaning the floor.

After a maid served their breakfast, old Mrs Huo dined slowly in complete disregard for Lu Zhaoyang.

Huo Zhenning was furious about the scandal himself and no longer felt obliged to treat his stepdaughter kindly.

The man went to his seat without any comment.

Xue Yuming glared at Lu Zhaoyang with distaste. Who knew what her daughter had done so early in the morning to make the old missus so angry?

Lu Zhaoyang did not expect her mother to speak on her behalf. It was fine as long as she did not reprimand her as well.

She quietly continued with the cleaning. Had old Mrs Huo not asked her to do this personally, she would have made her exit right away to not make the atmosphere in the dining hall so awkward.

However, if she left at that moment, old Mrs Huo would probably be even madder at her.

“Do you actually know how to do ch.o.r.es? You’re so slow. How can a child raised by a single mother not even know to sweep the floor properly?”

Old Mrs Huo threw a quick look at her. The old woman’s wrinkled face twisted with loathing.

The reproach was also directed at Xue Yuming.

Lu Zhaoyang fisted her hands tightly to stop herself from erupting in anger. She hastened her work without bothering about the noise she was making.
